Kristen Anderson of Leavitt High School in Turner will take her basketball talents out of state in 2013.
The Hornets’ dynamic junior guard has given a verbal commitment to continue her basketball career at the University of New Hampshire starting with the 2013-14 season.
Kristen Anderson is the younger sister of Courtney Anderson, who was a nonscholarship player at the University of Maine last season.
Anderson’s decision became public Thursday night with the help of a Tweet by younger brother Austin Anderson, who Tweeted, “S/O to my big SIS Congrats on your verbal to UNH! Can’t wait to see you and @CourtneyRohs play against each other!#gonnabegreat.”
The “shout out” was re-Tweeted by Courtney Anderson as well.
Kristen Anderson also had been recruited by UMaine and Vermont, among other schools. She would sign a National Letter of Intent to attend New Hampshire next November.
Kristen Anderson, a Bangor Daily News All-Maine second-team selection in 2011, is a prolific 3-point shooter who can connect from long range. This season, the 5-foot-7 guard averaged approximately 27 points, five rebounds, eight assists, four steals and two blocked shots for coach Tammy Anderson, who is her mother.
Kristen Anderson also surpassed 1,000 career points in January and eventually helped Leavitt advanced to the Western Maine Class B semifinals, where it lost to Lake Region of Bridgton.
Anderson continues a recent trend of Maine high school players choosing to leave the state to play in college. Niki Taylor of York and Kayla Burchill of Deering in Portland were freshmen at Vermont last season, while Alexa Coulombe of Catherine McAuley in Portland is headed to Boston College next season.

That’s ok, UMO needs game changers anyway. Now she can be closer to her boyfriend
“…is a prolific 3-point shooter who can connect from long range.” Really. What about the short range 3-pointers?
I don’t blame her going to NH, Maine should have thrown Ashleigh “shove-it” Roberts off the team (by Blodgett), and Maine would have better recruiting prospects.
it was her brother who tweeted it, you dingbat! UMO missed out here..she’s a hell of a shooter. Who says shooters can’t be game-changers, Cim, jr?
They already have a bunch of great 3 pt shooters!!!
UMaine women will have room for about one Maine recruit every two years as Coach Barron tries to restore the team’s lost glory. My pick for the next in-state recruit would have been Kristen Anderson, but that’s not to be. Is there another Maine candidate who can play the game at the D-1 level Barron hopes to achieve?
Incidentally, before the usual comments are made, it’s no disgrace to have a team that is mostly recruited from out-of-state. Take UConn, for example. For the past three years, it has had exactly one (1) team member from Connecticut (which has a much larger and more diverse population than Maine) and she rarely gets more than 5 minutes playing time. Because of its aggressive recruiting the UConn team is always a national contender.
