NEWPORT, N.H. – Lillian K. Gokas, 81, died early Sunday morning, April 8, 2012, at Woodlawn Care Center. Lillian was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Claremont, N.H., daughter of the late Fayette and Ethel (Stafford) Kingsbury.
She grew up in Claremont, N.H., and went to Stevens High School. She married Arthur Charles Gokas and shared 52 years together at the time of his passing, Jan. 7, 2001. She was a member of St. Vasislios Greek Orthodox Church, the Philoptohos Society and taught Sunday school. Lillian enjoyed reading, was quite a good bowler and was an excellent swimmer. Lillian also had a very special love of her Bible study group. She worked as a payroll clerk for Sportwelt Shoe and was postmaster relief for the United States Postal Service in Goshen, N.H.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn G. Casey of Manchester, N.H.; her son, Charles Gokas and his wife, Lindy, of Dexter; three grandchildren, Tara and Chaz Gokas and Zachary Knox and his wife, Kim, and their children, Lucas and Shaun; two sisters-in-law, Evangeline and Arhontou Gokas of Newport, N.H.; and various cousins, nieces and nephews. Lillian was predeceased by her husband; a sister, Ruth Johnson; a brother, Daniel Kingsbury; and a son-in-law, Kevin J. Casey. Lillian was a devoted wife and mother and a kind and compassionate friend.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at St. Vasislios Greek Orthodox Church, Winter Street, Newport, N.H. Burial will be afterward at Pine Grove Cemetery. Father Leo Schese will officiate. Friends may call on the family 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main St., Newport, N.H.
