BELFAST, Maine — A man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl two years ago was sentenced to 18 years in prison with all but 8 years suspended on Friday in Waldo County Superior Court.

Alfred Seekins, 50, of Dixmont, admitted to two counts of gross sexual assault, two counts of unlawful sexual contact and two counts of visual sexual aggression against a child. The visual sexual aggression charges were brought because Seekins performed a sexual act in front of the child, according to Waldo County Deputy District Attorney Eric Walker.

All but eight years of his sentence were suspended as part of a plea agreement that avoided having to have the now-8-year-old victim testify against Seekins, Walker said.

“Sometimes the best trial is one you don’t have,” Walker said. “I went into graphic detail of what she would testify to, if she had to testify. This girl has learning disabilities. Having her testify would have been difficult. I am absolutely thrilled we didn’t have to get her on the stand.”

Seekins, who had a close relationship with one of the girl’s family members, was first investigated by police in September 2010 when the victim reported the assaults to a police officer. He confessed to the crimes when interviewed by Det. Jason Bosco of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

The assaults occurred in both Brooks in Waldo County and Dixmont in Penobscot County, Walker said. Part of the plea deal was that the sentencing for all the crimes be held in Waldo County.

Seekins will not be allowed to have further contact with the victim, or with any children under 16, Walker said.

“He and his attorney argued he wanted to have contact with his other grandchildren,” Walker said.

But Justice Robert Murray ultimately decided against that, Walker said.

Once released from prison, Seekins also will have to attend and complete sex offender counseling to the satisfaction of his probation officer, will have to live where he is directed by his probation officer and have to register as a lifetime sex offender.

He will be on probation for four years after his release.

Walker said the girl has moved to a different part of the state, is living with family members and is doing “pretty well.” She was not present for the sentencing hearing.

  1. 8 years is not nearly enough. The original 18 years would not have been enough. I hope he enjoys “Big Bubba”.

  2. Thought it was a misprint.  Used to seeing 18 days as a sentence from our bleeding heart judges.  Should be 88 years, but this is stil more than 99% of other recent cases,

  3. As someone who spent a lot of time in jail years ago when I was younger for a lot of immature acts on my part, I can tell you one thing for certain, a guy like this wont last his entire eight years. I was always dumbfounded by the fact as bad as these guys I was in with were they have the most bitter of distaste for scum like this. Understandable of course. This guy will have a welcoming committee he will never forget, and “Bubba” is the least of his worries. I wish no luck to you Sir. Might just want to end it in your cell before transfer.

  4. He doesn’t look like he’s much of a dancer, but he’ll get better as soon as gets a “partner” in the pen.

  5. The way I read the article the child was one of his grandchildren. What screw is missing in his head, that would allow him to do such  revolting things, and won’t change with prison, counseling or whatever else  is thrown at him? These men should be shipped off to an island in the middle of shark infested waters to live.

    1. this is the ugly truth of child abuse.  the perpetrator is  usually a family member or close to the family.

      :(

  6. This disgusting animal only gets 8yrs??  I certainly would not have wanted that child to have to go through testifying against this miscreant but 8 yrs? Really?
