ORONO, Maine — A Bangor woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police said they discovered she had a firearm in the vehicle she was driving.
Rachel Doughty, 35, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, according to Orono police Capt. Josh Ewing. He said a passenger in the car, David Harris, 30, of Bangor, was issued a summons for possession of “a very small amount” of marijuana. A third person in the vehicle, a man, was not charged.
Officer Dan Merrill pulled Doughty over on Park Street for an outdated inspection sticker, and based on the passengers’ actions, he suspected there were drugs in the car, Ewing said.
A state police K-9 unit was called in to investigate, Ewing said, and after the dog indicated there was contraband in the car, it was searched.
“During the search, in the glove box was a loaded 9 millimeter [handgun],” Ewing said. “Because of the concealed weapon, the driver was arrested based on the investigation that she was in control of the vehicle.”
Doughty was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where she remained Tuesday morning. The weapon was seized by police.

Did I or the reporter miss something? Did the police find any drugs? If a person was hunting and had a loaded concealed weapon in the vehicle the game warden would just issue a summons. Sounds like an illegal search to me.

correction, loaded gun within arms reach.. (easy access) the gun and ammo need to be separated.. gun in trunk, ammo in glovebox.. unless you have a concealed weapons permit.
What if you are driving a truck or a hatchback as asked? Like I said before my car is all easily reachable. Same with my truck. If I put a gun in the back seat and ammo in glovebox I can still grab and load quite fast.

Thier was I time when it was your duty to resist an unlawful arrest . Know you will be charged with resisting arrest even if the arrest is unlawful. Times have changed no all for the better.
it’s called a concealed weapons permit! know your facts about gun safety.. you are allowed to have a weapon in your car, but it cannot be within easy access.. (such as in a glovebox (arms reach), also when transporting a weapon in your vehicle without a concealed weapons permit you must have the weapon, and ammunition separated (gun in trunk, ammo in front), if you have a concealed weapons permit you can have the gun on you, loaded, in the gloveox loaded.. etc.. I’m betting this woman had no permit.
Thats weird when I read the 2nd amendment no where did I see where the government can require you to get a permit to carry “shall not be infringed” doesnt sound like you need a permit to me!!! Oh and by the way I know my facts like number 1 its not a concealed “weapons” permit, its a permit to carry concealed FIREARMS, at least thats what it says on my permit!!! Just because I have the permit in no way do I feel that the govt. should be able to make you get one to carry concealed.

So when I get stopped with my sons bebe gun in my truck I better make sure it is not loaded. Charge the driver? Did the driver even know that a loaded gun was in the glove box? Whos gun was it?
Vehicle operator (owners) are RESPONSIBLE for what is in that vehicle! So where is the confusion here?
I believe the law is that when you have a firearm in the car, it has to be unloaded, unless you have a ccw. I could be mistaken
You’re not far off. If you are in ‘care and control’ of the vehicle, then you are responsible for what’s in it; drugs or any anything illegal. This is, I believe (mostly), nationwide.

You need that permit to carry that concealed weapon. These police officers put their lives on the line for all of us. She could of been a unstable person or even the passenger. Why would it be loaded? she could of had kids, some one could of stolen the vehicle and OHHH!! lookky looky a loaded 9mm. So a very good call on the officers behalf
i believe if the gun is unloaded and in plain sight it isnt illegal to carry. if it cant be seen then you need a concealed weapons permit..
Title 12, Section 11212 1B: “A person may not, while in or on a motor vehicle or in or on a trailer
or other type of vehicle being hauled by a motor
vehicle, have a cocked and armed crossbow or a firearm
with a cartridge or shell in the chamber or in an attached magazine,
clip or cylinder or a muzzle-loading firearm charged
with powder, lead and a primed ignition device or mechanism, except that
a person who has a valid Maine permit to carry a
concealed weapon may have in or on a motor vehicle or trailer a loaded
pistol
or revolver covered by that permit.”
I also saw references to a provision where – even if unloaded – the firearm must be stored “away from the control of the occupants of the motor vehicle.”
Remember, the Police don’t write the laws, they just enforce them.
What good is an unloaded gun?
Allowing unlicensed individuals the ability to transport unloaded firearms without a license saves a lot of hassle for those who use firearms for sporting purposes or are simply transporting them as opposed to using them for self defense.
ok thanks for the info. i didnt know about the storing it away from occupants of the vehicle even when its unloaded. but it does make sense. especially if there are ever children in the car.

if there was no felons what was the problem.. i do not see it …people need to be armed to take care of unlawful arrests taking place and people getting robbed what good is an unloaded gun
