JONESPORT, Maine — A 47-year-old fisherman who severely injured his hand while hauling gear was safely taken by the Coast Guard to shore for medical attention Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England received a 911 request for assistance at 9:25 a.m. from the 41-foot vessel Sandy Rose, homeported in Beals Island, reporting that a crewmember had severely injured his hand.

A Coast Guard Station Jonesport 25-foot response boat crew reached the vessel about 10 a.m. about 12 miles south of Jonesport and safely transferred the fisherman to emergency medical services in Jonesport. From there the unnamed fisherman was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. No further information about his condition was given in the Coast Guard press release about the evacuation.

“Communication between the command center and station was quick and successful,” said Chief Petty Officer Rob Childress, the command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “Having proper radio equipment helped the distressed fishermen reach us so we could arrive on scene as quickly as possible.”

  1. What, not helicopter and 15 EMT”s on this one?? Someone was asleep at the communications center.

    1. sarcasm is a very nasty habit of insecure people…have a bit of feeling..someone was hurt…

      1.  I have a lot of sympathy for then they show up with overkill and they are all paid to do it, too. Makes little sense.

        1.  Just for the record not everyone who responded was paid for doing so. The Cutler Volunteer Fire Department are not paid when they respond to a fire or respond to walk 3 miles down a rugged trail to help someone.

  2. My thoughts and prayers are with this fisherman, his crew and his family.   I hope he recovers and is able to get back to wrk quickly.  Great Job to the Coast Gaurd and the crew on this boat!
