MILBRIDGE, Maine — Voters at a special town meeting Monday gave a second green light to tear down the existing town office building and an adjacent meeting hall and to replace them with a new structure that would house the town office, the Police Department, the public library and the ambulance service.

In an earlier referendum on the $578,000 project, 110 of 206 voters approved the project. On Monday, 188 votes were cast, with 132 voters in favor of plans to move ahead with the project.

A $258,000 community development block grant for the project has been approved by the state’s Office of Economic Development. The town plans to put up an additional $320,000, with $160,000 coming from a 15-year loan, $65,000 from the library’s endowment fund, $60,000 from surplus funds and $35,000 from a building reserve fund.

Construction of the new building, which is now being designed, is scheduled to begin midsummer, with completion projected for December.
