GORHAM — Logan Carman and Dustin Stanton combined to allow one run on six hits as the University of Southern Maine defeated Plymouth State University 6-1 in the Little East Conference Championship game Sunday.
The Huskies (27-17) had advanced to the championship game after a 15-4 win over Rhode Island College on Saturday.
In Saturday’s game, John Carey and Matt Verrier knocked in four runs apiece to spark the Huskies. Each posted two singles and two runs scored. Troy Thibodeau had a double and two singles with an RBI. Nick Grady added three singles and an RBI.
Dean Grasso led the Anchormen (26-17) with a double and two singles.
In Sunday’s game, Southern Maine tallied three runs in the third and fourth innings en route to the win. Forrest Chadwick singled and drove in three runs. Thibodeau doubled and singled while Jake Glauser had an RBI double. Grady and Carey each chipped in with an RBI.
Luke Merrill hit a solo home run and a single for 20-22 Plymouth State.
Trinity wins title
At Hartford, Conn., Peter Burrows pitched a four-hit shutout with one walk and five strikeouts as Trinity College topped Bowdoin College 6-0 Sunday to earn its fifth NESCAC Championship title.
The Polar Bears (25-18) had advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 victory over Williams College on Saturday.
In Saturday’s game, Henry Van Zant combined with Christian Martin and Ian Edwards on a three-hitter for Bowdoin. Buddy Shea knocked in Oliver Can Zant for the first score of the game in the second inning.
Williams (17-21) tied things up in the fourth, before the Polar Bears regained the lead on an RBI double by Dan Findley the next inning. Jordan Edgett chipped in with two singles for Bowdoin.
In Sunday’s game, Adam Mossmann knocked in two of his three RBIs in the three-run sixth inning for the 32-9 Bantams. Alex Almeida doubled and singled with an RBI. Bryan Wolfe added an RBI double.
Edgett doubled for the Polar Bears.
Softball
Albany 2, Maine 0
At Boston, on Saturday, the University of Maine’s season came to an end as the University at Albany defeated the Black Bears 2-0 in an elimination game of the America East tournament.
Maine (17-30-1) was unable to capitalize on two leadoff walks and mustered just one hit.
Brittany MacFawn pitched a complete game for the Great Danes (36-14, AE 13-6), allowing two walks with eight strikeouts.
Albany got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Kylie Apostolina singled then came around to score on a wild throw to first. The Great Danes added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Vicky McFarland drove in pinch runner Christina Patrick from second on a single.
Ashley Kelley tossed a complete game for the Black Bears, giving up one earned run on six hits with two walks. Brynne Davis singled in the fifth inning.
SUNY Cortland 1, UNE 0
At Amherst, Mass. on Saturday, the State University of New York at Cortland scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, which was enough to defeat the University of New England of Biddeford in the Amherst Regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Nor’easters (27-14) were eliminated from the tournament with a 1-2 mark.
Lyndsay Rowell pitched five innings for the 40-9 Red Dragons, allowing three hits and no walks with six strikeouts, to earn the win.
Erin Grover, Megan Gauger and Maegen Johnson each singled for the Nor’easters. Kelly Reid tossed a complete game, giving up one run on eight hits.

Masters wins 1,500
At Manhattan, Kansas, Riley Masters of the University of Oklahoma captured the individual title in the 1,500 meters Sunday during the Big 12 outdoor championships.
The Bangor native and former University of Maine star was clocked in 3 minutes, 43.48 seconds, edging runner-up German Fernandez of Oklahoma State (3:43.70) and two others by 0.51 seconds.
The junior previously had qualified provisionally for the Olympic Trials with a personal best 3:41.80 at the Stanford Invitational.
Conner 2nd at IC4As
At Princeton, N.J., Corey Conner of the University of Maine finished second in the 3,000 meters Sunday, highlighting weekend performances by Black Bears at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Conner, a senior, was clocked 9 minutes, 24.14 seconds which was less than three seconds behind winner Linds Crevoiserat of Connecticut.
UMaine’s Justin Gagne, a senior from Biddeford, took fifth in the discus at 169 feet even, which is third best in school history. Gagne wound up 11th in the shot put (53-10 1/2).
UMaine’s Wilson Adams was eighth in the hammer throw (179-5) and Ethan Moore was 11th at 176-4. David Currier was 16th in Friday’s 10,000-meter run in 31:08.8 seconds.
Ali Fereshetian of Turner reached the semifinals of the 100 hurdles in 14.16. Freshman Robyn McFetters fouled on all four attempts in the women’s hammer throw.
