TENANTS HARBOR, Maine — The Jackson Memorial Library recently received a $450 grant from the Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Trust of the Maine Community Foundation to support programming for youths and adults.
The grant will be used to enhance the video game collection of the library. Games will be chosen to support the collection of books, graphic novels and other media already owned by the library, the library said in a news release.
“Video game nights are one of our more popular programs with teenagers,” said Samantha Cote, associate director of the library. “Video games bring new patrons into the library and often they begin to take advantage of other library resources after being exposed to the library through gaming. Video games also require the gamer to use many different forms of literacy, by following written directions on the screen or interpreting different symbols unique to each game.”
The Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Trust helps libraries serve communities with a population less than 10,000. It is part of the Maine Community Foundation, a statewide organization that partners with donors and nonprofits to strengthen Maine communities. Maybe Im being stuffy. I would think that they would prefer to use this money for the overall good of all library patrons rather than expanding the video game collection. I agree that video games do have some good things about them. However I dont think they can compare to things like books, interesting magazines and perhaps the sponsorship of a lecture or two at the library.
