CARIBOU – Robert D. Thornton, 53, died March 24, 2012, at his Ashland residence. He was born May 11, 1958, in Presque Isle, the son of Philip and Bessie (Green) Thornton.
He was a graduate of Caribou High School, class of 1976, and also a graduate of Northern Maine Technical College earning a degree in masonry. Robert was a bricklayer in the local area for several years. He attended Gray Memorial United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish; and enjoyed vintage cars and car racing.
Surviving in addition to his mother, Bessie of Caribou, are his son, Matthew Thornton of Rhode Island; his daughter, Emily Thornton of Rhode Island; a brother, John Thornton and his wife, Karyn, of Woodland; a sister, Cindy Heron and her husband, Jeffery, of Caribou; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father; and his sister, Roberta Blackstone, Feb. 19, 2012.
Graveside services will be held in the spring and will be announced in the Bangor Daily News by Mockler Funeral Home, Caribou. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Mr. Thornton may do so through the charity of one’s choice. For online register, please go to
