BANGOR, Maine — Fans who wouldn’t stop believing that Journey would eventually play Bangor will be able to welcome the enduring and iconic San Francisco quintet with open arms Friday, Sept. 28.
The Waterfront Pavilion will host the ’80s supergroup along with fellow ’80s powerhouse performers Pat Benatar — who recently played her first date in Maine in 24 years with husband and lead guitarist Neil Giraldo — and Loverboy.
Together, the three acts account for one diamond, 14 multiplatinum, seven platinum and six gold albums; 46 Billboard Top 40 and nine Billboard Top 10 singles. Surprisingly, none of them have a No. 1 single to their credit.
This isn’t the first time Loverboy and Journey have toured together as the five-man Canadian hard and pop rock band opened for Journey during a 1981 tour.
Tickets, which will go on sale Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m., are available by phone at 800-745-3000, online at www.waterfrontconcerts.com, at all Ticketmaster outlets, and in Brewer at Mark’s Music store at 203 Penobscot Square. Ticket prices, not including applicable fees, are $31.50, $61.50, $81.50, $101.50 and $111.50.
Journey has shown a lot of resilience since its formation in 1973. Last year, the band toured extensively to promote “Eclipse,” its 14th studio album, which peaked on the Billboard 200 album chart at No. 13.
Journey’s current lineup includes original members Neal Schon on lead guitar; Jonathan Cain on rhythm guitar and keyboards; and Ross Valory on bass. This is Filipino lead singer Arnel Pineda’s fourth year with the band, which also features drummer Deen Castronovo.
Loverboy’s lineup includes founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson and Matt Frenette and newer addition Ken Sinnaeve.
Journey’s most successful single — “Open Arms” — peaked at No. 2 in 1982. “Don’t Stop Believin’” peaked at No. 9, but is the top-selling catalog track in the history of iTunes. “Who’s Crying Now” was the band’s second most successful single at No. 4 in 1981. The band’s top-selling album was 1981’s “Escape,” which was certified nine-times platinum, with more than 9 million copies sold.
The Brooklyn, New York-born Benatar and Giraldo are producing a new album, according to press releases, which should hit shelves next year. Born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Benatar has four Grammys and more than 30 million albums sold worldwide to her credit.
Benatar’s biggest hit single, “We Belong,” reached No. 5 on the U.S. charts in 1984. “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” perhaps her most popular single through the years, peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard charts.
Loverboy, which formed in 1979 out of Calgary, Alberta, scored its biggest commercial success with its second album — quadruple platinum “Get Lucky” — and a single which hit No. 9 titled “Lovin’ Every Minute of It” from the 1985 album by the same name.
The Bangor stop will be one of the last on the tour, which is scheduled to start July 21 in San Bernadino, Calif., and continue through September.

Cool!
Waterfront Concerts = ATM for geriatric rock musicians.
Well at least you have your youth so the long drives to Mass and beyond for concerts shouldn’t bother you much. ;)
Good one! They all have mommy and daddy’s car, mommy and daddy’s cash, a whole lot of whining and bed head on the way to their Portland and MA concerts….kids are pansies now and poor on top of that. Not all jobs start at noon. Like Nugent, don’t want to go, don’t go….pretty simple stuff. That place will be packed full of us 1980s graduates…..you guys can go on YouTube and watch Bieber lip sync.
good stuff waynorth1
Pay very close attention to what is going to happen with Waterfront concerts in the near future…
Scarborough is now the desired venue in Maine and Bangor is now the “ol standby” you call very late at night when things don’t pan out just as you had planned at the bar. We were sold a bill of goods and the city bent over backwards to accommodate and now we’re going to be second fiddle.
who is Scarborough getting that is better than Bangor? Nobody yet….
I said the same thing a month ago. Scarbourough will get Kenney Chesney and we will get Slim Whitman
Hopefully Bangor will never have to listen to either one of them!!
Isn’t Slim dead? Or am I thinking of Narvel Felts? lol
Nope alive
This will be a great show. We will be there.
Thanks, Alex!
See you there tjones
Bangor, the burial ground of geezer rockers!!!!
We only buried the negs here. Bangor again gets a number one hottest tour band package. WFC 2012-beyond!
Music makes us young again!
ROCK N ROLL WILL NEVER DIE!! The fans who love these rockers ARE mostly baby boomers. Call them what you want but their AWESOME at what they do,them “geezer rockers” THis is the only city in MAINE that has a waterfront that is filled with excitement in the summer months. ROCK ON !!
ROCK ON !
Time warping back to the 80s. AWESOME!
Gosh, what a memory trip, the first concert I ever attended was Journey back in 1986. I would love to see the band, but I’m not shelling out hundreds of dollars to take my family- guess I’ll just listen to their songs really loud on my Ipod.
katherine- you only live once. prices start at 31.50 so really there is no excuse to miss this amazing night.
It just keeps getting better all the time. Great bands!
Wouldn’t it be nice if we Mainers could just afford to buy the tickets .
we can.. I sold my mule… :)
A guy with a Depends booth could make a fortune here.
Don’t stop believing…What a terrible song. How many times have you gone to a bar and seen a group of obese women dancing and screaming to this song at the top of their lungs?
I haven’t but I bet it’s amusing!
So you knocking the song or overweight women? Rather rude. I can think of many more horrible songs I think should be banned from being played in public like Mony Mony and The Chicken Dance. Sorry to disappoint you but you’ll have to accept the fact that there will always be those pesky chubbies daring to have a good time….
Rn- good stuff. I call these types Pdiddys. They are young, don’t know music, and want only P Diddy to come… ha ha ha. I had to…
google what dudley moore said about fat women in “best defense” funny.
I’ve never experienced that but I am getting an image of you sitting on your bar stool crying in your beer because they all rejected you, no doubt. BTW…don’t you have a big enough pair to leave an atmosphere you find uncomfortable or undesirable? In my book, we call such a “man” a wimp.
Wow, I didn’t even know they were still “touring.” If this summer is a hint of whats to come when the new auditorium is completed, I think we are in trouble. All I can say is if we are trying to get the attention of the baby boomer, they better be buying the tickets out. It will be interesting if these Social Security-collecting artists sell out by the concert date. If they don’t, let’s find something appealing to the other crowds. I haven’t seen a newer WTOS-type band on the docket yet (and the ones who have played here over and over don’t count). It’s the oldies and countries this summer – bummer. And I thought I wasn’t going to have to go to Portland this year…crap.
Where did you get your musical taste goodcitizen? I hope 73 wasn’t your birthdate. It has got to be ’93. The tours that are hitting Bangor are some of the hottest tours this season. So, that means they are playing the nation as top bills. Give WFC the credit, not the whimper of someone who has a musical taste of one band. The supergroups of yesteryear were the bands that played actual music. Not the smaller, inexperienced bands on the market of recent. This is the summer of feeling young, in love, and remembering that life is a party. Enjoy. Bangor is getting a huge dose of variety.
I would like to see Rush in Bangor. Just got tix for Manchester and Boston. If Alex could pull that one off it would be unbelievable.
to say the least!!! Rush would be awesome in Bangor
Other than Godsmack or Theory (which is who we get to see enough), I prefer the rock bands that have put out an album in the last 10-20 years – that’s all. We all have different choices of music – I am not the 80s band and country so much, but do listen to all of it. Because I prefer something else doesn’t mean your choices are better – I thought this was a forum for opinions – my bad. And yes, being almost 40, I want to hear some Pop Evil (Portland) 3 Doors Down (portland) Disturbed (Portland) Saving Abel (never showed) Nickelback (Portland), Seether (Portland), Shinedown (whoops – Portland). I prefer not to keep going – you get the type. I can’t be the only Bangor citizen who likes these bands.
And I have given the WFC PLENTY of credit by going to many shows – got the 3-pack this year for the country trio (Hah!) – I just and interested in some current rock as well.
Smaller, inexperienced bands of today – please, someone back me up here, please!!!!!
I like a lot of those bands too. I’d go to see many of those acts in Bangor. Please keep in mind gc73 that you have to crawl before you can run. I think you’ll see more of those acts at some point. You have to remember that there are still many in Bangor that don’t support these shows at all. You know, the noise/language complainers and general negative nellies including (sadly) some of the newer council members etc. I say booooo to all of them!
Once the new arena is finished, I’ll bet you’ll see some of the great bands you mentioned in Bangor. At least I hope. I’ll be right there with you man!
Not many complaints overall. 15 per 45,000 I think was the number kicking around last season. The country can be louder, but no complaints. hmmm… Someone loves Reba!!! (great concert btw)
All the bands you named ARE good and I’d be beside myself to see Disturbed (missed in Portland) and Nickelback (have seen 2x). FYI, though not widely advertised, 2 of the bands in this article’s series released an album 5 yrs ago or less. Beside the fact that they’re all iconic bands people remember. I have been disappointed in the fact that lots of country artists have been booked because I don’t care for that genre at all. We won’t all be happy, I guess.
The country concerts are packed and that says it all. They are happy people too. :) Variety my friend. WFC has it. Does everyone? I do, so I get many concerts! (giggle).
And variety is great! But the first shows lining up were just country show after country show. I was getting worried! I like 90’s country–doesn’t make sense, but that’s what I like. Not the new stuff. I do have quite a variety of musical likes.
It was awesome – didn’t play “sickness” until the encore – I was peeved and thought they weren’t going to play it – place errupted. I myself have seen Nickelback 6 times – never gets old.
So jealous! There are very few songs that make me want to break things but that is definitely one of them!! Lolol
Most all the bands coming have put out albums in recent years as well as new albums coming up (Pat Benetar next season). Portland’s concerts are mostly small venue type concerts, except for the Civic Center. Bangor is getting the supergroups that are still gracing our stages across the world. Also, the hottest tours, the biggest country stars, the best of the best in variety. No, it’s not all geared to the young. It’s geared to every genre, every taste. Portland’s smaller venues are geared more towards the younger teen/adult fan. But, what’s happening in Bangor is class. I hope to see you at Rascall Flatts, Urban, Aldean. Truly hope you have a great time. And yes, I hope Waterfront Concerts can please you more in the future. ;)
Oh, btw. Smaller, meaning how widespread the fanbase; inexperienced, meaning they have not done a zillion concerts and won the Stanley Cup!! What sells out a place like the Cumberland County Civic Center, or the Bangor Waterfront Pavilion compared to the smaller venues like the State Theatre, Port City, etc? NickelBack might have played smaller venues ten years ago, but now they would probably play BWP or CCCC or The Track.
don’t discount smaller inexperienced bands. sometimes you get a nice surprise. my wife and i went to a motley crue show in atlanta and the opener was some band called guns n roses. we thought “what the heck is guns n roses???” never know when the next big breakout band will pop up.
Not discounting it, just trying to educate the people discounting supergroups. :)
bye
Oh, are you sore because it’s an additional 2.5 hours to Portland and gas is way expensive up there – I would be more than happy to give you a ride if you can make it to Bangor.
Well, I won’t be seeing Journey, but I’m going to Def Leppard/Poison/Lita and the Happy Together Tour. I’m just glad there are ‘classic’ artists to choose from, because I don’t like modern pop or country much. Waterfront Concerts is definitely awesome!
Happy Together Tour is going to be a great show that’s not to be missed. I call these types of shows ‘once in a million’. Do you miss out on these types of shows? Hell no!

Still blows my mind listening to their new lead singer, who sounds exactly like Steve Perry. Poor to rich in record time. Good gig, Alex. Loved it when The Sopranos ended with “Don’t Stop Believin.”
ah, the good ol’ moldy oldies.
Outstanding work WFC. This will be a great conclusion to an already epic season. For those who don’t know, this concert will lead in the FireBall Run, the exclusive race to finish in Bangor. Those cars will cruise into town after this epic concert the night before. Journey representing their journey across the landscape. Waterfront Concerts has done it again. Don’t stop believing…
This will be a GREAT show! I’ll be all over these tickets. Does anyone remember seeing Loverboy at the BA in July, 1982? It was sold out and at least 100 degrees inside. Nobody cared though as the show was insanely good. Nice job Alex!
I saw that show. Loverboy was ok. Huey Lewis and the News opened and they were fantastic.
We’ll see you there Steve63_10!
joe- come to the waterfront this season and feel young again. It’s the summer of love… These are the hottest tours in the nation right now. Feel good for Bangor… WFC 2012-beyond!
What is Journey without Steve Perry????? Not worth the price of a ticket! Will continue to listen to my “original” CD collection, thank you!
If you have not witnessed Arnel Pineda sing, you will be missing an amazing night. We have, and so has the rest of the world. Arnel will make you forget about Steve Perry. If you think i’m crazy, i’ll see you at the waterfront on Sept. 28th. I will buy your broken heart a drink. :) Get ready for a special night Bangor.
There will never be a replacement in my mind. His replacement IS good, but those are some big shoes to fill.
Not a replacement. A new beginning… Steve is not coming back, the show must go on. Journey was into their 11th hour trying to find a singer that could retain the sound that Journey had always had. They were truly ready to give up. They got that call, and Arnel was that replacement. It is an amazing story, which I believe his life story is coming out in a special film this fall. You really need to know the whole story, and how faith and fate came together to allow a broken Journey to continue… Give them the respect that they won… not lost. Sept 28th will be Bangor’s chance to witness this reincarnation Journey, born again almost. As we take a trip (journey) this summer with some of the biggest supergroups from an era when music was great and talent was outstanding, let yourself feel young again when things were bigger, not the assembly belt of artists that invade the airwaves today. Wanna take a ride? BWP 2012
I have heard him, and he is good. I am very open to change, but you gotta admit, some things just aren’t the same. I am happy Journey has been able to succeed with their new front man. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the show!!
WRONG! You obviously have not heard the new singer. He is tremendous.
He is good, but great? NO ! Steve Perry made Journey GREAT.
So did Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain (who sings some of their most memorable songs). They will both be there. I saw Journey at the Verizion Wireless Arena in Manchester a couple years ago. It was FANTASTIC! If you don’t go because of Perry not being there, you’ll be missing a great show! I hope you go….
then left..
—
Gadael- ‘could’ is the key word. He chose retirement for several reasons.
—
No Steve Perry, then you cant call them Journey. Call them, Make Believe Journey.
or van hagar.
Absolutely!!!
That’s what I said. Just not the same.
Between San Bernardino and Bangor, these 3 bands must be ready to fire their booking mgt.
Did Charlie approve the show’s?
As we speak I’m sure he is sifting through quotes from each band member from all 3 acts. You know, to make sure nobody said anything that wasn’t pc, err I mean too inflammatory.
There will be a competetion between the bands for the best looking 40 year old tatoo.
My $ on Pat…. ; )
JIt amazes me how many rude comments have been made regarding age. Perhaps those people are jealous of those “old people” who CAN afford to go listen to good music performed by musicians who didn’t just use drum machines & other pre-recorded garbage to create their tunes.
It will be interesting when those people get to be up in years & it’s their time to be older… For now they’ll just have to put up with LOTS of older more classy nice people who CAN afford to go listen to great music!Perhaps joechmoe
Its too bad I’ll never be alive to witness kids when they’re older reminiscing about how great the old music used to be while dubstep and Lil Wayne screech from their nursing home radios. Haha
imagine all the broken hips from bumpin and grindin.
Steve Perry’s voice was such an integral element of Journey. I just have no interest in seeing them without him. There’s just no sound like his. :(
Rn- Actually, it’s back. Don’t miss out…
How old are you? Because a lot of us going to these concerts aren’t even 40 yet. You must be a teen.
Hip hop is in Scarborough believe me I’d take Journey and Lover Boy over Wiz Khalifa and MacMiller but I have to take the teenagers to see this noise.Come September I just might have to treat myself.
Once in a million show… Hope you have a good time at The Track as well…
My biggest pet peeve…..negativity……guess what? Every day you’re getting older. Hopefully, no one talks about you like that when you’re 60. Grow up.
You need to wake up to what Bangor is and what it is becoming. I’m 25. I’m from Bangor. There is no incentive for anyone my age to live there. Without a youthful tax base ready to pick up the slack of retirements, and provide service sector jobs, Bangor is going to wither on the vine.
My wife and I sat down and had a serious conversation about what kind of extra money I would need to make in Bangor to make it a viable option. The number we came up with was $25,000. I would have to make an extra $25,000 in salary to move north, which is really like $30-$35,000 with CoLA. The reason? We asked ourselves the question “What the heck would we do in Bangor?”
We don’t gamble, so Hollywood Slots isn’t an option. The new arena is nice, but what sports team is going to play in it? Portland has the Sea Dogs, the Pirates, the Red Claws. The Bangor area has UMaine sports, which is nice, but they don’t play through the summer or as many dates as the Pirates do. Concerts, huuuuuge edge to Portland. The State Theater, Merrill Auditorium, Alive at 5, etc. all program to a younger audience. Not to mention, most acts at those venues are usually cheaper than the Waterfront in Bangor! Bangor has some great outdoor activities, but within 30 minutes of Portland you can kayak, hike, etc.
I understand this isn’t Waterfront Concerts’ fault. They are bringing in acts that the people in Bangor want. It should be a wake up call to the city- what are you doing to make yourself livable? The Folk Festival, Kahbang, stuff like that is all well and good, but what is happening the other 50 weeks of the year?
joeschmoe2…..you make a lot of sense and at 25, yup it’s going to be hard…..thankfully, at my ripe age of 46, I lived in the bubble, bought a house in Veazie back in the bubble for 85,000…..sold it for 105,000.00 after 8 years and two bedrooms at that. But Veazie was the tax low then, not sure about it now. I feel bad for anyone your age now. Trying to get ahead now is hard. Thankfully, for once, being old and stocking money away during the bubble will pay off in the end. At least you’re smart enough to look at your finances and plan for the future. Most 25 year olds aren’t even thinking like you do. Sounds like you’ll figure it out and good for you and your wife for not ignoring it. Waterfront Concerts is just a business trying to make a living, too. I applaud Alex for his continued efforts to bring something into Bangor for mere entertainment for those who want to attend. Subject: [bdn] Re: Bangor to welcome Journey, Pat Benatar and Loverboy with open arms
joe- relax man. you seem like you are having a heart attack. Go where you think you will be happy. It’s that simple. A lot of positive people here that are trying to change the landscape. That is all we are doing, and our reward? Change. It comes in the same footsteps we made years before. You will have to find your answer yourself. Yes, I am a Bangorian. No problems here. Sorry…
their hair may be white, but their money is still GREEN.
