AUGUSTA, Maine — A Hamburglar has struck at a Maine McDonald’s.
Police say a young man, seemingly inspired by the pattie purloining character once featured in McDonald’s advertising campaigns, ran between a car and the takeout window at the Augusta restaurant Sunday night as an employee handed a bag of food to a driver.
A witness flagged down an officer leaving a nearby convenience store.
Lt. Christopher Massey, acting on a description of the hungry thief, found him in the parking lot of a rival fast food restaurant diving into a McDonald’s bag.
Massey told the Kennebec Journal the suspect swore and ran into the woods. He was never caught.
Massey says the three young men who had their food stolen didn’t know the burger thief.
McDonald’s replaced the stolen food, worth about $20.

This guy must have been pretty skinny to run between the car and building…..or the customer has extra long arms and left more room than I do at any drive-thru window…..but, considering the health value in a happy meal, the hamburglar probably did the guys a favor…..too funny…..
I wonder if he got extra packets of sauce.
For $0.10 a piece you can :-)
What a rip off, they used to give you a bunch and not care. Guess McDonald’s is feeling the pinch of the economy too.
I had a coupon for a “free large sandwich” so I ordered a Double QP’er with cheese, hold the mustard, add mayo. The cashier rung me up, put in the coupon, and said, “That’ll be $0.11 please.” I said, “Excuse me, I thought it was free?” To which she explained that because I had added a condiment that it was an extra $0.10 plus tax. I paid it and asked the shift supervisor if it made sense that I replaced one condiment with another and get charged for it. He told me that it was in the computer and couldn’t change it. As I was leaving I heard him mumble under his breath, “Why don’t you go to Wal-Mart and get a jar.” I was livid. Now $0.11 doesn’t break the bank, I was simply pointing out that it didn’t make much sense to charge someone to swap out condiments and the comment I got from a shift supervisor was horrible customer service so I e-mailed the corporate office and they have since changed it in the computer system. :-)
You should had asked for your mustard in a seperate container, then threw it in the trash in front of them!
I removed my comment
I removed my comment too. And compliments to you westshores.
You are correct, it is in bad taste.
this made national news…
keep it classy Augusta.
That goes to show the desperation Mainer’s are facing and it is only going to get worse…steal your food or buy drugs is probably the choice he decided to make seeing how he did it (just guessing) but there will be a time coming where it isnt because of drugs…its to feed your family…
Don’t you think a “Desperate” Mainer would stoop to stealing? I would hope not but in todays times. No what am I saying. A Mainer would find a way to make it, always have, always will.
I am guessing that this “young man” (I am speculating a teenager or a young guy in his 20s) did not steal the food out of “desperation” or “starvation”… More likely than not, he wanted McDonald’s and didn’t have any cash on him. It was not right of him by any means, but it is sort of funny, you have to admit.
It is so sad that a president and our govenor do absolutly nothing to help people. It is a sad day for us. This just goes to show you how bad some people have it. They have to steal in order to eat. He must have been really hungry.
I suppose he could always get a job…
hater! If I was truly hungry I would go into the restaurant and ask for something to eat, not steal. Or the job thing works too.
Very true Jasper, most jobs in Maine now pay “public assistance” wages and come with an EBT card to buy food with. The company mentioned in this article is a good example.
and where are the LIVABLE wage jobs these days??????
Please, between a good honest job and government assistance that is available for those with low income, there is no excuse to be stealing.
C’mon! it was a punk prank.
BINGO! That was my thought too…
That boy was hungry!!!
At least he didn’t trash the place because they were out of McNuggets!
Robble Robble.
It’s pretty funny that a completely non-political story like this can garner a comment that blames the president for tkaing money from the wealthy and giving it to the poor AND comment that blames the president for not doing enough to help the needy.
Pick an argument, folks!
Hahaha! This is AWSOME!!
Well at least he was stealing food .
Looks like he took his order (put on Horatio shades) to go. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Hold the pickles
hold the lettuce,
special hoarders don’t prevent us
all from asking have you had it taken away?
That is rather sad to think of someone this hungry.
Maine has a major drug use epidemic so we would logically also have a munchies epidemic.
Lol, so I post this on facebook and the thumbnail shows Lepage with a package of food, has the secret identity of the hamburglar been discovered by the BDN?
Gees guys, I was hungry. No jobs around.
The street children I worked with in Worcester called this “Chew&screw”
At least McDonalds replaced the goods. They could have said, ” We already filled that order.” Actually, I’m surprised they didn’t.
I would like to see that video. :D
“Bail was set at $500 for the suspect, Hamm Bergler”.
