BUCKSPORT – Madelyn “Maddy” Cole passed away March 26, 2012, at a Brewer health care facility after a brief illness. Maddy was born Feb. 15, 1935, in Bucksport, the daughter of Wilma “Bill” Cole.
Maddy was a lifelong resident of Bucksport, graduating from Bucksport High School in 1954, where she was active in volleyball, basketball and softball. Maddy continued her involvement with athletics by participating in local softball and bowling leagues well into her 60s. Maddy often spoke of the fond memories she had working at Pop Hills, Bucksport. Prior to her retirement, Maddy worked the early morning breakfast shift at McDonald’s, Bucksport, for more than 19 years, where she served coffee along with a side of her trademark wit and humor. Maddy was a proud Democrat, who loved her country and was one of the first troop greeters at Bangor International Airport after the end of the first Gulf War. As an active member of her community, Maddy volunteered to assist with the operation of local election polls for many years.
She attended and was active in the planning of her class reunions throughout the years as well. Ever social, Maddy preserved her many friendships with daily stops at her friends’ homes to have coffee and share her latest jokes. Often times, Maddy could be seen sharing conversation – and yes, her jokes – with many others that she encountered during her daily routine at the post office, local grocery and convenience stores, town office – the list is endless. Maddy was a caring person and quick to offer whatever support she could give to those she loved. She remembered birthdays and special occasions, acknowledging them with cards and often times a cake or her special peanut butter and marshmallow fudge.
For those fortunate enough, a poem or prose would be written especially for them.
Maddy is survived and will be sadly missed by her son, Joe Hills and his wife, Hildy; her grandson, Joey and great-granddaughter, Cadence, all of Bucksport; her stepdaughter, Debbie Navedo and grandchildren, Jarrett and Marissa, all of New Hampshire; several cousins and countless friends. She also leaves behind her cat, Lexi. She was predeceased by her mother, Wilma, who Maddy lovingly cared for until her death in 1999. The family thanks the staff of Brewer Rehabilitation Center for their care and compassion.
At Maddy’s request, there will be no funeral. A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
