HOULTON, Maine — An employee at the Tourist Information Center who found $1,890 in a restroom at the facility was recognized by the Houlton Police Department on Friday for returning the money to its owner.

Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin said the incident took place Thursday, as Larry McGuire, 65, of Littleton, went to clean the restrooms at the facility.

After discovering that someone was in the men’s restroom, he cleaned the women’s bathroom first. When he returned to the men’s room, he found the envelope of cash, a checkbook, an address book and some note cards.

He notified Heidi Dolomont, another co-worker, who contacted the bank listed on the checks to try and obtain a phone number for the owner, Paul Bennett, 67, of Freeport. She also let the bank know that she had the checks.

Dolomont received a phone number and left a message on Bennett’s answering machine. Police also were contacted.

Bennett learned the money had been found and showed up at the Houlton police station about an hour later to retrieve his property. He told them he was going to write a letter to the Tourist Information Center thanking them for recovering his property.

McGuire was given a challenge coin, which is a token to recognize good citizenship, by police, Asselin said Friday.

  1. Mr. McGuire your honesty is admirable and so glad you were recognized for doing a great deed…..may you receive back in like kind…..

  2. I bought a firearm a few weeks ago at Van Raymonds.  Paid cash.  So the clerk thought I paid an extra $100.  I assured him I had not and said, “While I’d like another $100 off we already agreed to a price which I’m obligated to pay.”  We counted two more times to ensure is was the correct amount.

    1. There are honest people everywhere-they are just out numbered when you leave the “county.”

  3. Nice to see that there are still honest people out there. Great Job!!  On the other hand I think I would have gave the feller a little bonus for finding and returning the money along with a thank you note!!

  4. Yeahhhhh Larry, but he would have done nothing other than the right thing!!! He’s a super guy.

  5. Great story- but I hve to wonder why anyone would be traveling around with that much cash…

  6. Lost my purse some years ago and got it back, with everything still there.  I only had about $100 in cash, but I offered it to to the person returning it to me.   I reminded them that a dishonest person would have $100 now, so an honest person should be rewarded also.  They said no thank you.  You reap what you sow, and I believe good things will come to these honest people.
