MADISON, Maine — A fire that destroyed three buildings in downtown Madison on Tuesday night remains under investigation, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a statement Wednesday.

According to investigators, the fire started in the basement of one of the Main Street buildings and spread to the others, McCausland said. The fire was reported at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The buildings were unoccupied and being renovated due to a fire a few years ago.

“Investigators plan to sift through the rubble as soon as the temperature warms up to melt some of the ice that formed from the firefighting efforts,” McCausland said.
