SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Edna Mary Baranello, 85, died April 10, 2012, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born May 6, 1926, in Southwest Harbor, daughter of Joseph L. and Marjorie A. (Hurd) Trask.

She attended Pemetic School, Southwest Harbor, and married John A. Baranello Sr. when she was a young woman. They lived in Cortland, N.Y., and later Connecticut. They had three children and after John’s death in 1971, Mary moved back to Southwest Harbor to help care for her parents and to be with her siblings. Mary was a fixture for many years at Gott’s Store. When she retired she enjoyed a lot of volunteer work including Meals for Me. She had been the official spokesperson for Norwood Cove Apartment Association and had been awarded for her many years of outstanding, unselfish and dedicated service to the elderly and low-income families in Southwest Harbor. She was also a member of American Legion Post No. 69, Southwest Harbor. Mary loved her family and friends, and always remembered with fond memories the picnics at Seawall, Manset.

She is survived by two sons, John A. Baranello Jr. and wife, Norann, of Lamoine, and Joseph Baranello of Rhode Island; a daughter, Mary Jo Halpin of Hancock; two sisters, Olive Bond and husband, Chick, and Peggy Walls and husband, Gene, all of Southwest Harbor; and seven grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by two brothers, Graham and Joseph Trask. Mary’s family expresses their loving thanks to everyone at Sonogee Rehabilitation & Living Center for taking such good care of her, and to Dr. Heniser and everyone at Mount Desert Island Hospital for their excellent care.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor, with the Rev. Vesta Kowalski officiating.
