STOCKHOLM, Maine — One of the individuals who burglarized and caused extensive damage to the Stockholm American Legion Post last year has been sentenced for his role in the incident.

Aroostook County Assistant District Attorney John Pluto said last week that the sentencing of Daniel Ouellette, 18, of Caribou will give Ouellette an opportunity to pay for the damage inflicted during the July 2011 incident and also to make amends in person.

Ouellette appeared in Aroostook County Superior Court in Houlton last month for sentencing.

According to Pluto, Ouellette pleaded guilty to Class C burglary, Class D theft,

Class E theft and Class D criminal mischief.

Two other adults and a juvenile were arrested in connection with the burglary: Steven Selander, 20, of Caribou; Daniel Ferranti, 21, of Caribou; and a 17-year-old boy. They were charged with burglary, theft, theft of firearms and criminal mischief.

Maine State Police apprehended the group at a mobile home park on Route 89 in Caribou. Three of the four attempted to elude police but soon were apprehended.

Significant damage was done to the Main Street building. A large amount of alcohol was stolen along with eight ceremonial rifles.

Ouellette was sentenced to 364 days in jail on the Class D theft charge, with all but 90 days suspended and probation for one year. He was given a deferred disposition on the burglary charge, to be served consecutive to the theft charge. That means if he stays out of trouble for two years, the burglary charge will be dismissed. He was fined $500 for the Class E theft charge and was sentenced to 60 days in jail for the criminal mischief charge, to be served concurrent with the Class D theft charge.

As part of his probation, Ouellette cannot use or possess alcohol and must submit to random search and testing for alcohol or drugs. He, along with any others convicted, must pay restitution of $6,668 to the American Legion. Ouellette also must do 200 hours of community service work and apologize to Legion members

Police recovered some of the alcohol that was stolen and recovered all of the ceremonial rifles.

  1. I thought we read about a young lady on here last week sentenced to a lengthy federal prison term for stealing guns? As a life member of the Legion, I find this lax sentence insulting. I guess since the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer, and revisionist history being taught in school these young men didn’t even have a clue  where and what they were stealing. The members of this Post should protest this in the strongest possible terms. The referral to “ceremonial rifles” discussed in the article is somewhat simplistic. Frankly, they are used when a hero is buried. Shame on these boys. They enjoy the life they have in the trailer park because people who are Legionnaires wrote a check at one time payable for the  amount of  up  to their lives for this nation.

  2. Since the moderator is very , very serious.  We need to understand why these poor, poor, teenagers behaved in such a disrespectful fashion. If a competent therapist can get these poor souls to get in touch with their feelings, this behavior will stop.
