LITTLETON, Maine — A Caribou woman was injured late Tuesday evening after two cars collided on U.S. Route 1.

The crash took place just before 7 p.m., according to State Police Sgt. Brian Harris.

Taylor Hartley of Caribou was northbound in a 2003 Hyundai when Sheri Pryor pulled onto the road.

Harris said Pryor, a Monticello resident driving a 2003 Pontiac SUV, said that she did not see Hartley approaching. Hartley braked and tried to avoid Pryor but couldn’t and struck Pryor’s vehicle on the driver’s side door, flipping Pryor’s vehicle onto its side, Harris said.

A passenger in Hartley’s vehicle, Laurie Hartley of Caribou, was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital by ambulance after complaining of pain. The airbags in both vehicles deployed and all occupants were using seatbelts.

Traffic on Route 1 was contained to one lane for approximately an hour and a half while the accident was investigated and the scene cleared. Both vehicles are a total loss — Pryor’s vehicle sustained heavy damage to the driver’s side and Hartley’s vehicle sustained substantial front-end damage.

Harris was assisted at the scene by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Border Patrol and Houlton Fire and Ambulance.

  1. very scary indeed. I was caught in it for almost 45 min at a stand still.. Sure hope Mrs. Hartley fairs well.. Best wishes

  2. the driver of the suv could have been blinded by the suns glare or the car going north most likely was in one of the suv’s blindspots (vehicle post) if the driver of the suv looked but didnt see the car. i know there have been times i have looked once and didnt see anything and look again and a vehicle is right there, it was just in a blind spot the first time i looked. thats why i have gotten into a habit of looking multiple times both ways just to be 100% sure nothing is there. also in that particular area looking south there’s pretty much a straight open view to see cars coming north. my mother attends that church. glad it wasnt worse than it was.

      1. sorry, i thought in a portion of the photo there was possible sunset but now i see that wasnt the case but likely more of some sort of driver inattention on the suv’s part.
