LIMESTONE – Neva M. Thompson, 89, wife of the late Curtis A. Thompson, passed away Sunday evening, March 25, 2012, at a Caribou nursing facility, after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Abner T. and Susan (Shea) Ames.
Neva was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, class of 1940, and went on to continue her education at Aroostook State Teachers College, Presque Isle. In 1973 Neva received her degree in education from the University of Maine, Orono, and worked as a substitute teacher in the Limestone School Department for several years. She was married to Curtis A. Thompson, June 24, 1943, and had been a devoted member of Limestone United Methodist Church since 1945 where she served on several committees, Christian educational programs, taught Sunday school for several years and sang in the choir. Neva was also active in Limestone civic affairs, serving with the Limestone Visionary Group during the closing of Loring Air Force Base; she also served with Limestone School Department PTA and was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Neva was very courageous throughout her illness and was known for her humor and positive attitude. Her faith and church family kept her strong.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Curtis, July 3, 2001; one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne W. and Reta J. Ames. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Newton Haleblian of Plains, Mont., and Andrea and Art Struble of Tucson, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Kara Struble and her husband, John Hill, of Tukwila, Wash., and Kimberly Struble and fiance, John Udden, of Superior, Colo.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Neva also leaves behind a dear friend and caregiver, Mavis Churchill of Limestone; and others too numerous to mention were important in helping her live her life.
A celebration of Neva’s life will be conducted at Limestone United Methodist Church with burial to be held after at Advent Cemetery, Limestone, at a later date and time to be announced.
