WINDHAM, Maine — A Windham man was seriously injured Tuesday morning when the vehicle he was driving veered into the rear of a boom truck owned by FairPoint Communications, according to police.

James Callaghan, 47, was eastbound on Route 302 just before 11:30 a.m. when his Subaru Forester struck the boom truck, which was performing line operations, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Pallozzi, 49, a line worker for Fairpoint, was ejected from the boom truck and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the release.

Callaghan was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with severe injuries. His condition was unknown Wednesday morning, the release said. Pallozzi also was taken to Maine Medical Center and was treated and released.

The accident hindered traffic on Route 302 for several hours Tuesday.

  1. Sad story. Every time I’ve seen telephone guys working in those bucket lifts, they’re always secured by wearing a belt thats hooked right to the bucket. Hope everybody makes it out alright.

  2. I run a bucket truck (not phone or cable). When my work involves my truck taking up more than half of one lane on anything other than a secondary road (even on secondary roads if there are blind corners) , I’m required to have three signs on each end of the work zone and at least five traffic cones around the truck with flaggers directing traffic. I’ve passed phone & cable company work sites that many times don’t have work signs & most times only have one traffic cone next to their truck. I’m also required to have at least one sign on each end when I don’t require flaggers. (Not saying which if any of these things may have contributed to this accident.)
