OLD TOWN, Maine — An intoxicated man apparently thought he was at his house on Saturday and when he couldn’t get in, he decided to break in and was caught by the homeowner, Old Town police Sgt. Scott Casey said Monday.

Police were called at around 2:50 a.m. for “a report that someone was trying to gain entry through a window,” the sergeant said.

When Sgt. Mike Hashey arrived he found Derek Bowen, 22, sitting on the front steps and there was a hole in the screen, Casey said. Bowen lives on nearby Center Street.

“He was intoxicated and was at the wrong place and ended up breaking in,” the sergeant said.

The homeowners were awakened by Bowen’s attempts to gain entry into their home, Casey said.

Bowen was arrested and charged with felony burglary and criminal mischief. He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and later released, Casey said.

  1. Since the police knew this was a misunderstanding it is despicable that he was charged with a felony. The DA will throw this out and the police knew that…but this man will always have a felony arrest that shows up on employer background checks…who knows how many jobs he will not be able to obtain because of this.

The Old Town PD is out-of-control and has no regard for the long-term consequences that good people face from sloppy, lazy police work.

    1. Really, do you know if he had anything else on his record? And lets not hold anyone accountable for being so drunk that he had no idea where he was! Boy I love your logic! Not saying he’s a hardened criminal but it’s about time people are held accountable for there actions!

  2. Felony burglary ? I thought you had to steal something to get that charge. I could see criminal trespassing.  Not like the Oldtown PD never saw a drunk before.  I think we should polygraph  every Oldtown police office and ask them if they ever lied in court. if they fail fire them . I know for a fact at least one did .

  3. Alcohol needs to be taxed $1.00 per bottle of beer $5.00 for hard booze. all bar drinks $1.00 including draft beer. This way it can pay for all the people in Jail because of booze. If someone proposed this the lobbyist would have their nikes on in 3 seconds.

  4. It appears Mr. Bowen, in the police mug shot with the article thinks something is very funny.  Or was this a police photo from a previous arrest?  He does not appear to be drunk or having a hangover at the time this photo was taken.  I doubt he would be smiling (if this was the photo taken on April 25th) if the home owner whose house Bowen was trying to get into slugged him with a baseball bat across his mouth!
