WOOLWICH, Maine — A loud exhaust pipe led to multiple charges against an Edgecomb man early Saturday, according to police.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Brett Strout said Jason Northrop, 34, is charged with operating under the influence, possession of a usable amount of marijuana and possession of an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle.

Strout said the stop on Route 1 about 1:10 a.m. Saturday resulted from a loud exhaust.

  1. When driving around in your party-mobile, the last thing you want to do is call attention to yourself. Maybe he was too under the weather to remember that….

    1. What’s the big deal if they report on a story like this. If you don’t like it don’t read it. Some of you people will pick BDN apart and complain just to complain.

  2. I wonder if the police will be enforcing the new laws regarding motorcycle noise/inspections?

    1.  I wonder if the police will be enforcing the old laws regarding junk mobiles, with loud mufflers/exhaust systems that should never have been  inspected  or failed inspection?

      1. What’s more annoying, and what do you see more often?
Motorcycles (sometimes many at a time) with loud, annoying exhausts, or junk cars/trucks (driven by mostly teens) with “modified” exhaust, which is still quieter than motorcycles?

        1. I see more junk cars/trucks, (just as many adults) with  modified exhaust, or no exhaust, year round.  Unlike motorcycles, which is  seasonal.  Or a car/truck radio with the bass up so loud it can vibrate my big, heavy, full size  SUV.

          1. I can honestly say i haven’t seen one in a long time.
The police have no problem pulling over a car with a loud exhaust.

But they almost never pull over a motorcycle with one.

quick question though: How does it make you feel when you hear one of those cars with the bass up loud? are you annoyed?

well, that’s how everyone feels about loud motorcycles.

          2.  Answer, am I annoyed?  Some days,   but not enough to speak for everyone.  And in the short amount of time that loud bass is near me,   I can put up with up.

    2. You know, people are constantly complaining about motorcycle noise.  I hear motorcycles and dump trucks going past my house every day.  Most of the dump trucks are as loud, if not louder, than any of the motorcycles I hear.  There are plenty of pepped-up trucks that the teenagers drive around in that are also comparably loud.

As for law enforcement enforcing the new laws?  Extremely doubtful as my cop friend told me just the other day that they will cite you for a loud exhaust ONLY if they have a reason to pull you over for another offense.   i.e. they aren’t just going to pull you over solely because your exhaust is loud.  I’m glad because I awfully want a louder exhaust for my bike!

      1. well, you see, the difference is that Dump trucks and big rigs driving past you means that people are working, those are vehicles that are productive.
I’ll gladly take a dump truck or 2 every now and then mostly during the daytime before i’d listen to a group of inconsiderate, annoying Harley riders.

“Extremely doubtful as my cop friend told me just the other day that they will cite you for a loud exhaust ONLY if they have a reason to pull you over for another offense.  ”

that cop should be fired for dereliction of duty, as he is not doing his job.

          1. right…
hate to break it to you, but they’re not that expensive.

and you do not deserve to be loud and seen, you should be quiet and considerate.

why do you need the attention?
“Look at me! I have mental issues and need the attention!”

          2.  You don’t need to break anything to me, some Harley’s are very affordable, some are not, depends on a persons wants and desires.

I guess the smiley face at the end wasn’t understood.   I am quiet and considerate, and I deserve what I want, without any need of attention.   If your intent is directed at me.

As far as your quote goes,  well,   you have right to your opinion  to think that way.

          3. It wasn’t directed at you,
It was a generalization of people.
            Let me rephrase:
If someone needs to have the attention garnered from having loud pipes, then there’s something mentally wrong with them.

  3. Jason Northrop, 34  ….. bet he still live some with his mommie  or daddie

‘jason, you are grounded the rest of the month! you go to bed at 6..and no playing with your little hot wheels cars either!!

    1. Doppler effect nullifies the “loud pipes saves lives” fallacy.   You should have learned this in your junior high/high school physics class.  A flashing headlamp is FAR FAR more effective.

        1. Can’t refute facts huh?
          no catchy comeback?
Are you going to present proof or statistics of your false claim?

    2.  If they cared about saving lives, why wear black? All about the image I suspect. Leather does come in more visible colors

    3. so why don’t we see all the rice rockets in accidents all the time?
      or mopeds?

I would surmise that loud pipes cause accidents because it is distracting, people look around for the source of the noise and therefore do not pay attention to the road.

People with loud pipes thrive on attention, regardless of if it’s negative attention or not.
Enjoy being the most disliked nuisance on the roads.
