BANGOR, Maine — Four Republican candidates for U.S. Senate who took on some of the weightiest issues facing Maine and the nation Tuesday night showed little in the way of philosophical differences.
All four describe themselves as conservative. All four say they are opposed to same-sex marriage and, despite a few exceptions such as having to choose between an unborn child and its mother, abortion.
They also, for the most part, said they felt decisions about education, whether they involved public school, private schools, homeschooling or vouchers, were best left to students and their parents.
The four hopefuls who turned up — State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin, state Sen. Debra Plowman, small businessman Scott D’Amboise and Rick Bennett, a former state lawmaker now running a research firm — saved their tough talk for their closing statements.
Held at Bangor Baptist Church, Tuesday’s two-hour “Values Voter U.S. Senate Candidate Forum” was sponsored by the Christian Civic League of Maine, the Maine chapter of Concerned Women for America and Maine Right to Life. Each of those groups had a representative on hand to pose questions to the candidates who are seeking the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Olympia Snowe.
Plowman noted that she had been fighting to uphold conservative values for decades.
“I have walked the walk, talked the talk and kept the faith,” she said. “This is so trite-sounding until you do that day after day, every year, year after year, in the Maine State Legislature.”
While conservative Mainers have a large field of candidates to choose from, this year they need to support the candidate they feel has the best chance at beating former Gov. Angus King, who is seeking the Senate seat as an independent.
“It’s not a popularity contest, it’s a competence contest,” Plowman said. “It is so important to this state and to our nation. This seat could very well provide the majority in the U.S. Senate. So when you are looking at all of us, look again to see who will be the person most likely to win. I think I’m that person.”
D’Amboise focused on the fact he began running for the seat two years before Snowe announced she was stepping down.
“I had the courage, I had the conviction, to challenge a political giant in Senator Snowe and everybody said, ‘You’re crazy. You’re never going to win,’” he said. He said it is up to voters to decide “who the true conservative is. You’re going to hear that word spread around a lot. You’ve heard of the game show called ‘To Tell the Truth?’ It’s up to you to figure out who is telling the truth.
“Americanism is being lost in this country. Patriotism is being lost. It is not being taught to our youth. It needs to be taught in our homes. All problems can be solved by sitting at the dinner table and talking to your children. I try to do that. I love my country and I believe in a country where you have the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion and the freedom of entrepreneurship.”
Bennett chose to bring up an issue that wasn’t raised by panelists — gambling.
“In this state we have seen the pernicious, creeping growth and expansion of gambling across our state,” he said. “I raise this because many people of faith have talked to me about this issue because of the corrosive impact it has on our communities on individuals on families.
To that end, he said, he stood up against gambling in all forms as a state lawmaker, even when it made him one of most unpopular people in Oxford County, which like the rest of Maine has been struggling to create jobs and improve the regional economy.
“I just wanted to tell you that what you hear from me is the truth,” Bennett said. “I stood up at the Oxford town meeting when almost everyone around me was opposed to my point of view and told them why I thought this was the wrong choice for the people of Maine.”
Poliquin said he told his son Sam that being state treasurer was the easiest job he ever had: “All you do is tell the truth and do what’s right.”
Holding up a piece of molding from a Maine State Housing Authority project in Waterville, he said that he has fought to change rules that make little sense — such as the one requiring that costly white oak be used to replace more than 80-year-old trim which was going to be painted over anyway.
That and similar rules pushed the cost of each of the 34 units in that building to $292,000, he said, adding, “Now this is when we have about 6,500 families in homeless shelters or on waiting lists to get into low-income apartments.”
“I have a track record. I am the only conservative, true conservative, with a track record of fiscal reform,” he said. “We need somebody who thinks like us, who is conservative, to do the right thing, who is not a career politician and who can weather the criticism because this race could very well determine the balance of power in Washington.”
Charles Summers, who now is Maine’s secretary of state, was unable to participate because of a scheduling conflict but sent along a written statement that was read during the forum by Rep. Doug Damon, R-Bangor.
In addition to King, the other candidates for Snowe’s seat include Attorney General William Schneider, who is a Republican, and Democrats Matthew Dunlap, who is a former Secretary of State; state Sen. Cynthia Dill; Rep. Jon Hinck; and Portland home builder Ben Pollard.

Perhaps time to update your photo of Sen. Plowman. And please use one of Rick Bennett where he doesn’t look like Alec Baldwin:

You’re right, Gerald. The photo of Bennett is 10 years old at this point. Would have been a good chance to update our archives.

Sounds like repubs: Tweedle dee, dee, dee, DUMB!
Does Maine need a Senator who talks the talks and walks the walks but only has a high school education?
Oh…so only college educated people need apply to represent the people? I am amazed the founders of our nation didn’t include that along with being white, a landowner over 21, and a male.
Do you hold the same opinion of Mike Michaud?
Is that Bruce’s “Deer in the Headlights” look or simply the fear he had after getting lost in his taxpayer funded woodlot for the past four months?
Four great examples of hypocrites. Don’t ride home with these nuts cause they will lie to you again !!
This is a joke, right …RIGHT ??
” Poliquin said he told his son Sam that being state treasurer was the easiest job he ever had: “All you do is tell the truth and do what’s right.”
Unbelievable. This from the “Cojones ‘R Us” man himself. The very fact that he even appeared at the event shows how stupid he thinks voters are. Brucie, you are either overestimating yourself or underestimating us.
Somebody should let this group of misfits know that there is no chance any of them are going to be elected.
I really hope you’re right. A political debate forum in a church? Guess no one there believes in the separation between church and state.
Actually Bangorian I think Democrats and King better be worried about Bennett, Plowman and Bill Schneider all of which could give them fits in a General Election. You could have a scenario if King gets bogged down by his past in Augusta as Governor and his business dealings, along with getting into a battle with Democrats over the Liberal voting block. That Republicans sneak by like LePage did as Liberals put it. You could have that scenario. King is only popular with Liberal Democrats. I think you will find alot of folks including Democrats will be ready to pounce once on Angus’ record the Primary is over. I think if Republicans nominate one of those 3 . It will be between that Republican and King with the Dem finishing at least in third place.
Sen. Plowman told us that in order to graduate from medical school, a student has to perform an abortion:

Unreal. As is the candidate.
The trouble with practical jokes is that very often they get elected. ~Will Rogers
GeeWhizfolkes: Do not put down Debbie Plowman for having “only a high school education.” That is an insult to so many in politics who have common sense education that gives them much more intellect than too many of our “educated fools” in office now. But, her support of Steve Abbott in the gubernatorial primary of 2010 sheds more light on her lack of conviction, since he was adamantly pro-abortion and pro-same sex rights.
Rick Bennett, a nice, charismatic person, has always been pro-abortion, so please do not indicate that he is on the same wavelength as others in the race. Charlie Summers and AG Schneider are pro-abortion, also, last I heard. It is more than saving the life of the mother for them. Bruce Poliquin is said to be pro-life.
Again, Scott D’Amboise had the “true grit” to challenge Senator Snowe before she dropped out of the race, and he is true to his word in supporting pro-life and pro-traditional family issues.
L Scott D’Amboise Looks like a reject from a Godfather movie.
Panderers all. There remains nobody to vote for, including Anguish the King. All seek the benefits of largesse and security for the rest of their lives. I only can hope that they are spending their own money on this fruitless exercise in pandering to the basest of Maine politics.
Can someone explain to me how Treasurer Poliquin is the most conservative in the race? He has donated to anti-gun groups in the past. I don’t believe that will go over well in Maine…
LePoliquin thinks because we have a hypocrite-in-chief at the Blaine House, he should follow suit.
Long live the King!!!
This was a good event. The candidates and the questioners were respectful and open. It is easy to hide on a website and throw insults, but these people stood up in public and answered questions on issues most candidates are afraid of. Kudos to the candidates and to the sponsors.
Most enlightened people would be ashamed to be in the same room with them.
Actually I disagree. Most Mainers wouldn’t want to be in the same room with the Leftist Democrats and Angus S. King Jr.. Mainers are fed up with these folks messing up our state for the last 40 years. Mainers want change from the policies that have failed our state and now are doing damage to our country thanks to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid cartel.
I’ll have the entire forum online in a couple hours.
I hope its an unedited version. Not a version that edits out the main parts of the forum and is replaced by Socialist Propaganda and commentary that comes from your website.
You’ll love how I was able to use my animation skills to put a hammer and sickle in D’Amboise’s hands. And because he waves his hands around when he talks, I was able to make it look like he accidentally hacks off one of Bennett’s arms. Monty Python would be proud.
And what kind of propaganda will you put on?
At least I haven’t bought into the lies and other falsehoods that comes out of mouths of Democrats here in Maine. I haven’t drank the “kool-aid” and taken the stupid pills that Democrats give out. You think the way these folks talk Maine is a leader in everything that our economy is thriving. When in fact we have been living in our own depression for more than 40 years because of these folks. Democrats don’t like fiscal responsibility, tax relief and job creation. That is why they are known as the Welfare and Handout Party here in Maine , along with taking away people’s rights with the Nanny State that Maine had under Democrats.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…wake me when you’re done.
For those that were not able to attend, here are videos of the opening statements, all six questions and responses, and closing statements of the candidates that attended the “values” forum:
http://www.dirigoblue.com/2012/04/video-us-senate-candidate-values-forum/
The film clip on the news showed them in prayer at the beginning. Guess that’s admission cost of having the forum ina church. Actually, it resembles a religious “litmus test” (a re-litmus test?).
You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on. – George W. Bush
Neanderthals, all! Consider that this “forum” was held in a local conservative right-wing church. I’m all for “freedom FROM religion” and want it to have no say in politics at any level!

A better same sex marriage question to ask any Senatorial candidate is “given that the Pentagon has a standing order permitting military chaplains to marry same sex military couples stationed in locations and jurisdictions where ever it is legal, should those soldiers be discharged regardless of a record of combat bravery against enemies of the United States of America? These GOPs are not running for church council. They are running for a seat in US Senate which has oversight of federal foreign policy!
Bruce Poliquin said that same-sex marriage should be left to each state to decide:

Wow. What a bunch of bitter cynics! At least there were people who took the time out of their evenings to listen to the candidates…many people have no idea what any of the candidates stands for and just vote for whoever seems “nice.”
The ones who attended must all have had broken tellies. Watching the TeleTubbies would have been more informative.
Actually Democrats better be scared. Because they could have a good chance of finishing at best in 3rd place in November. Better yet worse than that if they nominate someone like Dill in the primary. I don’t think King is invincible either, if he gets his record brought up he could end up in trouble. His record as Governor was abysmal, with the 1.5 billion dollar shortfall he ended up with while leaving office. So I think the Republicans may actually could do well in this election depending who they nominate.
Anything to screw over worker . Now that bug business gets cheap workman comp did anyone get raises????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Nope. I wouldn’t hold my breath, either. Whatever expenses they reduce go directly into their own pockets and _crew the worker. Business as usual for the republicans.
No new ideas here. The hey also read the ALEC book too. Freedom is being taken away.
Hurray for Rick Bennet! I am a supporter already, but will write checks now. Gambling and the lottery are a tax on the stupid, and any society which funds itself on gambling and lotteries is a house of cards. The Bangor civic center is being built on future revenue from gambling and it will be ugly! Your newspaper would do well to do some investgation of the financial ruin resulting from families getting wiped out at Hollywood Casino. Bennet for Senate!
Only problem for Rick who I think is a great candidate . Rick will be in the minority on this issue because the Lottery (1973), and both Casinos were passed by voters in referendums. You also have at least anywhere from 4o % to 50% voting block on most Casino Referendums. He will not do well with voters who supported these referendums that would hurt in a General Election . He will be running against folks like Plowman who support Casinos , who will tap into that voting block . I agree the new arena even though Bangor needs it wasn’t the right proposal too small in my opinion not enough seating. But who would pay for it if the Casino wasn’t there. The taxpayer would have been on the hook for it. Maine needs more Casinos but it needs to be done right so everybody wins. Not done by voter referendums.
Will ANYONE who is political in any way, make Maine men and ladies happy? From reading the comments an the article, I hold doubts!
