PORT CLYDE – Enid L. Monaghan, 95, died Saturday, March 17, 2012, at her home. Enid was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Cushing, to Ernest and Nellie Wotton Maloney.
She grew up in Port Clyde and graduated from St. George High School in the class of 1934. She attended Shaw’s School of Business, Bangor. She married Howard I. Monaghan, Dec. 5, 1936. Enid starting working part time at Port Clyde Post Office and became postmaster after a couple of years. She worked as postmaster for 53 years until she retired in 1992 at age 75. She was a member of Naomi Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, St. George; grand Ruth of the Grand Chapter of Maine Order of the Eastern Star; past president of the women’s business group, ZONTA; 70-year member of Oceanview Grange; member and treasurer of Port Clyde Baptist Church for many years; and Port Clyde Red Hat and Exercise group. She was also a past president of the postal group National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and a member of National Association of Postmasters of the United States.
She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, who died in 1972; and by a dear friend, the Rev. John Pierce. Enid is survived by her son, Keith E. Monaghan and his wife, Mona, of Port Clyde; granddaughters, Wendy L. Monaghan of West Palm, Fla., and Lisa M. Young and her husband, Donald, of Cushing; special granddaughters, Lola E. Reinhardt and her husband, Bill, of Tenants Harbor and Nola C. Stone of Warren; great-grandson, Alec J. Young of Cushing; several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Hall & Bibber Funeral Home, 78 Main St., Thomaston. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at Port Clyde Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Maxwell officiating. A reception will be held after the service at the church.
