PRESQUE ISLE — A Presque Isle man who was severely burned in what the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says was a fire in a methamphetamine lab surrendered to authorities over the weekend.
Darrell Crandall, MDEA division commander, said that Michael Carpine, 34, surrendered to MDEA agents on Saturday afternoon at a Presque Isle motel.
Carpine has been in Maine Medical Center in Portland since April 17, when the MDEA said that he was burned in an accidental fire created during the process of making methamphetamines.
Agents executed a search warrant at his Blake Street apartment the next day. Carpine was interviewed after the fire, but no charges were immediately filed.
Carpine was treated for severe burns to his hands and arms.
Crandall said in a statement that agents have collected a significant amount of evidence, including chemicals and equipment used to make methamphetamine and loaded handguns that were scattered in locations throughout the apartment.
Carpine is charged with aggravated trafficking in methamphetamine, a Class A crime. The offense is aggravated because of the firearms being used in furtherance of the drug crime.
MDEA agents have been in communication with Carpine since the incident and made arrangements to meet him in Presque Isle.
He posted bail and will make an initial appearance in Aroostook County Superior Court on July 19.

the reason is actually simple when you have these labs they the cookers needs lots of openspace like big farms , which the county is loaded with plus meth makes peope really paranoid so they like there privacy un fortunately the people cookng this stuff can make a huge problem because this stuff is so dangerous it can and does explode then firefighters go and if they arent told early on either are hurt by boobytraps or secondary explosions not good at all

Come on people. I know most meth users are low life idiots. I get it. The difference is this guy is a wicked decent guy that went down the wrong path and it’s not one he wanted to go down. He was crying for help and yet he didn’t think anyone cared, except there are a lot of people that do. I hope and pray for his recovery because he deserves that chance. And for the person that said he can’t read or for the people that think this guy sits home and collects a welfare check, he fits none of those descriptions. I know the picture above looks bad, but it really doesn’t portray the guy we all know. Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and look at the big picture instead of throwing mud in the face of those hurting like society has taught us to do.
