A couple’s RV caught fire while they were driving on I-95 near Bangor on Monday.

They left their home in Newburgh to drive to northern Maine when they noticed the smell of smoke while northbound on I-95, Hampden Deputy Fire Chief Jason Lundstrom said. The couple pulled off to the rest stop at mile marker 175.

The couple and their pets made it out of the vehicle safely, Lundstrom said. The camper was fully engulfed in flames when the fire department arrived, he said.

The fire may have started with a mechanical malfunction in the RV’s refrigerator, Lundstrom said.

No one was injured, he said.
