BANGOR – Mary C. Schultheis, 70, a retired municipal planner, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, following a battle with lymphoma. Mary, known by family members and close childhood friends as “Kibby,” was born May 19, 1941, in Bangor, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Mason) Carlisle.
She was a 1959 graduate of Bangor High School, and received an A.B. degree in comparative literature from Pembroke College in Brown University in 1963. Mary’s extensive professional life included employment in publishing and a long career in public administration. While living in the Washington, D.C., area, Mary held governmental positions with the CIA and U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1974 she moved with her husband, Bruce E. Schultheis, to Anchorage, Alaska. For more than 20 years, she worked in and consulted for municipal government agencies across the state, including city management positions for the remote Aleutian islands of St. George and Atka. Mary returned to Bangor in 1998 and became involved in the Bangor community, serving on the boards of Hudson Museum and Bangor Museum and History Center. She was a member of Bangor Women’s Investment Club, PEO-Maine Chapter B, and she particularly enjoyed participating in the P.E.O. knitting group. She also enjoyed travel and literature, and was ever ready for a good game of bridge.
Mary is survived by her children, Elizabeth Bradley and her husband, James, of Charlestown, Mass., and Robert Schultheis and his wife, Jaime, of Edmond, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Charles and Sawyer Schultheis and Logan Bradley. Also surviving are her brother, David Carlisle and his wife, Susan, of Bangor; aunts, Pauline Carlisle of Bangor and Margaret Speirs of Bangor and Fort Myers, Fla.; numerous cousins around the country; and nephews, Nicholas Carlisle and Jonathan Carlisle and his wife, Leigh, all of Boston, and Benjamin and Sarah Carlisle of Bangor. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Bruce; and a nephew, Christopher Carlisle.
A celebration of Mary’s life for family and friends will be held 4-6 p.m. Friday, April 13, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
