BANGOR, Maine — A Howland woman was summoned for theft Thursday afternoon after police say she left a local department store with unpaid items.
Store security observed Katie Martin, 27, leave Kohl’s without paying for an Adidas jacket and some infant sleepwear, Bangor police Sgt. Garry Higgins said Friday morning.
Security escorted Martin back into the store and contacted police.
Martin was cooperative with authorities, the sergeant said, and was issued a summons for theft but not arrested. The jacket and infant sleepwear were returned.

The State of Maine should require students at some appropriate age level to visit a large retail store where they could be shown every facet of a large reatil operation including the security cameras and undercover theft prevention workers. In addition they could be introduced to the cash registers where you “pay.” A sort of “scared straight” experince-without the scary part. Parents could opt out if their kids are perfect. In this day and age kids might get more out of this field trip than we did touring the fire station.
But do we tell them that too many of these offenders receive a slap on the wrist, and get out to offend again?
Maybe a few less would get nailed for stealing, who knows?
