LIMERICK, Maine — A teenager was killed early Friday morning when the car she was driving crashed on Route 5 in Limerick.

The victim was identified as Libby Lofgren, 18, of Newfield, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Maine State Police troopers said speed and alcohol are likely factors in the crash, which was reported shortly after 1 a.m., McCausland said.

Lofgren, who was traveling alone, died at the accident scene. Her driver’s license had been suspended since Jan. 28 for a number of prior convictions.

Troopers said her 2004 Pontiac left the roadway at a high rate of speed, became airborne and slammed into a tree.

  1. This is very sad, and my condolences to her family.  But how how does one have “a number of prior convictions” at the age of 18?  Maybe suspension isn’t enough?

    1. Suspension is only a word… Keys can still go in the ignition, and operators can still drive…

    2.  listen to a police scanner sometime. 17,18 year olds are always getting stopped with multiple suspensions on their record

  2. looking at the pics on her facebook she had a thing for speed. one pic of her doing “120” down the highway as she said.

    1. I looked at your pics on Facebook.
You like The Cracker Barrell, Captain Kangaroo, Dr Pepper andMitt Romney. Should I be judging you?

    2. Wow…. what an unbelievably stupid thing to do for you to comment on this girls FB page. You, Roy Blenkhorn, are in need of some serious mental help if you think, for even a minute, that it was ok to do what you did. What’s WRONG with you. Never mind….. don’t answer that because I think I know. You are  an insecure and immature dolt and you derive pleasure from kicking people when they are down. Your parents must be SO proud of you Roy.

      1. He has been told he needs some serious help from other topics he has commented on from several people.  I honestly think he does not care though.  Wondering if that picture in his facebook is even his girlfriend or photoshopped

    3. You are one ignorant person to post on her facebook.  I hope facebook shuts you down for that.  Doubt they will because they let ignorant individuals like you away with things

  3. We all make some awful decisions in life. Luckily, most of us get to look back on them after we have matured. Sadly, Libby didn’t get that chance.
She did not hurt anyone else.
She did not deserve to pay with her life.

    1. If she chose to drink and drive than she put herself and OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE at risk of facing injury and/or death.

  4. i kept my daughter in her teen years  well away from the redneck losers crowd who worship speeding and racing and boozing………….shes 26 now and still alive

  5. Very glad no one else was hurt- speed combined with alcohol will kill or injure you sooner or later- not to mention innocent others. That being said, my condolences to the family.

  6. I have no doubt in my mind that Libby made some bad decisions. She paid for them in full. Leave her be.

Your brilliantly crafted nicknames, for a young woman who just passed away, don’t belong here.

She has a family that is devastated.

She did not deserve to die today.

  7. that’s all fine and dandy….but he didn’t need to post what he did on her FB
page for her friends and family to read…especially since he doesn’t even know them, nor is he even friends with the young lady on FB.

“Roy Blenkhorn – how’d that fast driving do ya Libby. your  (sic)  right. sh*t does indeed happen”

    1. Shame on you, Roy Blenkhorn!  Please tell me you DID NOT do that! What is wrong with you?  I’m surprised you let people know your real name.  Are you out of your mind?  Have you no heart?

      1. I think roy blenkhorn is character from the movie Pet Detective. Doesn’t really matter he is a complete failure as a person.

        1. In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic

  8. While I agree that there will be skepticism based on Libby’s actions, as a close friend of hers, I can’t say that I can condone all of you who DID NOT KNOW HER AT ALL judging her. As my mother told me, if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. You people are grown adults and are bitching about a young teenager who lost her life because of a bad decision. So what if she has made a few of them, and yes I realize that drinking & driving is bad, I’m not sticking up for that or the fact that she was driving recklessly, I am just stating DO NOT slander a young woman based on a few short paragraphs and pictures you have seen on ‘Facebook’ There is more to the story than any of you  or even her close friends are going to know. So please, don’t go bashing her and leaving your comments about she deserved it and all of that, it is NOT what I, her other friends or FAMILY need to be reading. Simply talk among your family, if you have children preach to them about not doing it, use her incident as a learning lesson if you will, but DO NOT bash and slander her memory for all of us to see here. It is not right. NO ONE DESERVES to die. EVERYONE deserves a chance to live their life to the fullest extent.

    1.  “EVERYONE deserves a chance to live their life to the fullest extent.”

Yes, including everyone whose lives she endangered multiple times. If you can’t understand why drunken and reckless driving offends everyone, it’s because it endangers everyone. Even those making responsible choices.

  9. Nicole, this was not a grown woman. 18 years old is barely a legal adult. This girl may have made terrible mistakes and didn’t learn from them but you show a complete lack of empathy.  You are “sick of hearing that these people didn’t deserve this?”  You’re insane.

    1.  I’m insane because I realize that taking pictures of your speedometer while you are driving 120 MPH and drunk driving = death? Okay. If that’s insane, I’ll take it.

    2. I believe the argument is “If they’re old enough to serve their country, they’re old enough to drink.”

    3. 18 isn’t too young to kill. And this young woman would have kept going until she took someone out. And if she was still alive, she’d have done it again and again and again. They always do until they get killed or paralyzed.

  10. Ridiculous to me that people find the need to post thier negetive comments and opinions on stories where a beautiful young child has lost her life.  Libby was an amazing girl with a beautiful smile and joyful spirit.  She has paid the ultimate price for a split second choice, her life.  This is not a time to slander her character.  I too have a family member who has been devistated by drinking and driving and paid a huge cost for it.  Let me just clarify that speculations as to what she did and didn’t do are just those, speculations.  Please people. allow this family to mourn her loss and keep your negetive comments to yourself and just be thankful that you aren’t having to say goodbye to one of your loved ones.  If you knew Libby at all, you would have nothing but sadness in your heart.  Cherish the way she lived, not the way she passed.  The world has lost a beautiful young lady and we are saddened by this loss.  Have some respect for her family and friends and keep your comments to yourself.  God Bless you Libby, you will be so missed by all.

    1. The problem is that it wasn’t just a single incident of a bad decision, she had enough previous incidents of illegal driving that her license was suspended, yet she was driving anyway, and she apparently was posting about her speeding on her Facebook.

Terrible for her family, and what is most terrible is that it probably could have been prevented if she had learned from her previous mistakes at any point.

However, it was only by sheer luck that she didn’t seriously harm someone else along the way, and when someone, anyone, no matter how “wonderful” in other respects, puts others in harm’s way, it’s selfish and deserves to be called just that.

      1. I’m not asking you not to have an opionin, I’m not saying that I condone the choices that were made, All I’m saying  is that people don’t need to post their opinions on here if they are hateful and hurtful to those who are mourning her loss.  I think it’s pretty clear to everyone that drinking and driving are unacceptable behavior.  Its clear that speeding is illegal.  No one needs to post that she was deserving of the fate she was handed.  All of us at the age of 18 made mistakes, most of us have chances to change our behavior and make better choices, Libby wasn’t given that chance.  This tragedy will be a learning lesson to other young children and we don’t need to post negetive comments about her for that to happen.  It’s a matter of respect.  Regardless of how Libby passed, or what everyone’s opionins are on the article written, it is still the loss of life of a beautiful young lady and for that, we should all be saddened……..

  11. If nothing else, perhaps this story will strike a chord somewhere- drinking & driving only lead to heartache & wasted lives & the killing of innocent people too. I only wish her family or friends could have seen & perhaps helped her with her obvious problems. In the end, Libby made her own choice to drink & drive, I am glad no one else was hurt or killed.  her family has my sympathy, for possibly this may have been preventable.

  12. How sad. This was an 18 year old who already had a prior driving record. I hope they go after the person who turned their keys over to her. And I hope the insurance company doesn’t pay a dime since that person had no business turning a car over to someone without a license.
