SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — President Barack Obama told Mainers on Friday evening that re-electing him is a vote for a strengthening economy, saying Republican challengers are proposing to “go back to the very same policies that got us into this mess in the first place.”

The Friday visit to Maine also provided many of the state’s top Democrats chances to further their agendas directly with their party’s most powerful member. Maine’s two Democratic representatives in the U.S. House handed Obama gifts symbolic of their respective initiatives and Portland Mayor Michael Brennan captured valuable one-on-one time while riding in the presidential limousine.

The president, speaking first on Friday to a sold-out Hutchinson Union Building Athletic Center at Southern Maine Community College, described Republican hopefuls — a crowd that includes former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania — as politicians who will leave behind the least fortunate Americans as the economy recovers from the recent recession.

“They want to go back to the days when Wall Street played by its own rules; they want to roll back health care,” Obama said. “Their philosophy is simple: ‘You’re on your own. … If you’re a young person coming out of poverty, pull yourself up by your bootstraps even if you don’t have boots.’”

The president talked about his early term proposals to cement wage equality between genders and more recently efforts to eliminate the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy regarding homosexual service members, to draw down the number of military personnel serving in war zones overseas and reduce tax breaks for “Big Oil.”

“Let’s take the money we’re spending at war, take half of it to pay down our debt and take the other half for nation building here at home,” Obama told the enthusiastic South Portland crowd, calling for increased spending on transportation infrastructure and social service programs.

He added, “For the first time in our history, you don’t have to hide who you love in order to serve the country you love.”

The commander in chief also called for higher taxes on Americans earning more than $250,000 annually.

“This is not class warfare, this is not class envy,” the president told the South Portland crowd. “This is just basic math. If somebody like me gets a tax break that we don’t need and the country can’t afford, either it adds to our deficit or it takes something away from somebody else.”

The president said he hopes the next hot spot for manufacturing isn’t in Asia or another location overseas but rather “right here in Maine.”

He touted the automaker bailout as one way he helped keep manufacturers afloat during the recession.

“I don’t want Americans to be known just for buying and consuming things,” Obama said. “I want Americans to be known for building things. … We’re a nation of builders.”

Obama had two fundraiser events scheduled in Maine on Friday, starting with a speech at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland — where ticket prices started at $44 for students and $100 for members of the public — and followed up with a private nightcap for bigger money donors at the Portland Museum of Art.

For a $10,000 ticket to the second event, a donor reportedly could meet and get his or her picture taken with the president.

The most recent campaign fundraising reports show that Obama finished February with a war chest of nearly $173 million, more than double the amount raised at the time by top Republican fundraiser Romney.

Friday represented Obama’s third visit to Maine while in office, following a trip to Portland to advocate for health care reform in April 2010 and a family vacation to Mount Desert Island four months later.

Preceding the president on the Hutchinson Union Building Athletic Center stage Friday were several notable Maine Democrats.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, who also owns cattle on North Haven, said before the president’s arrival that she plans to give Obama ground beef from Maine with no “pink slime,” in part to help hammer home the congresswoman’s interest in bills to block use of the pink meat filler in schools and benefit small farms.

Former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell told attendees in South Portland that it’s “critical Barack Obama be re-elected.” Mitchell talked about the president’s track record overseas, working to curb the global stockpile of nuclear weapons while “protecting our sovereignty.”

“For 10 long years, Republicans talked tough about Osama bin Laden,” Mitchell said. “Obama said little, but then had him killed. There is the difference between men of bluster and a man of action.”

While U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, did not make an appearance at SMCC, he promised before the president’s visit to give Obama a pair of custom-made New Balance sneakers, made in Maine. Like Pingree’s offering, Michaud’s gift was meant to highlight one of the congressman’s proposals, in this case a bill requiring the Pentagon to purchase American-made footwear for service members.

In afternoon hours before the president’s speech at Southern Maine Community College, a line of ticket holders stretched around three blocks, nearly a third of a mile, with some supporters showing up before 2 p.m., nearly three hours before the president arrived.

Life-sized cardboard cutouts of Barack and Michelle Obama greeted supporters as the line turned the final corner from Benjamin W. Pickett Street onto Fort Road. Just a few protesters could be seen across the street and they arrived at the early event with different ideologies. One man held a sign reading, “Christ Died for the UnGodly,” and another held a sign saying, “Let’s not be pushed into war with Iran.”

Camilla Shannon of Yarmouth — who attended the South Portland event with her parents, two young children and husband — said she hoped Obama’s message for Maine would become his consistent re-election campaign message as well.

“It’s very exciting, but it’s also smart on his part, because it gives him a chance to see a different part of the country,” Shannon said, “to see what his people want and need.”

Martha Hulbert of Woolwich described herself as “manifestly” excited to see the president speak.

“Maine is a state of wonderful levity and sanity,” Hulbert said, “and it will reinforce for him that there are some clear thinkers left in the nation.”

Not everyone in the Portland area was celebrating the president’s local events Friday night.

In the downtown near the Portland Museum of Art, members of OccupyMaine gathered with drums and signs in protest of the influence of money on politics, which occupiers said they felt was on display in Obama’s high-priced fundraising events in Maine.

Providing snacks for the occupiers was state Sen. Cynthia Dill, D-Cape Elizabeth, who handed out doughnut holes from Cookie Jar Bakery in her hometown, as well as satirically named “SuperPACs” of lobster-shaped cookies on sale “for $25,000” each.

Dill, one of four Democrats seeking the party nomination to run for the seat of retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, said she’s giving the proceeds from Friday night’s doughnut hole stand to local homelessness and hunger prevention organization Preble Street.

“I’m hopeful some of the people who paid $30,000 to see Obama will come out and donate some money to help homeless children, too,” said Dill. “The point I’m trying to make is that ordinary Americans are getting priced out of democracy. … I support the president, he’s my candidate and I understand he’s got to play by the [campaign fundraising] rules he’s been given, but if I’m elected, I plan to change the rules.”

Portland Mayor Michael Brennan found himself in the surprise position of talking to the president directly and at some length about issues facing Portland and how the federal government might help.

Brennan told the Bangor Daily News on Friday night he was caught off-guard when, after the mayor greeted the president coming off Air Force One at Portland International Jetport, Obama invited Brennan to ride in the presidential limousine to SMCC.

Brennan said he used the opening to tout Portland’s strong points — an unusually low 6 percent unemployment rate and a strong arts district, among other things — and also to seek federal help in tackling some local challenges.

The mayor said he told the president Portland needs help covering $170 million in sewer system upgrades facing the city because of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency demands, and he also talked with Obama about the local groundfishing industry, which Brennan said is struggling with federal quotas and fleet financing.

Brennan also said he told the president he took heart in Obama’s call in his State of the Union address for teenagers to stay in school until they’re 18 years old, and told the commander in chief efforts to implement such a requirement are under way in Maine.

“He was very congenial and very easy to talk to,” said Brennan, who also has met former Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Harry Truman. “He asked a lot of questions. He said that he enjoyed the visits he’s had to Maine and that Maine is a beautiful state.”

  1. Yup finish trying to bankrupt the country just like he was taught, over whelm the system., and he is doing a great job at that.

    1. Disagree, I think a $10,000 a plate fundraiser is ideal for the “food stamp emperor.” 99% occupiers, where are ya?

      1. My question is, could the $10k per person been used to support the people who do not have a job in Maine to get groceries or additional training so they can find a job.  NOPE, Obama wants to raise $1 billion to spend during his campaign scaring people about what the conservatives in the country want to do (FIX the government)

        1. Considering the secret republican PAC money being spent on the republican candidates, why would anyone expect the President to not raise cash to fight their lies?

          1. Absolutely. If Obama got a penny campaign donation for every lie the GOP fools tell, he’d have about a Trillion dollars by now.

          2. And that trillion dollars he would spend on another “Green Energy” company that would probably fail in 3 months….oh well, at least that would be a donation…not tax payer dollars…

          3. I am always amused how the right wing propagandists obliquely refer to Solyndra, which was started with the approval of the Bush administration and not completed until Obama was in office. Out of hundreds of projects the right wing spinmeisters pick the one that failed but “forget” to mention the Bush administration part in it.
The same can be said about the bank and auto industry bailouts. Blame it all on Obama. OK. IT WORKED AND SAVED THOUSANDS OF JOBS.

      2. The 99%ers are busy working in Texas and Nebraska with the Tea Party members, land owners, republicans, and democrats to  stop TransCanada from seizing private land by eminent domain to build their pipeline with Indian steel to transport Canadian oil to China and Europe.

      3. It’s better than the stinking money that rich GOP power mongers are handing out in SECRET!

      4. channel 2 news today 5k to 30k to get in, and occupiers were there and they took obama around so he did not see them.

    2. How cute is it when people who think you cut tax AND reduce the deficit talk about others “overwhelming  the system ”

      Ain’t that just cunnin’ ?

    3. I think you all should look at the bigger picture they are all getting paid by the same groups of people both party’s and both party’s were more then happy to sell out this country.while they main stream the can’t fix the budget theme, they work away removing our right’s behind closed doors. They allow bills to militarize our police forces and use drones on American people. They allowed the banks to gamble away Social Security and 401k’s,There was at one time after the Great Depression laws put in place to keep that from happenning. Our guys in the Gov. removed them. They are pretty much declaring Romney the president in the medea doesn’t matter if you vote or not anymore.

      1. Finally, someone with a common sense view. The only problem is that people just get stuck on one view and don’t or won’t accept that both parties are just as corrupt.

Time to vote “None of the Above”.

  2. I guess our Governor must of had a hot date and had to pospone meeting the President at the airport. He is to busy stacking the deck on the east/west highway. I hope he gets on it and don’t come back.

    1. Bin Laden dead, troops out of Iraq, the economy is getting stronger by the day……I would have to agree Burton 1, Obama is doing a good job! All the good news must be discouraging to Republicans as all they have to offer are hand wringing and two out of touch candidates.

      1. I will give you the first two. But the economy is hardly recovering, it is acting more on itself than anything, having little to do with anything Obama has done. And any improvements in the economy would have come at quite the cost. He has already spent, what? ~$3 Trillion. That is all fine and dandy until you realize that most of that money came from the federal reserve, where did they get their money? They printed it. In case you haven’t noticed the price of groceries or gas lately, they have gone up substantially as a result of the inflation caused by the insane levels of spending.

These levels of spending are unsustainable, keep it up for another ~5 years and see what happens. We will be using all of our revenue just to pay the interest, then we’re really screwed.

        1. I will not give you the first two….yes Obama was the president when Bin Laden was killed…but A.) do you think he realllly had anything to do with it other than saying ok, do it? B.) this is not an accomplishment of the president…it is an accomplishment of the military C.) do you think he is the only person that would have given the green light to kill or apprehend Bin Laden? Anyone with half a brain stem could have done the work that he did in that mission.  Don’t put hold him on high for this…it the UNITED STATES military…the best in the world

          1. While I completely agree with you, and I state the same thing when people say that “well Obama killed Osama.” My “giving him the first two” was really more a statement saying that those two things did happen while Obama was president. While Obama may not have really have anything to do with it, it happened “under his watch.” And while it means nothing to me, it definitively does to the majority of the American public.

  3. Do us all a favor and just resign!!!  I don’t have the answers but I know there not with Obama.

      1. What does he have to do with a discussion about the President? I’m sure you hated him even before he accepted the torch.

        1. Maybe you should read the whole thread, my short sighted friend !!! I was responding to someone who had wanted Obama to resign. I was simply drawing a comparision. Got it ?

  4. Obama is Irish ,not Hawaiian, right?
Cause he sure is full of Blarney.

Sorry I cant make the dinner , I’m $ 9,999.00 short of the fee.

      1.  Nice try NY , but not quite.
Perhaps Pingree/Sussman could spring for the ticket.
They have more money than Mitt and B.Hussein combined.

    1. But at least he knows how to punctuate a contraction, bro — more than we can say about you.

        1. Actually, no, MF, that’s not what makes him “great”: he also knows how to compose and employ ellipsis dots correctly. And probably knows to capitalize the first-person pronoun. And to end a sentence with a period.

    1. You have no Maine welcome for the President of the United States, or a Nobel laureate, even?  If you have nothing nice to say to our distinguished visitor, maybe it’s time to turn off your television.

      1. Nobel prize for what actually? Exhisting? Failing miserably at a job?

Seriously though, what the hell did he get it for?

          1. If Obama got it, I should be able to also, everyone should. Just in case we do something worth it one day

          1. Yeah, that sure is true, he has leaked info about our allies, he has taken a back seat to other countries in deciding what happens to our troops and he Bowed to another head of state.  He does not deserve a Maine welcome, he is not like us, he has never worked hard a day in his life.

          2. “So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch… And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.

Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off — 28 days.”

            http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-18563_162-20093801.html

          3. Because genious, he won it before he did anything. Granted he still hasnt done anything, but thats like giving a bad actor an academy award, in case he makes a great movie some day.

        1. I believe that is know as a “typo’ . You should of been able to figure that one out on your own. But just in your case, I meant goodbye.

          1. Well, PDE, there is a little “EDIT” button that you could use to fix what you allege is a typo.  Just like that button could be used to:

            1.  Place two quotation marks around a word, rather than one quotation mark and an apostrophe.

            2. Place punctuation within quotation marks.

            3. Replace “of” with “have” — i.e., “You should HAVE been able to…”

Try it some time. It’ll do wonders for your online credibility.

          2. Sorry I did not edit my post. I did not read it after posting.  I usually do not post as if I am writing a term paper, but thanks for all of your criticism anyway. I sure can see that you are of supreme intellect.

If you don’t mind though, I have a word of advice for you…. Maybe if you would stop repeating lines from Fox News and the Rush Limbaugh show it would do wonders for your own online credibility.

        1. Like how to punctuate contractions, DS?  Some of us did.  Did you pay any attention in fifth grade, bro?

          1. Really? You’re going to pick out the fact that someone spelled didn’t without the ‘

You have a veryyyyy uninteresting life. By the way, on behalf of all the people who pay for your food stamps and probably 6 kids…you’re welcome.

        2. I’ll admit it, I voted for Bush and then I voted for Obama…because I was uneducated in the world of politics and I bought into all the “HOPE and CHANGE” BS….I will not make that mistake again..

      1. All the suckers and fools voted in Bush and now we are left with the mess Bush and the fools caused.

      1. 2007-2008, are you referring to the housing market crash? The crash that was created by a false economic environment that was created by the Federal Government? While I do not particularly like Bush, the crash had virtually nothing to do with him. Think Community Reinvestment Act.

Obama COULD shine if he were to be re-elected, but he needs to get government spending under control and he needs to start acting like a leader and stop blaming everybody else for everything. It is like he never left campaign mode.

        1. I am talking about Bush’s handling of the economy that led to the 07-08 crash, not just the housing market. I have never heard Obama blame anyone else. I have heard him state facts about the situation he found upon his election. Do you watch Fox News ? That could explain our differences in thinking ?

          1. Are you kidding me, he has blamed the republicans holding the government hostage over the debt ceiling, he blamed Bush for the first 3 years for all the issues he caused since he took office.  My question is who is he going to blame for the gas prices, he blamed Bush in the ’08 campaign and the prices are higher now than in ’08.

          2. Everyone should recognize that blaming the President, whether democrat or republican, is nothing more than election year politics, and ignore it. The only thing any President can do to lower gas prices is release supplies from the national reserves, and that is never going to be more than a short term solution with prices going back up after a couple months.
Of course if politicians would urge Americans to stop buying from China and buy only American made that would reduce their manufacturing and demand on the world oil market. But of course that will never happen.

          3. No No No.. we do not have a supply problem so releasing reserves is not only not productive but it’s dangerous.. it is to be used for emergencies not for political gain… gas prices are a product of profits taken by speculators and the oil Co.s

          4. Bush deserves the blame as well as the fools who elected him. How come you guys have managed to forget that your foolish votes got us two expensive wars, an unpaid for Prescription Part D plan, two tax cuts mostly for the rich costing us $4 Trillion in revenues, then he mismanaged the economy  and did nothing about it while being a lame duck, handed off to Obama an economy hemorrhaging 700, 000 jobs per month. He had a surplus when he started his term then blew it all and his poor management of the economy required intensified deficit spending.  GAS PRICES  got up to $4.10/gallon in the summer of 2008 and went down after Bush tanked the economy.  They are rising now due to unchecked investor speculation which the GOP is OK with.

          5. The tax cuts to the rich cost us nothing. It was the recession in the early 2000’s that cost us all that revenue. When you rely so heavily on the wealthy to pay the taxes, when you go into a recession the number of wealthy people gets cut nearly in half, and all of a sudden the government loses a really large chunk of their revenue. If you look at our near 100 year history of taxing income you will find that the rates have been really high, and really low yet despite this our revenues have always hovered around 18% of our GDP, falling during recessions, and rising during booms. Besides, Bush cut taxes for everybody.

          6. Everyone is blaming the Mitch McConnel and John Boehner blockade for preventing thecountry from moving forward.  Republicans have just one goal stamped on their foreheads since Obama was elected – to see that he is not re-elected.   That’s all.  They couldn’t care any less about Americans than the three twerps who blame Obama for everything.

          7. I do not watch Fox News.

And if you’ve never heard Obama blame others, then you have never heard him speak. He blames Bush and Republicans for literally everything. I do not care if it is, or is not their fault, I do not want a leader who instead of dealing with issues simply goes around blaming everyone.

          8. That is all he knows how to do~don’t expect anything from him..because that is what we are all going to get..nothing!  Just a lot more problems..as proven so far.  another 4 years of that and him running all over to be seen and make points..in this economy?  He sickens me~

          9. If you don’t watch Fox news as you claim you must liston to the Voice of Maine and Rush Limbaugh all day long. Which one is it ? Be honest with yourself.

          10. I thought I heard Mittens (R)money blaming Obama for everything, I guess it is OK for R’s to blame everyone but themselves, although it sounds a little hypocritical to me.   Let me know if I am wrong.

          11. I don’t believe I said anything about Mitt Romney in my comment. You’re are assuming that because I do not like Obama I must be a Republican, I must have loved Bush, and I must love Romney. None of which are true.
As I stated in one of my previous comments, it is like he never left campaign mode. If this were 2008 and he was blaming Bush, and the Republicans for everything that is one thing, as he is not in office and has no control or influence. But he is president now, and has been for the past 3 years. He needs to stop blaming Bush, and Republicans, and he needs to stop blaming the constitution for not allowing him to be dictator of the US.

If Romney is elected and in three years into his term is still blaming the democrats and Obama for everything, then yeah, I will have a problem with that. The president needs to not play politics with everything, and instead needs to unite both the American people and the political parties.

          12. I do not watch either Fox or MSNBC. I find they are both bias. By the way I am not a liberal, nor am I a registered Democrat. Sorry to disappoint you.

          13. That’s the funny thing about Neo-Cons….Anyone who doesn’t agree 100% with their “Radical Right” agenda is labeled a Liberal ! What a shame, how narrow minded. Oh well…

          14. Yet, anyone who doesnt agree with you, watches fox news or limbaugh. Its the hypocrisy that gives you away as liberal

          15. Huh ? ” Your lie…. you can tell it a big as you want to”,” is a metaphor ! Okay ?

          16. Ok, just to be clear, anyone who doesnt agree with you, watches faux news, or listens to limbaugh, but its somehow wrong to assume you watch pmsnbc.

            Ok, got it.

          17. No you don’t have it ! It fine to disagree providing one has something to say. However I don’t agree with anyone that constantly repeats Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh’s talking points over and over again. They are both brainless extremists. Sorry !

          18. No, I think I got it just fine. Rather you like it or not, it is ok for a conservative, to see whats going on in the world, and come to his own conclusions, rather you agree with them or not, but, because you dont, you make the assumption they get it elsewhere. Yet when that same logic (if you can call it that) is applied to you, you dont seem to like it as much.

          19. Why do you doubt what PDE has said about him- or herself? My guess it’s because the type of television shows you watch and the radio shows that you listen to have succeeded in fomenting within you an us vs. them world-view.  Paulie — are we not all Mainers? Am I not your neighbor? Why does a differing point of view represent such an existential threat, my brother?

          20. Everyone should watch BOTH just to see the disaster that Ronald Reagan created when he vetoed the Fairness Doctrine.

MSNBC  Stretches the truth sometimes but I have to admit that Fox Makes it look like Stretch Armstrong is their Editor!

          21. get it right ..please.. the senate Majority was not a conservative one.. Bush did not get to do as he pleases.. the policies that lead to the housing crisis were from the left.. not the bush bunch.. you have not heard Obama blame anyone else ..are you serious >>/?? perhaps that box you are living under needs some windows  OMG … typical… the blinders are firmly in place and let no real knowledge enter the space

          22. Once again….. you sound as if you are reading copy for Fox News. Don’t you realize we have heard it all before. I guess that some on the right believe if you tell a lie enough times it will become the truth. You are not helping your argument when you quote “Fox News” verbatim.

FOX NEWS = BLINDERS ! Please try to remember the Fox News motto…. “We deceive and you believe”.. Thanks

          23. You guessed wrong. I don’t watch either fox or msnbc, both are extremly bias. The others tell both sides of a story ! I am taking an educated guess that you only watch (believe) fox news ?

          24. Educated based on what? Wishing it were true? Wow, youre a bright one.

BBC actually, all news is biased one direction or the other, but bbc seems the least so.

          25. I would have to get my daily “brainwashing” from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh to be as bright as you.

          26. It is more like twisting my words, not using them my friend. They do that on Fox News all the time too.

          27. They do it on msnbc all the time too, but then , you are well aware of that. Were you sad when they canned Olbermann?

He has another show on a network even less watched than msnbc, but I sure you knew that too

        2. Toy – how did the CRA cause the crash?  If only folks digested the falsified information which is forced down our throats by folks trying to push an agenda it probably would not be regurgitated as frequently as it seems to occur now.

4 problems with the CRA conspiracy theory – first, the CRA only applies to depositories not mortage brokerages firms.  Most of the lenders initially involved with mortgages during the housing boom did not fall under guidelines of CRA (initially used intentionally as many mortgages were quickly resold and repackaged – point 4 to follow).  Secondly, there is no requirement within the CRA where a financial institution needed to place itself in financial danger to make these loans – in fact, the requirement of the CRA is to the contrary.  Third, if the CRA caused the housing meltdown, the bubble would have been isolated to low-income areas where these loans are made, correct?  The simple fact of the matter is these areas were the least affected by the meltdown, and in fact, families with higher incomes were the ones most likely to not pay their mortgage and abandon their homes.  Finally, research the role derivatives played in the meltdown — Think GREED and desire to jump into the hot, but significantly inflated, real estate market to try to make an easy profit.

I do agree with your points regarding controlled spending but your research is lacking as it pertains to the housing market.  I found reading the Act itself beneficial – should you wish to confirm statements made above, link is below:

          http://www.federalreserve.gov/communitydev/cra_about.htm

        3.  Lack of regulation not over regulation that caused the housing finance crisis.

          Know your history.

          1. So in a nutshell, back in the day, banks used to loan money to people who could pay the money back. But that was considered racist (because everything is racist) so the government said “hey banks, you should loan everybody money! don’t worry though, ’cause we got your backs!” So the banks said “why not? we will make money, and we can simply sell our bad loans to the government.”

So it wasn’t really over-regulation, or under-regulation, it was more like the government being stupid like they always are.

And if you feel that there wasn’t enough regulation please explain, I am willing to listen, since I do not know my history.

          2. I do know my history and was employed at an S&L during the 80’s serving residential mortgage clients, we were trained on CRA compliance.  That is NOT what happened in 2008.  What happened in 2008 is due to:  flipping, derivatives, greed and basically institutions selling bad paper all over the world so that when the market topped out, everything came down like a house of cards.  What they were doing with lending products, we would NEVER have done. It was bad business practices 101.  Those banks should NEVER have been bailed out.

            CRA.  lol.

          3. There were also cases like the Countrywide lending practices where agents  fabricated information or altered applications so that the applicant received a loan. It went as far as cutting out the signature from the original application, pasting onto a fabricated form, and then photocopying it to make it look like the applicant had filled in false figures. That is according to Countrywide’s former head of the fraud division.

          4. Yes, exactly right, they were notorious.  But let’s not forget all the firms, large and small who flipped properties until the market collapsed.  Or the irresponsible home owners (yes, from white neighbors not CRA affected communities) who kept rewriting their mortgages and spending the money on vacations.

The real estate market was a like drunken orgy.  It was totally out of control.  The banks did not deserve a bail out.

        4. The Veto Pen is the only thing that he has !

Thats why he sounds like he is campaigning.

The House is the problem not the President!

      2. I do remember 07 and 08, Pelosi and Dems took control of congress where all laws and spending are done! That’s when the mess started!!!!

    1. Jed — why do you so fear accountability?  Have you no sense or awareness of historical accuracy?

      1. Historical accuracy indicates the democrats had total control of the House and Senate from 2006-2008 upon Bush’s departure, and they had control until 2010. It was the decisions of the House Finance Committee headed by Dodd and Frank that mandated Fannie and Freddie to write mortgages to people that basically had no way of making good on the loans that started the death spiral of the economy in 08. I’m not saying Bush had no responsibility in the matter, but there was a lot of blame to go around which the democrats have accepted none publicly.

        1. I have heard from corporate executives I know that the Dodd-Frank bill has kept them from hiring twice the number of people they would have hired without that bill in place. We have to trust in the checks and balances of our great democracy. It’s been hard for me to reconcile the damage D-F has done with my hope for our country.

          1. Try working in the mortgage industry and dealing with D-F.  We spend more time collecting info about race, sex, marital status and stuff and have to make sure that we are not being unfair to lower income borrowers instead of trying to lend money to people who can actually put 20% down and still have money in the bank to protect the investment.

          2. The United States is a republic, not a democracy. Normally, I’m not one to pick apart the fine details. But since you’ve taken it upon yourself to become the punctuation police- I thought I’d offer my assistance too :)

        2. Historical accuracy means that you must be called out for saying that the Dems had total control from 2006-2010. Bush was prez and could veto anything until early 2009, if anything passed into law, Bush signed it into law. After that, the GOP did a record number of filibusters in the Senate and as you should know, that one tactic gives both parties EQUAL footing as to whether anything passes.

          1. And the dems did not gain control of Congress until January 2007 after winning the 2006 elections. At any rate, the republicans blame everything on the democratic President when republicans are in control of Congress, but it is Congress’ fault when the dems are in control. As an example, the repeated blocking of Presidential appointments and democrat sponsored bills by the republicans for the last 3 years are somehow the fault of the democrats.

          2. I’m aware of the official record. I need not be called out on anything. Your I.D. would indicate it doesn’t matter how I defend my statement,  your opinion of anything right of center is not very good. Pretty sophisticated handle I must say. With that being said, President Bush vetoed 12 times in office. Most presidents prior to him vetoed 36-78 times or more regardless of party affiliation. There is no doubt the filibuster was used excessively during the first 18 months of President Obamas tenure. Most of it was indeed gamesmanship for sure. This statistic only tell part of the story. If you want to use it to support your argument, so be it. And it will work. But it doesn’t elaborate on why so much filibustering was used. One has to look at what was  being filibustered in the first place. Given a lot of it was the democrat machine attempting to ramrod it’s agenda, the republicans were left with no other device to prevent the agenda from moving forward short of crossing the isle. It works both ways, and both parties have done it a lot since the sixties, as has the veto. Both parties have used the veto fairly consistently over the last 50 years. The only reason you have to display your frustration is the fact that the whole tactic was effective in blocking the the game changers you dems have been looking for. Don’t expect anyone on the right to roll over anytime soon on the issues that motivate your party. That is the crux of the disfuctionality of Washington in general. Both parties have drawn a line in the sand, and aren’t crossing it. And for good reason. If the left gets its way, the country as we know it will be on its way to a total transformation of it’s economic and social system. Some Dems downplay that thought as paranoia, and McCarthyism. If Dems really believe their lives will be better in 50 years if their party implements social justice, and government run healthcare, along with abolishing capitalism the way we know it, they are in for a rid awakening. On the surface, most of what they have to offer looks harmless even to those that oppose it, but if one looks into world politics deep enough, this type of governing has never been anything that resembles success. Go ahead, flame away.

      2. I am accountable for my actions obama is not, its china fault, its bush’s fault, its the fault of the atm’s ect…….. where is his accountability for spending more money in 3 years then all the Presidents prior to him.  Talk about doing a little history, we are reaching 16 trillion in debt, and obama wants to raise it not cut it, you can not get out of debt by borrowing more every try to pay of your debt by paying it with a credit card it never works.  Even if you taxed the top 10% of the highest income earners at a 99% rate in would not fix the spending in D.C., fact the top 10% of wage earners pay 70% of the tax burden in D.C.  Where is the fairness in that

        1. for what percentage of income do those top 10% account?  Would you be in agreement that if it was 70% or more than their tax burden is fair?

    1. Sorry, you’re being so cheaply insulted by such a rude commenter. BDN doesn’t care apparently, so they’ve deleted all of my comments supporting you.

  5. Nobama is devoid of any leadership skills but boy can he campaign.  BTW, where are all the teleprompters?  I did notice his union puppetmasters in the background though, pulling all the strings to make sure they don’t need to participate in NobamaCareless

    1. Why, F_L, are you so filled with hatred? Did your mom not have enough love to spread around in the family?

        1. WOW, intelligent comebacks…glad to see the Obama supporters are so witty…just like you’re leader, all talk and no substance

        2. Yours spread plenty of love for everyone.

See how stupid these insults are, but, if you cant bring a ligitimate argument throw insults

  6. His message is simply to follow AGENDA 21, the communist takeover of our Constitutional Republic. If reelected and we can only pray not, his hideous plans will unfold quickly, and with little opposition.

  7. “Their philosophy is simple: ‘You’re on your own. … If you’re a young person coming out of poverty, pull yourself up by your bootstraps even if you don’t have boots.’”

I’d rather pull myself up by my bootstraps than have to rely on the government to provide for me and my family.

    1. No kidding! He is trying to insult ‘us’ for something we’re damn proud of! I’m sure it garners some applause from the liberal elites, which is all he cares about. Funny how pulling up one’s bootstraps used to be admired, now it’s mocked. Independent, hard-working Americans are Obama’s enemies- because we don’t rely on HIM for our groceries, our paychecks, our health, our answer to every question. Simply put, he knows he doesn’t have our votes and never will.

      1. Funny how sharing the wealth used to be admired , now it’s mocked by fools who think it’s perfectly OK for a CEO to make 600 times what his laborers make.

        1. “Sharing” is a voluntary act. You are in favor of expropriation.

“There are people in need of help. Charity is one of the nobler human
motivations. The act of reaching into one’s own pockets to help a
fellow man in need is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone
else’s pocket is despicable and worthy of condemnation.” –Williams

        2. Sharing of ones wealth is admired, but only when it’s done by choice and not forced redistribution.

        3. Funny how being successful has become some evil plot to destroy the world, starve old people and kill tiny kittens….

Obama intends to remove all responsibility from Americans so that the government can take care of you…and by take care of you I mean: tell you what to do, what to eat, how to spend your money, how to raise your kids, what to drive and what to learn

  8. Maybe you need to re-take a math class, obama has spent more money in his 1st three years, the the 1st 40 Presidents prior to 2008, starting with George Washington, that includes President George W. Bush.

    1. Factually incorrect, Jed. Search the Web and see what you come up with. What fear envelops you.

      1. Recent US Federal Deficit Numbers Obama FY 2012: $1,327 billion FY 2011: $1,300 billion FY 2010: $1,293 billion. Total = $3,920 billion. Bush FY 2009: $1,413 billion FY 2008 $459 billion FY 2007 $161 billion Total= $2,033 billion. The federal deficit is the amount each year by which federal outlays in the federal budget exceed federal receipts. But the gross federal debt increases each year by substantially more than the amount of the deficit each year. That is because a very large amount of Federal borrowing is not accounted for in the budget. Gross Federal debt 2009 $11.9 trillion 2012 $16.4 trillion. = $4.5 trillion increase.

        1. Thanks Jim & CM1 for your research. One thing I do not grasp is how people totally hold the Obama presidency responsible for our national debt, when we are part of a global economy: do we all know what’s going on in Greece and Spain and Portugal and Italy and elsewhere? I know President Obama spent a truckload of money to try to bolster our economy: I am not an economist and so I can’t fully gauge the wisdom or targeting of his economic policies and tactics, but I do know that he seems to have saved us from hitting truly rock-bottom bankruptcy, especially in light of the pre-existing debt, the outrageous expenses of our wars, and buffeting from global markets.  If no other country has been able to restore itself to high employment rates and high output in the past few years, I’m wondering whether it’s fair to expect anyone — Republican or Democrat — to be able to pull us out of this in 3 years.  I’m sure Republicans say yes it is fair to expect and Dems say sure look at all his great work.  But I hate having to view this as a partisan issue: the whole world is going to hell in a handbasket and we must take strategic policy risks that do not destroy the middle class or favor inappropriately the upper class.  Angry people on this board call me “liberal” or “Democrat” when in fact I am neither: I’m just a sensible Mainer like, I would hope, the rest of us here. But I do know that partisanship and hatred and categorizing and negation is not the way to preserve our great democracy. And every time I think of it, Sen. Olympia Snowe’s editorial on why she isn’t running for re-election comes to mind: that was a beautiful, spot-on piece.  And then posters here will say, “Oh, she’s a RINO” or a “moderate” or whatever Fox “News” term they swallow just to dismiss an opposing view, no matter how much wisdom may reside in that view.  I got no big answers.  But I do consider myself an hospitable Mainer and I welcome to Portland this evening — I hope graciously —  both the President of the United States and the distinguished Snoop Dogg.

          1. You just stated it perfectly, yes we see what is happening in Europe, it is called big government socialism and it causes countries to go bankrupt and it is the plan of the administration to overwhelm the system.  The reason they want high gas prices is to make people drive smaller cars like Europe as a form of population control as families cant have more kids because they can’t take them in the car.  Europe does not have the revenue from the working generation to support the retired people any longer.

          2. Dad — President Obama has no control over the price of gas at the pumps.  Here’s why.

            http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/23/opinion/krugman-paranoia-strikes-deeper.html

            __________

…First, the lie: No, President Obama did not say, as many Republicans now claim, that he wanted higher gasoline prices. He did once say that a cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions would cause electricity prices to “skyrocket” — an unfortunate word choice. But saying that such a system would raise energy prices was just a factual statement, not a declaration of intent to punish American consumers. The claim that Mr. Obama wanted higher prices is a lie, pure and simple.

And it’s a lie wrapped in an absurdity, because the president of the United States doesn’t control gasoline prices, or even have much influence over those prices. Oil prices are set in a world market, and America, which accounts for only about a tenth of world production, can’t move those prices much. Indeed, the recent rise in gas prices has taken place despite rising U.S. oil production and falling imports.

Finally, there’s the paranoia, the belief that liberals in general, and Obama administration officials in particular, are trying to make driving unaffordable as part of a nefarious plot against the American way of life. And, no, I’m not exaggerating. This is what you hear even from thoroughly mainstream conservatives…
            __________

          3. If he has no control he really is a bad president because he blamed Bush for high prices in 08 so if he can’t control them is stinks at his job because Bush could.

          4. If you can turn down the volume on your Fox, Beck, and PEOPLE magazine, read the NYT article linked, Dad.  It might enlighten you.  And no, former president Bush was not able to “control” gas prices. World oil markets and refinery output doesn’t work that way, the concept of an “Energy Czar” notwithstanding.

And by the way, could you tell us which bank or mortgage company you work for? I need to make a note of never going in there, if you represent the extent of your organization’s customer orientation.  Thanks.

          5. You stated earlier that you don’t understand economics yet you are now an expert on gas prices?
Maybe you should diversify your sources of information and turn down the volume on MSNBC and other Obama puppetmasters.  Price of a commodity is a direct function of supply and demand.  Supply goes down….price goes up.  Supply goes up…..price goes down.  Open up our reserves and we will be energy independent as we have over 200 years of proven reserves.  Obama will not do this as he is beholden to the unproven and inefficient technologies of the green companies.

Please tell us what company you work for as I will make sure not to do business with a company idiotic enough to hire someone of your values and inferior intelligence. (JK, your last paragraph was just as unfair as my last sentence.)

          6. We are now producing more oil in this country than at any other time. Demand has decreased due to the economy. Yet gasoline is nearing an all time high. The reason? It is a world traded commodity and demand in China and India is up. The US now produces 60% of what we consume, we import less than before. Increasing production in the US will have virtually no effect on the price of gas in the US because the multi-billion dollar international oil companies are not under obligation to sell that oil in the US. They will most likely sell it on the world market to the highest bidder-China.
Trying to pass a law requiring oil produced here to be sold here will fail because, like the attempt to remove tax breaks, the oil industry will pressure their hired Congresspeople (republicans) to vote against it.
Records for the last 36 years show that increased oil production does not result in lower gas prices.

          7.     If any President had the ability of direct control over the oil prices it would be the ones deeply affiliated with the oil industry.

I would suspect that the oil industry Controls Presidents!

            NOT the other way around!

          8. Prove that statement, he said no such thing.  Every other Democrat and many Republicans blamed Bush but Obama never did.

          9. Yes, Jeddy, The New York Times.  Permit me my weakness & delusions in thinking that Nobel laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning writers and analysts might have a somewhat more informed perspective than television personalities.  By the way, Jeddy — when is the last time you read an issue of the NYT? Or visited the BBC or Al Jazeera websites to cultivate within yourself your own “fair and balanced” world view?  Or have your media outlets spoon-fed you whom to demonize and you just regurgitate what you’re fed? Just wondering, Jed.

          10. Yet it all Bush’s fault, you all blamed Bush when the gas prices went up, and screamed see what happens when you have an Oil Man in Office, the dem always have a short memory, just like the WMD’s that was pushed 1st by President Clinton, John Kerry, Mrs. Clinton, Albright ect… long before Bush.  Go back and watch the tapes of Hannity and Clomes, any time Hannity said anything about Clinton, Colmes screamed HE IS NOT IN OFFICE ANYMORE, like when Hannity said it was Clinton”s fault for 9/11 because Clinton did not accept binladen on a platter when he was President.

Listen to obama own words, if I can not get it done in 3 years, then I’ll be a one term President, spoken on the Today show to matt.

          11. I’m not blaming anyone. We all know Washington is broken and all we see is the extremes on both sides blaming each other for the problems. This November this Country has a big decision to make and I believe the quiet majority will make the right choice. Just my opinion.

          12. It took 15 years to recover from the Depression, but GOP fools expected that the economy should be completely recovered from the BUSH Recession in less than two.

          13. Well they are pretty much both on the same level as I look at it..and sure would not want Snoop as president either!

          14. And the way that you look at it is . . . two African-American men visiting America’s whitest, most-rural state, practically in your own back yard?

A multi-Grammy-winning musician and a Nobel laureate visiting our state. Worse things could happen.

          15. I never looked at it as a race thing…but if you want to got ahead..One is a druggie  entertainer that I really have no respect for and the other is bringing this country down and that gets no respect form me either…neither of them is so great in my eyes.

          16. Its always about race to the liberals. Its all they have, thats why they were so dead set on getting Herman Cain out of the race. They need to be able to play the race card.

          17. Well that is awful.  Such a shame.  Herman Cain was doing great till they dug up the dirt..and really???who cares..he had some good ideas.  We tolerated Bill’s indiscretions and to be honest I would not mind having him back…or Hillary~

          1. U S Government budgets start Oct 1st. So Bush Fiscal year budget started Oct1st 2008 but ended in 2009, thus they call it the 2009 Fiscal year budget. It doesn’t by go by calender year like me and would do.

      2. When Bush left office, the national debt stood at $10T.  This debt increased $5T in 8 years under Bush.  In just 3 years obama has increased the national debt $6T.  Look it up Helen.  Obama is going to bankrupt this country.

        1. Bush started the bankrupting by blowing a SURPLUS going forward by two foolish wars, an unpaid for prescription drug plan, two tax cuts mostly for the rich costing the Treasury another $4 Trillion in revenues, then he tanked the economy and did NOTHING about it.

          1. You are incorrect.  When Bush took office, the national debt stood at $5T.  Truth hurts doesn’t it.

          2. How quickly people forget 9/11….let me ask you this; in 2001-2002 did you think we should engage in an effort to find the man who orchestrated the attacks on the U.S.? I agree with your obvious next question of “why were we in Iraq?” yes that may have been a bad deal.  But getting rid of a dictator that was definitely not friendly to the U.S. or our allies was not a “foolish war”.
Atleast Bush had the backing of the U.S. people and Congress before he did so….What did BO do last year in Libya? Was that not foolish? And what exactly did we get out of that??

          3. We aided in eliminating a dictator who had previously killed innocent American lives (Lockerbie) without the loss of a single American serviceman and without a ten year war.

    2. I would like you to prove that.   I know you won’t because you can’t prove the non-provable.

  9. If all those Republicans in the Legislature didn’t gang up against President Obama, this country would already be in recovery. Instead, the entire party did everything in its power to create one nasty schism in this once great nation. Shame on them.

      1. Nope. Because of the filibuster rule BOTH PARTIES have EQUAL power in the senate and nothing can be done if just one person filibusters, something your beloved GOP did a record 138 times during 2009-2010.

    1. All they want is to make him look bad thats there gold from day one they don’t care if they bring america down as long as they make him look bad an defeat him. They are doing what Rush Lim . has said from day ome

    2. Coming from a person that voted for GW Bush in ’04 and McCain in ’08, there is no doubt that I will be voting for President Obama in ’12.

      1.  Opponents can deny it all they want, but the economy is strengthening.  The day President Bush left office, the Dow Jones Industrial average was at 8,077 points.  Today the average is over 13,000 points.  Complain about the extra 50-60 cents at the gas pumps if you want to, but I’ll take the extra 60% in my 401K any day.

      2.  Thanks to the economic stimulus, the auto industry is back from the dead and putting people back to work…just ask anyone from Detroit who they are going to vote for.

      3.  The day President Bush was inaugurated, the average price of gasoline was $1.45 per gallon.  It reached $4.05 in his last year in office.

      4.  Under President Obama, we have already brought our brave men and women home from one war and it looks like there will be a significant down sizing of troops in the other.  I certainly do not fault President Bush for the war in Afghanistan, but I think it is very reasonable to now admit that the war in Iraq was essentially senseless.

      5.  Most importantly, I am scared to death to think of how Gingrich or Santorum (not quite as much with Romney) would handle the unstable state of Iran.  Before we send our men and women in uniform to fight another battle, we MUST try using the diplomatic approach.  I believe this president will exhaust all options before involving us in another war…I can’t say the same for all of his potential political opponents.  **”War is only a cowardly way out of the problems of peace.” ~ Thomas Mann

Refute it, rebut it, live in fear if you chose; but I know what I see and the choice is clear for me in ’12.  Good luck Mr. President.

      1.  Great post. I also leaned toward the Republican side in the past, but they have become a party that Eisenhower or Reagan wouldn’t even recognize. This GOP has become so hateful it’s sickening. They listen to the Limbaugh and Beck  and quote them verbatim, talk about indoctrinated….I hope that the FACTS in your post will help others to see the light….Peace

      2. Respect! Well thought out and a good read…you should (if you’re not already) be a journalist for this paper. I appreciate your opinion and how you didn’t have to make someone out to be the bad guy.  You’re right about the GOP being a far cry from the party of the past.  I do not necessarily agree with your analysis of President Obama, but to each their own.  That’s why we have elections, right?? Everyone else in this thread (including me) should use this as an outline for how posts should be written.

        Thanks!

        1. Thank you!  I’m not a journalist, just a lowly school teacher.  As an American, because their failures and successes are directly tied to mine, I respect and am an advocate for all of our elected officials.  Regardless of how I vote, once in office, I want our public representatives to succeed (whether they be a school board member, a state congress person, or the President of the United States).  I cannot in good faith cheer for a politician to fail, because that means I too would be failing.  I try to support them and hope they succeed.

I use the following analogy with my students:  If you want to go eat at one restaurant, but everyone else in your party wants to eat at a different restaurant, are you going to “cheer” for your meal to be terrible?  You are “stuck” with the result regardless, so you might as well adjust and hope that your opinion wins out next time.  I feel we should have the same mindset when it comes to our politicians/elected officials.

I also respect the office of the Presidency regardless of who hold the office.  I get frustrated when I read people writing about “Obama” or “Bush”.  Regardless of their policies, I respect their office and the job they face, so to me they will always be President Obama and President Bush.

    3. Oh you mean just like in 2006-2008, do not forget the dems had 61 votes to pass anything they wanted for the 1st two years, and could not even get the 61 dems to fall in step, either party that has that kind of control is dangerous.

  10. Bush was a bad president who spent too much money. That being said, compared to Obama, Bush’s deficits pale in comparison. Obama spends way to much money, and needs to calm down.

    1. Under Bush the excessive spending lead to the recession. Under Obama the excessive spending is leading (although very slowly) to an improving economy.  Any one who was aware of the state of the economy in 2008 and expected the new President to have a miracle cure was a fool. I am curious as to why people expect anyone to undo 8 years of mismanagement of the economy in 3 years.

      1. Do you understand how foolish you sound?  Bush spent money and it led to a recession but Obama spending money is leading us out.  Really?

        1. Yes really. Let me refresh your memory. Let’s see… two unfunded wars with non competitive contracts given to private companies (which happened to be connected to the VP) to supply US troops, millions of dollars given to Iraq which have disappeared, Medicaid Part B, tax cuts for the rich, subsidies to the multi-billion dollar international oil companies, and I’m sure I’ve missed a few other Bush give-aways.

          1. How about a $50B tax break to union controlled GM, No taxes for GE as Jeffrey Immelt is obama’s advisor, no end in sight for the wars, oil subsidies seem to still be in place, etc.  Your man has failed this country and his administration will be remembered as the most corrupt and racist in US history.

          2. The attempt to remove the oil subsidies was voted down in the US Senate the other day. Guess which party voted to keep them in place. Hint; it wasn’t the democrats. Attempts to eliminate tax breaks and subsidies have repeatedly been opposed by the republicans because it would hurt the “job creators”, while they are all for reducing any program that would help the poor and middle class. Attempts to prevent the banks and other financial institutions from repeating the greed that led to this recession are also repeatedly blocked by the republicans.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are being ended, although not as fast as most would like.

      2. Reccesions and Depressions are caused by artificial economic conditions that cause poor spending, and investment choices. Over time this “builds up” leading to a collapse.

In modern times these conditions are typically created by the government through poor monetary policy, and other laws and mandates.

Deficit spending was not the cause of the recession, and Obamas spending is not pulling us out of it.

When Obama spends nearly twice of what the government is making in revenues he has to borrow that money. A majority of that money is “borrowed” from the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve gets their money from printing it, as you may know, printing money inflates currency. When our currency starts to become worth less relative to other currencies, it makes importing goods more expensive.  Which greatly influences the prices of EVERYTHING.

John Maynard Keynes stated that during economic troughs the government can increase spending to cover the decrease of the GDP. As a result, the economy will recover. As shown Obama has spent more than the decrease of the GDP yet it has made virtually no difference. This is the same thing that happened during the Great Depression, when Keynesian economics was first tried. It had little to no effect. The government cannot spend its way out of a recession, it is like shooting a freight train with a BB gun. It doesn’t work, it never has worked, and it never will work.

The best thing for the government to do is to have a friendly business environment, reasonable taxes, sound monetary policies, and a strong dollar. Obama is literally doing the exact opposite of that.

        1. There are many economists who will argue against that theory. While Americans are not happy with the speed of improvement in the US economy, when compared to most other countries which have a lower corporate tax, we are doing well.
Many economists have argued that Roosevelt would have been able to end the depression/recession of the 1930s sooner if the republicans at that time had backed his programs more. It was the massive government spending during WWII which eventually ended the depression and led to the economic boom of the 1950s-60s, in part due to the nearly 100% employment, including women in the work force.

          1. It wasn’t the spending during WWII in itself. Nearly all resources that this country had were put into the war effort, that with low unemployment and years of no one being able to spend their money led to massive economic growth once the war was over and everyone was free to spend.

If everyone saved their money for years, and then all of a sudden started spending again you would produce a similar result.

          2. There was also the GI bill, which allowed returning service men and women to buy/build new homes with loans from the feds. I know because my parents were able to buy the house (with an $8000 loan!!) I now live in. It gave a huge boost to virtually every aspect of the economy. Those were the good old days.

          3. There aer also just as many that will argue against your theory, so what does that solve, but that fact know one knows who is right.

          4. Between you and me it doesn’t solve a lot, but now that opposing theories have been posted (in a civil manner) it might encourage others to do a little research and come to their own conclusions.

          1. I am stating Austrian School economic theory, which is even still very different from GOP economic theory. And I said nothing about taxes being to high or to low.

Corporate taxes, while they have been higher, they are currently the highest in the world. Corporate taxes used to make up a majority of the revenues for the Federal Government, now they do not. The rates are so high that as a result revenues have declined (think Laffer curve).

On another note, we more disproportionately tax the wealthy than any other country in the world. The big problem with that is that we rely to much on the wealthy for tax revenues. The income of the wealthy tends to be extremely volatile, this means that when we enter a recession the number of wealthy people often times gets cut in half. That means that the government loses 20%+ of their revenues for the duration of the recession.

You know there was a time in our history where we didn’t tax income at all? Wouldn’t that be nice….

  11. Must be nice to have money to just go and spend that much money to have dinner with someone who likely won’t remember you at the end of the day.

    1. And his abilities to capitalize, spell, and punctuate sentences correctly, Chuckles. Maybe someone you could learn something from?

      1. #Comment Police! get a real job; in stead off wastin you’re time critisizing every1’s posts…,,,,

Yes, I wrote that all wrong so that you would have something valid to argue about….

  12. Are the golf courses open in Portland yet? Or is Obama simply trying to pander to white people again?

    1. Really? She played the race card? Good now I know not to waste my breath, so to speak, on her.

  13. I think I know what the message is. The teleprompter wants another 4 years. TOTUS isnt going to get it, but its nice to know that at least someone working in the Oblamer regime is competent at their position. And I do believe it is the only one amonst the whole group. Barry has a big problem. The American people can remember what he said last week, so when he’s lied through his teeth to us we’ve known he was lying before he did. He’s currently losing to the generic Republican while whispering sweet nothings to the Russians about giving them the store and getting caught doing it. To use language Barry might actually  understand. He done.

    1. I don’t know what that means.  I pay my Central Maine Power bills monthly and have full electrical power here that enables me to turn on lights in my home.

        1. That must be it, Mr. Gallant.  Thanks for clearing that up for us.

And if you have any children, sir, permit me to say that I pray that they have not suffered extensively from your apparently default dismissiveness.  What a harsh world you must live in.

  14. Very nice speech in South Portland today!

My favorite was his dig against the GOP characterizing their rhetoric as madness.

  15. Addressed to those who think Obama is the brown skinned socialist non Christian giving away food and other aid to the poor; You’re thinking of Jesus Christ.

  16. Send Obana back to where he came from.  The ONLT TIME He Needs Maine is when he Needs votes! Our grandchildren will never be able to repay HIS Debt!  Sorry you bleeding Heart LIBERALS, but you can’t blme Bush for what thiw Jerk has Spent!!!!

  17. BDN? Why are you deleting comments? If I’ve broken rules– please explain! Meanwhile, Helena_Buckett trolls the thread with personal insults. Makes a lot of sense.

      1. GBB — Did you ever think that reporting on or naming facts that may contradict the conservative view does not necessarily make a news outlet liberal?

    1. Dont feel bad, they deleted some of mine too.  I noticed Helena_Buckett doing the same thing.  It has commented on a few of my comments with insults as well.

    2. BS — the “rules” that you claim not to understand are presented directly above each discussion board.  BDN/Disqus summarizes them as follows:

Keep it civil and stay on topic.
No vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.

People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked.

So by calling another poster “names,” as you’ve done, you violate the rules.

The BDN moderator has deleted some of my postings — okay.  You (and jlegere) say I insult you: well, you might find some of my reading into your comments insulting, but technically they were not insults. (Might come close, but I always aim never to break a rule.)  This is called finesse; this is called rhetorical prowess; this is called proofreading ones own writing prior to posting it in a public forum, where one’s comments are subject to public critique and response.  That’s all there is to it.

As for you calling me a “troll” and asserting here that I “troll” threads and insult people and some of my posts remain while yours are deleted — it sure does sound like when you were growing up, in your view there wasn’t enough of mommy’s love to go around.  BS, did you grow up in a large family?  Just wondering.

      1. Right, because assuming that because one does not use an apostrophe, he or she must live in a trailer is not a personal attack?! The majority of your comments on this thread have been incredibly rude, focused more on grammar than fact. There’s been at least six comments of that nature from you, which in MY opinion, makes you a troll. And I have two parents, one sibling. Again, your assumptions are ridiculous and ignorant.

        1. “Six comments” = plural. “There’s” is a contraction of “there” + “is” and thus refers to singular. Likely you meant “There’ve,” for “there have”:  “There HAVE been at least six comments” rather than “There IS been at least six comments…”

Additionally, BS, I have made no assumption, only posited a question here and there. I beg your pardon if I’ve cut too close to the bone for ya.

          1. You have waaaaay too much time on your hands. “There’s” can also mean “there HAS”, which fits the context of the sentence I wrote. Thanks for a good laugh!

  18. Elections  are paid for by  big business.  Who has 30,000.00  to give to the democratic committee.  not me.

  19. Should we the people have a recall for every person in congress an if so how long can they be in office before we can recall them 6 months, a year , 2 years  ??

  20. My husband and I attended the event at SMCC–what a thrill to see our President in person! We fully support him, and deplore the Republican leaders who keep trying to wreck this beautiful nation.

  21. You people who are infatuated with Obama are incredible. You have no vision of the future under socialist rule, you are uninformed, and you want one big happy world with no borders. Ain’t going to be rainbows and puppy dogs if he get’s elected again. You are his fools and you will be up to the point he has a truck backed up to your house…taking everything you own. Oh, sorry, that’s only if Obama care goes through and you don’t buy insurance.

  22. Bush and all of his republican cronies destroyed America, Obama is the only one on the ballot who is at least going to try to fix Americas problems. A vote for any republican is a vote for the rich to get richer and the rest of America to become even poorer than they are today. VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA, and he’ll continue his work on the devastating mess that the republicans left for him to clean up.

  23. preaching to the choir in Portland but the rest of the state turned red in the last election, like fitting a square peg in a round hole.,..

  24. I dare say that a real Mainer would not proclaim to be “manifestly” excited by anything…even if they could spell it and knew what it meant…She must be from away or she would know that she really was just “wicked wound up” about it.  I don’t know if Woolwich qualifies as Maine anyway…I do like those Woolwich jackets though…

  25. As we see by these posts that the followers of the right are still in denial of how we got into the great recession.
And again only blame for Obama.

  26. Given the Republican slate, I am surprised he is even bothering to campaign.  Oven Mitt couldn’t beat Charlie Manson. Let alone Obama.

      1. It will be a bitter defeat and the worst landslide the GOP aka (CornDogParty) has ever witnessed.

  27. What ever happened to “Ask not what your Govt can do for you, Ask what you can do for your Govt”

    Oh ya obama happened.

  28. I hear a lot of wing-dingers whistling past the GOP graveyard lately. Is it hope, delusion, or gold coin that keeps them posting ?

  29. Just more BS from the biggest BSer on the planet…I wonder if he was doing any whispering ?  I just cannot believe people actually fall for all his rhetoric!

    1.  How many times did he say “folks” last night?  You know, just to let us know he can identify with the less educated masses?

      1. He does not fool me for a second.  He is bringing this country to its knees and its being allowed.  yeah..he’s a real folksy guy!!!LOL

    2. ”  I just cannot believe people actually fall for all his rhetoric!”….Would be more applicable to Glen Beck or Rush Limbaugh

  30. What I do not understand is all these rich Mainers paying all this money to sit and have dinner with the president when our food pantries are empty.  Just seems so wrong.  They really are out of touch with how things really are.  So is he.

    1.  Mitt Romney is way more in touch than Obama with how things really are…NOT….If you look at the FACTS the country is starting to recover…Obama is the only choice for the common working man…It’s sad the the GOP has so many folks duped…..

        1.  Nope Mags, I’m not kidding. I’m just basing my opinions on facts and not the delusional rantings of Limbaugh, Beck, and Fox News. If you feel that Mitt Romney is in touch with how things really are, that is certainly your right….Peace

    1. “… in one week, Mr. Obama got caught whispering promises to our enemy,
incited a race war, raised serious questions about his understanding of
the Constitution, and then got smacked down over his proposed budget
that was so wildly reckless that even Democrats in Congress could not
support it.” – Charles Hurt, Washington Times

      1.  “Charles Hurt is an American conservative journalist, columnist and writer for The New York Post and The Washington Times. Curl also is a contributor to the Drudge Report, a news aggregation website.”

This guy is another clown like Hannity, Beck, or Limbaugh…Quoting Charles Hurt doesn’t mean crap…..Peace

        1.  Trouble is, Obama did all of those things. I just thought Hurt summed it up nicely. Peace.

          1. OK Don, I’ll try to explain this to ya……

“Mr. Obama got caught whispering promises to our enemy”…The Cold War is over and Russia is not considered an enemy.

“incited a race war”…The shooting of an unarmed teenager by a neighborhood watch wanna be cop is tragic. The President’s limited comments on this were far from inciting a race war.

” raised serious questions about his understanding of the Constitution”…President Obama was a constitutional scholar and the editor of the Harvard Law Review…My guess is he knows a little bit more about the constitution than Mr. Hurt…

In my opinion Mr. Hurt is a clown….Peace

      2.  Whats your point Don?  That you can’t think for yourself?  This mans election is a watershed event in American history. A coming of age in America.  Needless to say lots of folks have decided they don’t care for the implications of America once they get to live it for real.    He is a man his country, it people, and his race can take pride in.  On a political level I admire him for the enemies he has made. Have a nice wrathy day, I’m off the rest of the day:)

      3. Don, you know that the only thing you’re going to get from this is backlash….libs only consider quotes from MSNBC and NY Times as fact.

I agree with Mr. Hurt though….

  31. Just what Maine needs. Another 4 years of Chicago style politics ruining the, eh I mean running the country.

  32. I wonder why he couldn’t send us his Maine message from Washington? What these politician trips really are is a “get away from the desk” day. And they all do it. And the villiage idiots ran to the Portland Jetport to see him like he was a UFO. Like George Orwell said, “It’s the way of the world.”

  33. Elect the GOP for their “Moral Values”: War, Greed, Corruption, Dishonesty, Intolerance and Fear Mongering to name just a few…!!!… actually the GOP is upset that President Obama has led this country to gradual recovery despite their efforts to destroy any recovery…!!!

  34. So Obama is for the the poor and underprivileged right?  How many forked over 10,000 each for his fundraiser that was paid for by our taxes?  How many of the evil rich republicans do you think were in attendance?

It’s all about power and control; his vision is one where the all knowing and omnipresent government, and their “friends” make all of the decisions for the masses who are incapable of doing anything for themselves and can’t be trusted to take care of themselves.

Pardon me, but what a load of crap!  I want the opportunity to “pull myself up by my bootstraps”, I want “do it yourself economics”, I want to succeed or fail based on my efforts and my abilities.  I don’t want a government or appointed bureaucrat running (ruining) my life and dictating my choices for me.  I want to be free, I want my children to be free, I want you to be free.

In my opinion, that is what this election is really about.

  35. From Bloomberg Businessweek

One of the big questions in the economy right now is why job growth
has been stronger than economic growth suggests it should be. There are
several theories, which Peter Coy and I describe in our recent Bloomberg Businessweek article
on President Barack Obama’s stewardship of the economy. The best
scenario for the White House (and the country) is that the most popular
measure of economic growth—gross domestic product—is actually
understating things, and we’re in better shape than we realize.
That theory got a boost yesterday, when the Bureau of Economic Analysis released its revision
of an alternative measure—gross domestic income—that indicated the
economy grew at a robust pace of 4.4 percent in the fourth quarter last
year. That’s much faster than current GDP forecasts, which range from
about 2 percent to 2.5 percent. Why the difference? GDP and GDI rely on
different factors, so they can vary in the short term. But ultimately
they should reflect the same thing. As Bloomberg’s Alex Tanzi explains:
    For
a given quarter, the estimates of GDP and GDI may differ for a variety
of reasons, including the incorporation of largely independent source
data. However, over longer time spans, the estimates of GDP and GDI tend
to follow similar patterns of change.
There’s disagreement among economists about which is the better measure of growth. But as Morgan Housel of the Motley Fool points out,
there’s some strong evidence to suggest GDI provides a better gauge of
real-time economic growth. If so, the stronger jobs numbers may be
warranted—and may continue, despite worries by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and others that they won’t.
    “The
numbers [GDP and GDI] do tend to narrow as the data is revised,” says
Brent Moulton, associate director for National Economic Accounts at the
Bureau of Economic Analysis, “though not as much as perhaps we’d like.
One study does say GDP tends to revise toward GDI, and that would
suggest that the GDI number is certainly worth paying attention to.”
Further evidence of strengthening came in this morning’s consumer spending number for February,
which grew 0.8 percent and outpaced the estimates of most economists.
Of course, nothing is certain. But any evidence that the recovery is
    gaining speed is welcome news.

  36. it is sad to see so many Mainers support the facist thug from Kenya… turning your backs on the truth and drinking the kool aid of deceit will not cure the issues facing this once great nation… It’s beyond incredible that even a few could possible buy into this …….

    1. ” facist thug from Kenya”….The disrespect to this President is unprecedented…So far this fascist thug (I left the misspelling in your quote) has:

      A) Saved us from going into a 1930’s type of depression with the stimulus…Most economists will agree with this

      B) Saved the auto industry and all the jobs associated with it…

      C) Took out Bin Laden

There are more things but I just listed the “simple” ones for you….Peace

      1. Are you insane?
You can sell that to the sheep but please……

Obama via NDAA has kiled our constitutional rights. Fact.

He works for Goldman Sachs!! He did no such thing as saving us from depression!! He delusional can you get? Where is the accountability for the collapse??!! Where are the jailed banksters? Oh, they got raises, sorry. Yeah, Obama really held their feet to the fire….unbelievable….where do you get this stuff?

Bin laden? Sorry, not only was not responsible for 9/11 but he died ten years ago. The Hollywood bs story sold by Obama and his partners the corporate media is absurd.
        The proof is out there.

Please stop the Obama love affair. You will regret it. I garauntee.

        1.  The only thing I regret is reading your comments…Take off your tinfoil hat and join us here in the real world.

      2. Auto industry??? What are you talking about?

This guy has done nothing positive for this country!!!

He murdered American citizens with no due process!!! One a teenager!!!L come on

  37. For all the Obama haters ….. look at the bright side, you’ll all be part of the worst defeat the Republicans Party has ever suffered, it will go down in history has the single largest landslide in political history, Congrats.

    1. We’ll see you on November 7th when youre crying into your organic herbal latte and Oblamer is headed back to Kenya in his canoe.

      1. Ah … a nice delusion, going wrong with confidence does have its merits.
You think one of those clowns in primary circus will defeat
him, highly unlikely. The only chance the CornDogParty has, aka the
obstructionists is if you successfully obstruct our vote.

      2.  Why the Kenya thing from you wingnuts …always the Kenyan Muslim BS….Boy you people are just filled to the brim with hatred…I feel sorry for you….Peace

    2. You demonstrate the problem. Obama is doing a neo con job while convincing the country he is a liberal. And the sheep buy it. Even like it. But make no mistake. There is no such thing as a democrat and a republican. Only in name. It’s a circus controlled by elite banskters.
There is only the illusion of choice.

The sooner we stop playing the two party game the better.

We cannot stand any more name calling my parties better than yours non sense. We need to all grow up and acknowledge the corruption and deceipt.

There is a reason the founding fathers warned against political parties. Divide and conquer.

      1. there is a lot about Obama’s policies I don’t like, but compared to who the Republican’s are offering it’s an easy choice. Obama 2012.

        1. Yeah, Obama 2012, if you want more of this neo con war agenda and continued erosion of your civil liberties and the constitution, go ahead. But know that Obama is doing the same thing W did, only with more gusto. But call him liberal and the “left” buys it…amazing…truly amazing

Want real change? Vote for ronnpaul

I challenge you to watch the Obama deception on YouTube

          1. Face it Obama beat the right at their own game. By taking
right of center positions he has pushed the extreme wing even farther right,
pretty much right off the cliff making them look more like fascists then
Republicans. The only hope the extreme wing has is to obstruct votes which
they’re working “extremely” hard at. After the next two election cycles what is left of the Republican Party will need to be bagged and disposed of as toxic waste. The best part is they did it to themselves.

    1. Yes, unite and spread the word about how much of a lying hypocrite this banskter shill is.

While your at it spread the word that he has effectively killed our rights with NDAA.

      1. Great posts, but realize trying to reason with the un-reasonable will prove nothing. They understand only one thing ….. the bottom line, effect that and you’ll both be on the same page.

        1.  It just amazes me how they all fall in lockstep with Beck, Limbaugh, et al….Nothing but Lemmings…They quote them like it’s the gospel…I don’t care if they disagree with the President but the disrespect is uncalled for….Peace

  38. Please watch” The Obama Deception” on YouTube

And please stop supporting this bankster shill war mongering “liberal”.

  39. go back to Kenya..why are all your records sealed..you are a fraud…..you are not an American
    ….

  40. abilities to capitalize, spell, and punctuate sentences correctly- yes that’s a big help – when the ship of state goes down the libs are worried about the deck chairs

  41. So he preached to the 1% of the  1% with slush funds. I saw channel 6 interview of the brain dead who paid 5-30K$  to attend. One lady said it was the high point of her life, guess she must have a boring life LOL  Another Gay guy was bowing down to him and the talking points channel 6 showed was the same old non-sense.  Failed energy policy, failed economic policies and his failed socialist agenda. some one should have told him, hopey changey not worky !  Oh, he can take Air force one and go burn some more of our hard earned tax dollars for jet fuel, why cant he just use remote internet to preach to the choir, guess he isnt so green afterall@!

  42. Notice this contradiction:  President Obama says his Republican opponents want to “go back to the very same policies that got us into this mess in the first place.”  Senator Obama voted for the Bush stimulus package and the Bush bailout.  President Obama has given us MORE bailouts and a stimulus package that spent 5 times MORE than the one Bush gave us.  Increases in the debt was bad under Bush; under Obama it has been 4 times WORSE and still getting worse.  And all this happened when his own DEMOCRATS controlled BOTH houses of congress in the last 2 years of the Bush administration and the first 2 years of his.  Far more democrats voted for the Bush stimulus and bailout than Republicans – effectively no Republicans voted for Obama’s stimulus and bailouts.  Now that Republicans control ONE house of congress, no new bailouts or stimulus legislation has passed – something they get criticized for by … DEMOCRATS!  So he cannot accurately say he is or was the candidate of change; he is the candidate of taking bad policies and making them worse.  Voters who want change from the last 6 years on these issues will have to vote Republican.  No more BOBS! (Bush Obama Bailouts and Spending).

  43. I am so glad President Obama came to Maine! He is the only choice any reasonable person can make in November..If a Republican (As the Party exists now) gets into the White House, Maine will suffer tremendously!

  44. “Obama brings his re-election campaign message to Maine”

In short that message was “No matter what happens or who gets elected, get ready for another four years of disappointment”

  45. Four more years of his disgraceful lack of leadership on ALL policies and this country is doomed!

  46. Arrogance, Pusillanimity & Callowness — the defining flaws of a socialist iconoclast who has soiled America’s integrity on the home front and abroad.

  47. As usual the President talks a great game, but the reality is always much more harsh.  As someone who did not vote for the President, I truly wished him the best and like many thought he may have had what it takes to be a great leader.  I was wrong.  As someone who isn’t polarized to either the right or left I try to judge his accomplishments (and lack there of) objectively.  While there have been some (getting Bin Laden), there hasn’t been enough.  Especially when measured through the lens of the campaign of ’08.

High gas prices will most certainly derail any new growth that until now has recently been improving.  His energy policies are way off base, throwing good money after bad with bogus green energy projects.  Over zealous enviro regs are killing any opportunity for increased energy supply and job creation in that field.

I just wish President Obama the man, was the one we have as a President. I truly believe the President is an honorable and decent man.  However, his politics just don’t cut it for getting problems solved.  If his presidency was measured on rhetoric and “rock star” like persona he’d rank up there as one of the greatest.  Unfortunately for us, it is not.

  48. I’m glad he is gone from our state so we can get back to work, you know trying to make a living in this stinking economy, high gas, food, heating oil, and on and on. I know he is our president and all, but this guy just does not care about how the people of this country are getting by, he just does not care!!!

  49. On the other hand, if you worked hard to pull yourself up from your bootstraps, do you want to see someone handed everything and then some?  You worked hard just to get a slap in the face. There are two sides to everything.

  50. I’m willing to bet that 90% of the negative comments here are from someone associated with either MHPC or ALEC.

    1. Im sorry but Media Matters works for the leftists like you. We on the right dont need to manipulate the media by paying OWS metal-bits-in-the-face juvenile delinquents to post on message boards because we dont care. We know Oblamer is a goner after this election. But its ok..keep thinking that its all some sort of right-wing conspiracy. On November 7th you’ll get your wake-up call. Maybe save yourself an ativan and a sick-day for 11/7 because every Oblamer comrade is going to be very, very sad when the landslide comes down. Maybe if your lucky I’ll send out sympathy cards to everyone with an Obama/Biden self-imposed dunce cap on their cars bumper.
