AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Democrats are sharply criticizing Gov. Paul LePage for taking a weeklong trip to Jamaica while the legislative session is in its final weeks.
Democrats say the governor leaves Wednesday for his vacation — his second trip to Jamaica during a legislative session. This time, he leaves with just a few weeks left in the session and budgets, major Health and Human Services Department changes, public education, tax and energy issues are still unsettled.
Democrats said in a statement that LePage’s vacations show he’s out of touch with the needs of regular Maine people. Party chairman Ben Grant said the governor’s leaving town as the heat gets turned up.
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said the vacation is an annual trip for the governor’s family and that he’ll be in regular contact and available as needed.
Lawmakers are scheduled to adjourn April 18.

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress from January 2007 to January 2011, is the Democratic Party.
Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for FY 2008 & FY 2009 as well as FY 2010 & FY 2011. (FY=fiscal year) In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases. For FY 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009. Let’s remember what the deficits looked like during that period:
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, including Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is, I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.

First, the president never flies in Air Force Two. Air Force Two is the aircraft the vice president is in.
Second, the plane that typically carries the president is a Boeing 747, not a Boeing 757.

As stated in the above link to the official Air Force website, she is authorized and does fly on the C-32 (757) (Air Force Two when the vice is on board).
If you really have the credentials you say you do, you would know that Air Force One and Air Force Two don’t refer to specific planes. You kept saying the first lady flies via Air Force Two. Unless Vice President Biden flies on the plane with her, it’s not Air Force Two. (The president and vice president would never fly on the same plane for security reasons.)

The thing is, the Secret Service has to protect the president’s family. No matter where the president’s family goes, they go. We pay for that, as we should. And they fly on the same plane. The flight crew gets paid regardless of whether they’re in the air.
So when you factor in the cost of providing security (which we have an obligation to pay), the Obamas (or any presidential family) do pay their own way and don’t have to pay for the travel expenses of the security detail.
It is ridiculous to suggest that a president’s family hide in the White House for the president’s term and not go anywhere, or that they should pay for the security (which includes transportation for the security).

It is undisputed that the First Lady and children have used the C-32 on several occasions to start a vacation prior to the arrival of the President. Why didn’t the First Lady not choose to wait and start her vacation when her husband travelled on the VC-25 and they all travel together and not burn flying time and jet fuel on the C-32? That is the argument. Nothing more.
Yes, she is entitled to secret service protection, and time away. No dispute there. Yes, flight Crew get paid no matter what. Yes, the Obama’s paid for the Rooms and meals and incidentals . No arguments there. In todays trying budget woes, you think sound decisions would be made to save on flying time and jet fuel when the First Family can consolidate travel plans. The C-32 would not have a mission number cut against it for just secret service travel alone. When the President moves on the VC-25, there are many support missions on cargo aircraft that assume the duty of hauling the infrastructure necessary to protect the President and First Family. The cost is staggering in jet fuel alone. The C-32 is not used for support missions.

Bush did spend quite a bit of time at his ranch. As far as the first lady, she has been a focal point for misuse of government funds for vacations, and all expenses have been repudiated, as far as lodging and tickets, etc. But she certainly didn’t travel by commercial means. On her European trip, she left a week prior to The President arriving, causing a lot of attention toward the matter. She did travel on the 757. How would he justify one of the agents getting hurt or killed if there were to be an incident or attack? First of all, it is not Obama who publishes travel warnings, it is the State Department. Although part of the cabinet, the people who publish these are the same ones who published them during past Republican administrations. The head might change, but most of the drones are the same.
Secondly, and more importantly, the travel warnings are not for Mexico, but for parts of Mexico. Due to ignorance on your part, I understand that you believe that Mexico is a postage sized country with one situation all over. In fact, it is a farily large country with lots of variation in climate, crime rates and areas that even Mexican people don’t go to.
Thirdly, do the schools in your area have spring break? Do the rich kids travel during this break? Well, then those kids are on spring break. The term has come to mean drunken carousing, but that is not universal behavior. Obama’s kids go to Friends Sidwell School, a school for rich kids from all political parties. They can take their breaks anywhere they want, not needing your permission. I have friends whose kids went on a church trip to Mexico (somewhere in Yucatan) to work at an orphanage. So open your mind a little to include lots of activities during spring break.

Loads of kids and families here in Texas go to Mexico for vacations year-round. So? It’s not that unusual and there are plenty of areas that are still safe (though you couldn’t pay me to go there right now).

The issue isn’t Lepage that Lepage isn’t taking his vacation in “vacationland” Maine where we need the money. The real issue is that he is skipping out of work early at a time when he really should be in Augusta doing his job. He can take his vacation after Apr 18 like every other Governor.
It’s a sensitive time in the legislative session and communicating with the Governor could make or break the passage of important bills. By leaving, LePage is upping the possibility that the wheels of government will grind to a bureaucratic halt. A good leader would be working with Congress to get things done, not disappearing. It’s very selfish and, yes, a slap in the face to his employer, the People of Maine.

Well, fix the bloody computers. Obviously, total reliance on anything mechanical without a fix, is stupid. Even with the old tap – a – tap finger adding machines, a clerk would check to make sure they’d got the numbers right. And that was in the days when such machines were considered a fantastic revolution.
Computers are only responsible for what information that is injected. That’s what the computer whizzes say.
If the computer is flushing out the wrong numbers, change them. Or get someone aboard – a sister-in-law – or someone, who knows how to run ’em.

Amen . At least he’s not giving us huge Tax Increases , Expanding Welfare Programs, or giving massive subsidies to folks like Angus King for stupid Wind Power projects. He has done more positive things in office in almost 15 months than any of the 40 years those Stupid Democrats have ever done for the business person or the working person here in Maine.
What positives? The only one I can think of is his desire to lower electric power rates, yet hasn’t done much to accomplish it. Lots of Negatives though: He’s not creating jobs, he passed a healthcare bill that’s a joke, that lines the pockets of insurance companies while dramatically upping the rates for the elderly and people in rural parts of the state and while TAXING us all $4 per month on every insurance policy, all on a hope and a dream that young people will buy health insurance (how’s that working out Governor?), he’s broken promises if not contracts made with state workers and retirees, he’s tried to hurt unions, he’s tried to disenfranchise voters, he increased the Baldacci budget by $200 million dollars, he unnecessarily cut estate taxes and income taxes for millionaires while at the same time made drastic cuts to the poor and the elderly, he’s tried to put MPBN out of business, he’s sold out to ALEC and the Maine Heritage foundation, he’s disrespected the office he holds and embarrassed the State with his foolish tongue. In sum he’s shown he’s incompetent and abuses his power. Most Mainers just hope his term ends soon before he does anymore damage.

Do not expect him to act in the average citizens’ interest. Be cautious of his agenda. For example, at first blush eliminating income tax on pensions seems heroic. It benefits few, if any, with modest pension income–a married couple with $45000 in pension income already pay no state or Federal income tax in most cases. His long term stated intention to abolish state income tax benefits the wealthy. He is a deceitful person. I would be glad to cite more examples but isn’t this income tax lunacy obvious enough?
Shoot from the hip much? A couple with $45,00o pension under sixtyfive pays federal income tax of $3,111 and state tax of $550 if both get the $6,000 pension exclusion.

OK, over 65 with standard deduction the pay $2,781 federal & $451 state. With $20,000 of intemized deductions they pay $1821 federal and $147 state.
Sorry. In real world senarios, no tax liability will exist for those folks. Yes, it is possible to create a hypothetical in which they would be taxed. Do you know any seniors with $50 to 55K income, lets say 33% SS, 67% IRA, average deductions, actually paying your extimated tax amount?

After reading the comments I was curious:
According to CBS news, after 31 months in office (when the article was written), Obama had taken 61 Vacation Days. GW Bush had taken 180 Days in his first 31 Months and Clinton took 28 Days in his first 31 months. So basically, Obama took about 4 to 5 weeks vacation per year. Bush took 13 Weeks per year, and Clinton took 2 Weeks per year. I’m not sure the President is really ever on vacation. And I think that the President’s family NOT having Secret Service accompaniment is NOT an option.
I’m not sure what this has to do with Paul LePage. If the taxpayers aren’t footing the bill, let him take his vacation. As a side note, he should hire Birdie Googins as personal press secretary – his daughter can still keep her job, I’m just sick of seeing the Marden’s commercials..
Paul Lepage and Pres. Obama are not the same. And you can not equate the jobs as being the same no matter who is in them at any given time. This is a Maine issue. He is Gov. of Maine. The Legislature is in session. He has several very important issues and bills before them and they only have about 3 weeks to deal with them, yet he jets off to Jamaica. I don’t mind him taking a vacation, but it is the timing issue. We went through this last year and he took a lot of heat, all deserved for his timing. He could have very easily moved the vaction off until mid April this year, but no, its my way or the highway again. He has no respect of the Legislative process, or the voters of Maine. He knows he will be a one term Gov. and he is telling all of us to kiss his butt, the Legislature included. Despite what all of you Lepage lovers say, John Baldacci was governor for 8 years and he took one weeks vacation during that time, and it was not during the Legislative session.

I asked you a question. You are the one that went off on another subject. How many 13 year olds do you know that go to Mexico without their parents. I never spoke of worshipping dictators or targeting the presidents daughter. I was simply responding to the fact that you stated that you know MANY that would go to Mexico on spring break without their parents. I was shocked. I have a 13 year old daughter and I would not let her go to BAR HARBOR on spring break without one of her parents or at least a family member.
Always has been. Even republican presidents availed themselves of these services.
But all has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic – Le Page and his unwarranted state paid trip to Jamaica.
OK, Maine is poor. But in other areas of the country, many kids–yes, 13-year-olds included–can and do get to travel on school breaks. They go to Vail to ski, to Florida to see grandparents, or to NYC to take in a Broadway show. And, yes, they go to Mexico with friends. Why is this so shocking? And what does any of it have to do with Governor Lepage?
What about Le Page? How did he fall off the page with his sudden departure to Jamaica? How was he able to just pack a bag and get a state paid trip to Jamaica? Did he take one bodyguard – like the special State Trooper he unilaterally assigned to watch his door each day? I’m sure he gets state paid travel expenses for he and his family. If not, correct me.
I can deal with the president’s daughter’s trip when that topic emerges.
First of all we do not know its state paid..LePage has been traveling there on his own bucks way before he was elected governor. This sounds like a personal vacation to me not for the state.
Then it’s high time somebody finds out. But it is somewhat reassuring to know that he paid for his own vacations before becoming ruler, prince, or king. Or, whatever else he believes he is.
Maybe that’s one of the reasons he’s trying hid his papers. Doesn’t want the taxpayer to know what we’re spending for him to go “home” regularly!! After all, he doesn’t have a home in Maine, he’s just in the Blaine House temporarily.

How about a high paying job with an all expense – free mansion, maids, butlers, security, food, vehicles, grounds maintenance, no taxes, and, unlimited travel? Unilaterally you declare papers, and other official documents off limits to the public.
All you have to do is tell Mainers they’re overweight and enjoy welfare too much. That’s Monday’s chore. Tuesday threaten more cuts to the sick. Slash state jobs. Or, make it so uncomfortable that people quit. That makes more openings for the Le Page family. Two of his family members are pulling down big salaries with complete state medical and other benefits. Each day provides a chance to ridicule people, snarl at your enemies – the press, the poor and the sick.
Ah, yes, we’re “Open for Business” and Le Page has been giving us the business since he rolled into the governor’s chair.
It would only be appropriate if he never came back.

Don’t choose a slice of data that fits you and then repeat it. Politicians take vacations…. a lot of vacations. Deal with it. If I had to do the job of a governor or president I’d probably need a lot of vacation time too. Its not as if they are “off the job” when they’re in Hawaii, Jamaica, Texas, golfing, etc. The fact that this is news is mind boggling, and the fact that people are going with with it on here is just disturbing.

One does have to give it to Paulie the First. Everytime he leaves, the Legislature actually gets things accomplished. And everytime he opens his mouth, and shoot’s himself in the foot, he bring’s both sides of the Legislature together to get thing’s done since they clearly see that Paulie has the grasp of a rock on how badly things are going here in Maine, thus forcing the Legislature to act since he’s incapable of doing anything. I don’t get it. Why can’t he take a vacation? The more responsibility one has, the more difficult it is to get away for family time. It doesn’t matter if you’re the governor, a CEO, a financial officer, an accountant, or a shift leader in a busy seasonal business, Let the man have some time away.

No one cares that he gets vacations, we care about the timing. I have a regular 9-5, but I can’t take vacation at a time when I am truly needed on my job, I have to do it when it is ok with my employer.

He isn’t part of the Legislature, so that’s a bogus charge. He’s not going to be out of touch, so if we are besieged by a tsunami or tornado, and he can be contacted, he will still be getting updates on what’s going on, no doubt.

Well contrary to popular belief the governor isnt involved or shouldnt be involved in the legislative processs. He will just need to sign into law the bill they send him or trash it. That wont take place until he is back from vacation. Why are democrats complaining about having him out of the state? He is taking a personal vacation and wont be around to help muscle bills through the congress. Republicans should be the ones who are pissed @ his vacation time. Plus Jamaica is a very affordable vacation spot.
Gov. LePage’s annual family vacation has come under scrunity (please note he is available when he is needed at any time), while the Baldacci administration received a grade of F for ethics. Why wasn’t the later investigated by the Maine press? Why is McCormick portrayed as the long suffering head of MSHA while what appears at least her choosing the utmost in lavish expenses for her and her staff could be mismangement, while thousands of Mainer’s are still on a public housing waiting list, and possibly the worst could deem her guilty of misappropriation of taxpayer money. Liberal reporters don’t seem to comprehend that Federal money also is taxpayer money, even people in Maine pay federal taxes.
