FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Officials from the State Fire Marshal’s Office said Wednesday that a 38-year-old man is dead after his carelessly disposed cigarette likely led to an early morning fire at his apartment house.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, said in a statement that the body of Norman LaPointe was found in his third-floor studio apartment at 13 Presque Isle St.

The fire broke out just after midnight. Three occupants of the two other apartments escaped the fire after being awakened by smoke detectors.

Fire investigators said careless disposal of smoking materials in a waste basket in LaPointe’s apartment is the likely cause of the fire.

It was the state’s fifth fire death of the year.

  1. Very sad, glad the others got out safe and sound. Scary that he was so careless with disposal of cigarette material. Even scarier that he was in an apartment building with others lives at stake. RIP….please accept my condolences on the loss of this  young man

  2. just say no….  smoking cigarettes is a gateway drug to harder drugs and booze and may result in death

    1.   No, I know lots of people that smoke but don’t drink or do drugs.  Smoking is a nasty habit but it doesn’t lead to drugs.   I lived down south for a few years and tried working in a tobacco factory and if people saw what they do with the tobacco and what is put in it they would never smoke!!

      1. nicotine and caffeine are considered legal drugs but still drugs

  3. When I let people smoke inside I empty the ashtray into a metal coffee can. I don’t dump that in the trash until hours later – usually the next day. Note that I specified a metal can – not one of these modern wonders made from a paperboard type of material.

  4. Please remember that Norman has a  family who is grieving.  I understand the frustration over cigarette smoking and the dangers it creates.  We are so grateful that no one else was hurt in what was such a needless accident but the bottom line is Norman lost his life and our family is devastated.

    1. I sorry for your lose Tracy I had worked with Norm at Sears and he was a nice guy. I had moved over to Walmart and would see him in the early morning when he would be delivering donuts. It is such a said tragic accident!!
