BANGOR – Myron “Mickey” George Strout, 80, went home to be with his Lord April 7, 2012. He was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Brewer, the son of Lester and Jennie (Giberson) Strout.
He lived in Bradford and graduated from Bradford High School in 1949. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Danforth to work as a cook for his brother-in-law’s wood operations until his service with the military. He served in the U.S. Army with the 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. After returning from Korea in 1953, he enrolled and graduated from Hanson’s Barber School, Lewiston. He owned and operated Mickey’s Barber Shop in Bangor until 1970, when he went to work at Georgia Pacific, Old Town, and remained there until his retirement in 1994. Mickey was a member of Bangor Baptist Church. He was
known by many for his love of music, especially the old hymns of the church, and was often heard singing or humming one of his favorites while working around the house. He was chaplain of the Bangor Camp of Gideons International
and enjoyed passing out service testaments to the troops coming through Bangor International Airport. Mickey loved playing golf and spent many happy winters in Florida with his wife and their good friends. He was an avid sports fan with a special affection for the Red Sox and college basketball. He was playfully competitive and enjoyed creating game strategy whether it be lawn croquet in his earlier years, or later on, playing Nerf darts with his grandkids. He loved having cookouts with his family in the summer and making lots of special memories at Christmas and other holidays.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Ann Schillinger; and a brother, Marshall Graham. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Shirley (Robbins) Strout of Bangor; son, Wayne and wife, Lori Jean, of Dover-Foxcroft; daughter, Lori Ann and husband, Chris Downs, of Brewer; and four precious grandchildren, Megan McNutt of Brewer, Zachary Austin of Bangor, Nicklaus and Kellen Jane Strout, both of Dover-Foxcroft. He was “big papa” to great-grandchildren, Isabella Grace and Connor Malcom McNutt of Brewer. He is also survived by a brother, Lester and wife, Betty, of Dover-Foxcroft. Additionally, he leaves behind a loving extended family and many special friends.
Visiting hours will be 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A celebration of his life will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at Bangor Baptist Church, 1476 Broadway, Bangor, with Pastor Jerry Mick officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the church after the service. For anyone who wishes to attend, a committal service will be held after the gathering at Williams Cemetery, Bradford. It was his wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bangor Camp of Gideons International, P.O. Box 134, Bangor, ME 04401 or a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements by Brookings-Smith.
