FARMINGTON, Maine — A Norridgewock man accused of holding a paper mill manager hostage during a 10-hour standoff has been ordered held on $50,000 bail.
Fifty-year-old Frank Smith III did not enter a plea during his initial court appearance Friday in Farmington District Court. He’s charged with kidnapping and four counts of criminal threatening in the incident Wednesday at Verso Paper’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay.
WMTW-TV says charges together carry a penalty of up to 50 years in prison.
According to police documents, Smith was overheard telling the manager he was angry about losing his job and over the treatment of other workers.
Smith allegedly went to the mill with a gun Wednesday morning. He released the manager at about 3:30 p.m. and surrendered peacefully at about 6:30 p.m.

This guy is lucky he didn’t clipped.
Check your headline. Big mistake. Big. Mistake. Anyone checking this stuff?
Former millworker accused of holding manger hostage appears in court
What is the issue with the headline?
holding manger hostage…….manger is manager now fixed by the crackerjack staff at the bdn.
That’s funny. Clearly, I could not make it as a copy editor, either.
Threaten a mill manager with a gun = $50,000 bail. Threaten your wife = out before dinner gets cold.
You can beat you wife and get nothing as well. It is very sad how little attention is paid to domestic abuse in Maine.
A co worker interviewed during the “situation” said he was having a bad day. Think 3 to 5 years of having bad days in his future.
Take a good, long, hard look at that man’s face and than tell me if that isn’t a face at wits end. That face should be on the wall at the employment or unemployment office because that face is exactly what the economy is/has doing to the hard working, honest man and his family. It can rightly be said that the family is an insitution under siege in our world today, and that is why our very civilization is in crisis.
Instead of studying his photo and then making a speech, you might want to read the story published the day it happened.
“Sources inside the mill said Smith was fired six months ago for spraying a co-worker in the face with a hose.”

But that doesn’t fit with the him as the poor victim story by lulusmom. Those darn inconvenient facts like being responsible for his own demise. Poor him…. not so much.
It’s unfair to the real victims of this recession for her to do that. That’s why I responded to her comment.
Ha The unions held the company at bay. The company closes or moves and the union guys go nuts.
wonder if he should add this on his next resume??
