SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A man with three prior convictions for failing to register as a sex offender was arrested and charged with the same crime, police said Thursday.
Phillip Gurney, 50, of Portland, who had been living at a Main Street hotel in South Portland, failed to notify that city’s authorities that he was living there, South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark said.
Gurney was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a person under age 14 in 1994. State law requires people who are on the sex offender registry to notify local police within 24 hours of relocating to a new city.
Gurney was arrested just after 6 p.m. Wednesday after exiting a bus on Main Street. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where he remained Thursday in lieu of $5,000 bail.
The failure to register as a sex offender count was elevated to a Class B felony due to Gurney’s prior history.

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. A F.B.I. analyst has been sentenced to seven years in prison for having sex with a young girl in Spotsylvania County.
Forty-four-year-old Anthony John Lesko entered an Alford plea yesterday in Spotsylvania County Circuit Court to nine counts of felony indecent liberties upon a child. An Alford plea means Lesko doesn’t admit guilt but believes there is enough evidence for a conviction.
Authorities say Lesko engaged in a sex act with her nine times, beginning when she was nine years old.
According to the plea, Lesko said he was a victim in the case. He said the girl initiated the contact.
Yeah, that 9-YO girl grabbed a 44 YO Man, dragged him into an alley and beat him till he agreed to preform.
7 years for that? Some poor folks in Texas get that much time for failure to pay child support!

$5000 bail seems a little low for someone with his record.
These sex offenders need to stay in jail, they have no right being out in the public you can’t help them so the only answer is to keep them locked up.
There is no such thing as reasonable bail for sex offenders. Do some research and you will find that pedophilia is rarely or ever curable. These sick people continue to perpetrate throughout their lives. While some can sustain the urge to act, most cannot and repeat their crimes. We need a huge island with no way out for these miscreants, drop them in by helicopter and let them fend for themselves. If they have to resort to cannibalism so be it.
You seem to use the term “sex offender” and “pedophile” interchangeably. This is understandable because the State classifies sex offenders in this manner.
There IS a big difference between some registered “sex offenders” and pedophiles. You are absolutely correct in your assertion that there is no current “cure” for pedophilia. Some sex offenders can be “cured” (more often the term used is “socialized”)
Part of the problem with child sexual abuse could be better addressed in the State of Maine refined their classification system for sexual offenders.
Yes you are correct, forgive my misuse of the word. I do believe though in this particular case he was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a person under age 14 and I believe that makes him a pedophile and a sex offender. I do feel that an individual of 18 that engages in consensual sex with a 17 yr old whose parents brought charges should be classified in a different manner as well as other cases that do fall in the “sex offender” category. I certainly do not want anyone’s life ruined by a label if it is not deserving. However I feel strongly that pedophiles should not be protected and a mere label is not enough of a deterrent.
The age of consent in Maine is 16. Unless the minor files rape charges it is perfectly legal for a 20 year old or a 50 year old to have consensual sex with them. If you’re a school teacher or a Dr. or some other professional, then it’s a different story. If you doubt me call your district attorneys office and ask.
