BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man broke both of his legs Tuesday evening in a fall from an observation deck at Kenduskeag Stream Park.
The injured man was identified as Ryan King, 35, Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber said Tuesday night.
After King was rescued by members of the Bangor Fire Department tactical rescue team, who were assisted by police, he was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where a nursing supervisor said he still was being evaluated Tuesday night.
Assistant Chief Rick Cheverie of the Bangor Fire Department said that King was standing on a concrete deck overlooking Kenduskeag Stream about 7 p.m. when he decided he wanted to get to a lower vantage point. King reportedly went under the railing surrounding the deck and then jumped.
Instead of landing where he planned to, however, King plunged to the stream, a distance of about 12 to 15 feet, Cheverie said. He said that King did not land in the stream but that rescuers were told by a person who was with King that part of his head went into the water.
Weber said that a police report by Officer James Decker, who was at the scene during the rescue, indicated that King appeared to be pinned between two large rocks when emergency rescue personnel arrived.
Cheverie said that because the spot King landed in was down a steep embankment, rescuers had to use a basket attached to ropes to help those who were carrying King get back up over the hill, where an ambulance was waiting.

I used to work with a Ryan King back in 2000 at MPBN I wonder if it’s the same guy? He too seemed a tad accident prone. Though I think the Ryan King I knew might be older than 35 now.
Another successful, and highly commendable life-saving rescue by our fire fighters. Bangor should be proud to have such a top professional team, ready to put their own lives at risk 24 hours a day, every day of the week.
A little recognition by the city council might be appropriate.
Sadly this avoidable accident tied up a lot of Bangor’s resources yesterday. When Bangor has to send an ambulance from Capital and their ladder truck to a rescue call you know you are stretched thin.
Not sure what his thinking was. However Im glad that he will be allright. A fall like that could have resulted in spinal or head injuries that would render permanent damage.
Sorry to hear that he fell bro. I wish him the best recovery. I will pray for him and you. Take good care of him.
Another top job from Mr Cheverie and Bangor FD – you guys are the best, proud and pleased to know you.
With kind regards from a retired UK National Park Ranger and ME and USA admirer.
He is very lucky all he did was break his legs, he could have been killed.
The poor man. Heal up fast Ryan.
Why was there no mention of the mystery man who jumped in and pulled him out of the water? I was on the other side of the river fishing w/my father, and seen a man, and what seemed to be his wife/girlfriend and daughter standing right near where he had fallen, and the man jumped into the river, and pulled Ryan out of the water, and held onto him until rescue workers arrived on scene. It seems like there is some of the actual story missing here. Yes, Bangor FD/Rescue did a great job when they arrived on scene, but I would like to throw out a big Thank You to whomever the gentleman was that grabbed him first, and actually saved his life.
