BELFAST – Barbara “Pete” Moore Kuby died April 21, 2012, at Harbor Hill Health Care Facility, Belfast. She was born June 20, 1922, in Vancouver, Wash.
Her father, Maj. Gen. Bryant Moore, was a career military officer and superintendent and instructor at West Point. He and her mother, Margaret King, were born in Ellsworth, and her grandfather, Edward Moore owned a drugstore there. Pete’s ancestors lived for many generations in Maine. Pete spent her childhood in Washington state, Hawaii, Kansas, Illinois, New York and Georgia due to her father’s military service, but always returned to Maine in the summer. She graduated in 1943 from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. She met Lt. Andrew Ewing Kuby Jr. in New York City during World War II, and they were married March 24, 1945, on Governors Island, N.Y. They raised their three sons in Evanston, Ill., and Woodstock, in Bull Valley, Ill., before moving to Belfast in 1973. Pete and her husband, “Andy,” loved living in Belfast; they loved their many wonderful friends and the sense of community in Belfast. Pete was very active in Belfast Historical Society, Waldo County Hospital Aid, Friends of the Library and Belfast Garden Club. For many years she participated in the book reading program for young children at Peirce Elementary School. Pete was also an avid bridge player, gardener, golfer, reader and totally charming entertainer. Although her memory faded, she never lost her great sense of humor and timing.
Survivors include sons, Andrew E. Kuby III and Leslye Winslow of Riverwoods, Ill., Bryant Moore Kuby and Deborah Small of Belfast and Thomas Moore Kuby and Patrice McDonald of Ridgecrest, Calif.; grandchildren, Andrew Kuby IV, Caroline Kuby and Meredith Phillips; great-grandson, Alexander Kuby; sister, Margaret Wood, wife of the late William Wood, of Gladstone, Mo.; and cousin, Geary Tibbets of Belfast. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Ewing Kuby Jr.; and parents, Gen. Bryant and Margaret King Moore.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in June with announcement forthcoming. Interment of her ashes will be at Grove Cemetery, Belfast. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Online condolences may be offered to family at
