AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Gambling Control Board has approved a license for western Maine’s Oxford Casino, which is due to open in two months.
The board’s 4-0 vote on Tuesday removed one of the final obstacles to the casino.
Spokesman Scott Smith says casino operators are putting their focus on ensuring more than 350 full-time workers are hired and trained to ensure a smooth opening in early June.
The casino already has taken delivery of 500 slot machines, which are being installed. The Oxford Casino also plans to have 12 table games — craps, roulette, blackjack and poker — when it opens.

Now if we could just open a new Casino in Northern Maine – the MONEY DRAIN OF MAINE would be nearly complete. A recent news release showed that nearly 95% of the millions of dollars being spent in Bangor were from Maine. What did folks used to buy with those dollars?
Will you all stop whinning about what I/we do with out entainment dollar. I don’t tell you how to spend yours, stop whinning about how I spend mine!!! And by the way, I take home much more than I spend, thank you very much.
I knew that wind up someone, it’s you!
2 is plenty for Maine……no more
This “approval” is a perfect example of the concept of laws for some folks.
The origional law said SPECIFICALLY that casinos must be a certain distance from each other. The Oxford casino did not conform, so without moving either Oxford County or Bangor, this casino was approved anyway.
The distance requirement was placed in the bill to keep casinos OUT of Washington County. Does the approval of the one in Oxford now open the door to us too?
Note to Legislators;
Stop playing favorites. If gambling is now legal in Maine, make it legal in all of Maine subject only to a municipal vote. Any other way is unfair.
I dont know what your talking about….the law is 100 road miles from another exisiting facility. Washington County lost again in 2011 and thier bill reduced the milage to 90 which allowed them in. The 100 mile provision was put into law in 2003, was supported again in 2010 and finally clarifed by the Maine legiaslature last year. Maine people should determine casino expansion along with a local municipalty. There is not a casino jurisdiction in the world that only allows a muncipality control over how many casinos are allowed.
