BRUNSWICK, Maine — One of the most difficult things Dr. Lawrence Losey encounters when urging reluctant parents about immunizing their children, ironically, is that the vaccines work too well.
Losey, who recently was named Maine’s first Childhood Immunization Champion by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, said some parents argue that the instances of diseases such as polio and meningitis are so rare the danger is negligible. Not true, said Losey.
“I have seen kids die from these things, quite literally,” he said.
In the 1980s, Losey had a young patient who was outside playing with friends on a Saturday morning, struck a fever at 3 p.m. and was dead by sunrise on Sunday. The culprit: meningitis.
Maine is one of 21 states in the nation that allows a “philosophical exemption” for parents unwilling to have their children vaccinated. Though nearly all parents in Maine allow the vaccination, Losey said he is troubled by the fact that the percentage of people using the philosophical exemption tripled between 2000 and 2010, from 0.5 percent to about 1.5 percent.
The actual numbers of exemptions were not available Monday.
In the early 1990s, Maine was in the top five states in the nation for its vaccination rates, but has slid to 31st since then.
Even though vaccination rates are high and instances of preventable contagious diseases is low, Losey said the danger is an illness traveling into the country from another part of the world where vaccination rates are much lower.
“The point on this is that vaccines just unquestionably are one of the most lifesaving measures we can have, ranking up there with sewer disposal and clean water,” he said. “We’re trying to get immunization rates in toddlers where they need to be. If you wait until age 5 or after, much of the risk [of diseases] is gone.”
Losey began his medical career as a pediatric resident at Maine Medical Center in Portland in 1979. In the 1990s, he spearheaded efforts to assess a fee to private insurance companies to help cover the cost of immunizations for Maine children. More recently, he became a founding member of the Maine Vaccine Board, which the Legislature created in 2010 after several years of development by Losey and others. Part of the result of their effort is that as of Jan. 1 of this year, all Maine children ages 18 and under are vaccinated at no cost to their parents, physicians or state government.
“Before that, I had to do what I call a wallet biopsy before I could administer vaccines,” he said. “It was a very difficult and cumbersome system.”
Losey, who has published dozens of articles on pediatrics and helped launch “Medical Minutes,” which airs regularly on Portland-area radio stations, estimates the cost of vaccinating a person from birth to age 18 is at least $2,600. The new immunization program depends on a fee assessed to insurance companies each month and allows the Maine Center for Disease Control to purchase vaccines en masse at an overall savings of about 25 percent, said Losey.
Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of the Maine CDC, praised Losey’s work.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Losey’s caliber championing the causes of Maine’s children,” she said in a press release. “His passion to ensure that all Maine children are properly protected against diseases is both admirable and inspiring.”
Randee Reynolds, interim president at Parkview Adventist Medical Center, echoed that sentiment.
“His energy and passion toward ensuring that all children in Maine are fully immunized has truly been inspirational, and he has served as an excellent leader and role model to us all,” said Reynolds.
U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe also piled on the praise.
“This tremendous accolade speaks volumes of his extraordinary work to ensure that children throughout Maine are protected from vaccine-preventable illnesses,” said Snowe in a press release. “Maine could not be more fortunate to have such an exceptional and dedicated individual working in the critical field of immunization.”
Losey said a challenge he faces on a regular basis regarding vaccines is perceptions among some that the vaccines have dangerous side effects. Those views are fueled by what he characterized as organizations appearing to be authoritative but that go against virtually every credible medical study that has been done on the subject.
Losey said his dream is for Maine to fully develop a computerized database that tracks every child’s vaccination schedule — a project already in the works. About 70 percent of vaccination records now are entered into a database known as IMPACT, but Losey said he hopes that rate will reach 100 percent soon.
Another dream he has is that every parent would agree to have their children vaccinated.
“There are several groups of vaccine-reluctant people, including people who don’t buy into any use of the medical care system,” he said. “Another reason is parents don’t want to see their dear, sweet little baby getting all those shots. That’s hard for some parents to see.”
There has been progress on that front as well. Losey said pharmaceutical companies have begun combining some vaccines into fewer shots. As for any harm vaccines may cause, Losey said none of them compares even remotely with the danger of a deadly disease.
“When it comes to vaccines, it’s more stressful to the immune system to walk into a meadow in June,” he said.

The pertussis vaccine is not permanent, but protects those at highest risk and provides “herd immunity” if a large enough percentage of the population is vaccinated. As rates of vaccination decline, outbreaks occur in the general population.

In the early 1950’s, when children only got two or three vaccines before school, infant mortality in the U.S. was number 3. Now that children get 50 before kindergarten, whe are at 47. Forty-seven. That is really, really bad. Horrible. But how strange that you just assume they have plunged. Babies in 46 other countries have a better chance of making it to their first birthday than a child born here. Infectious disease is down, but chronic conditions such as life threatening food allergies and asthma are at an all time high. Autism is epidemic. 1 in 50 boys are lost to us – their futures often very bleak. Parents such as myself witnessed the change from healthy and normal to sick and autistic following vaccination. But the people who run and profit from the vaccine industry deny culpability, and you buy it? I don’t. And the people who witnessed what happen to my son don’t either. They are scared. They should be. Because our so called health officials are only interested in maintaing the government program they work for, they are not trying to find out how to make vaccins safer, or why some kids are so severely harmed by them.

I don’t think my niece would agree with this. Her 13 month old son died recently, shortly after his 1 year vaccines. The cause of death was unknown, but his mother knows that something was wrong right after he was vaccinated. Over the past two decades our infant mortality rates have climbed. Take a stroll through an old cemetery. Count the tiny headstones with dates in months or single-digit years. Then ask yourself how you got the notion that kids were “healthier” before vaccines.
Look at data on the decline in infectious disease. For nearly all infectious diseases the death rates dropped approximately 90% BEFORE the vaccines were introduced. Vaccines are not the answer you think they were. In the 1960s, kids were MUCH healthier than they are today. Virtually all of the chronic illnesses that are exploding were RARE then.

Diseases like smallpox and polio were on their way to eradication thanks to cleaner water and overall better sanitation before the vaccines came out. The only cases of Polio in the US since 1979 were FROM the oral polio vaccine the CDC admitted so. You need to take off whatever you’re wearing that is blinding you and do some research.

Doctors know almost nothing about vaccine injury. Quiz them on any of the things we have posted here from public health sources, vaccine makers or even the merck manual on vaccine injury. They are not trained on it.
I once gave a presentation to a state health official on vaccine injury. He was a pediatrician. He had never even read the vaccine table and didn’t know the symptoms of vaccine encephalopathy caused by MMR or DTaP.

My best friend didn’t immunize her son until he started school. Then school scared she started just before 5 years old and started him late at 6 years old. She has a wonderful son, that now can no longer read and bounces his head off the couch. :-( He was normal until 5. The doctor just labeled him at 6 years old with autism. He flaps his hands like a bird as he runs around the house and no longer makes eye contact, hugs inappropriately, and got kicked out of school for hugging other children innappropriately. Now, she has a diagnosis, I don’t think they can kick him out for inappropriate contact with his classmates. All I know is her son that read better then my son, and talked normal and played normal; now is having major work done with him. Maybe it wasn’t his late vaccinations, maybe it was the air, water or steak. Time will tell.
I know my oldest daughter, had her vaccinations late at 7 months old her second set and she had a fever and seizures at that time they said, was normal for some children. After 3 hospitals and 5 years they were able to get her seizure disorder under control. She now has a learning disability, we do not know if she would’ve had that prior to the vaccinations. She doesn’t have autism nor does she have anything on that spectrum.
Association does not equal causation. Public policy and health care decisions can’t be based on anecdote. That’s why we have scientific studies, properly powered, with defined thresholds for significance.
It works out pretty good for Public Health Big Wigs and BigPharma. Anything bad that happens in conjuction with vaccinations are deemed “anecdotal”. Any good thing that happens is proof positive that vaccines have saved humanity.

No, the studies HAVEN’T been done. If you actually read the studies you’re talking about, or even just their conclusions, you will see that most of them have been unable to draw a conclusion. Why is that? Well, if you read the studies, you will find that they were exceptionally badly designed. Why were studies done that could not draw a conclusion? I don’t know about you, but it seems easy enough to me to design a study that WOULD be conclusive and that these studies were DELIBERATELY designed to be inconclusive, because if there WERE a conclusion it would be an embarrassing one. Other studies have been done since that draw CLEAR connections between autism and vaccines, but of course those are discounted. A 2008 study done by Gallagher and Goodwin suggested that in boys 1-9 years old who were given the triple series Hep B vaccine, the odds of them needing special education services were 8.63 TIMES GREATER than the unvaccinated boys’ odds. I say it’s time to do some more research.

Did you actually read the insert? It simply describes things that happened to kids who took the vaccine. Like drowning, So vaccines cause drowning? In fact, the rate of SIDS is LOWER in vaccinated children (0.8/1000 versus standard rate of 1.5/1000). There is no evidence of a causal relationship with any of the medical events in the insert except brachial neuritis and Guillian-Barre (very rare).

Some vaccines ARE associated with autoimmune disorders. Interestingly enough, those vaccines are things that kids don’t get in the normal course of life until they are old enough to experiment with drugs, sex, or get a job working in a hospital. Kids who have a relative with an autoimmune disorder are much more likely to develop autism than other kids, suggesting that on some level, autism is partly an autoimmune disorder itself. If you truly believe that jabbing kids with 36 live vaccines from their first day of life until they are 48 months old isn’t an assault to an immature immune system, why go right ahead and don’t ask questions. If, on the other hand, you think that’s too much, too soon, ask your doctor what kinds of things your kid is really likely to be exposed to that would actually do her serious harm, and act accordingly. Vaccination programs are not really designed to protect children. They are designed to protect the rest of us. I don’t happen to think that a child should have to take a jab for a lazy adult who can’t be bothered, just because that’s when the doctors are likely to have access. I’m not opposed to vaccination in general. I think kids need polio, whooping cough, diphtheria, meningitis and tetanus, and I believe that when they’re ready for school, they should probably get a measles shot, and mumps and rubella if they haven’t caught it. But there is NO way an infant needs Hepatitis B, which is given before the kid even leaves the hospital, and which can cause MS in later life. Kids don’t need chicken pox vaccine. Kids don’t need a lot of the crap that doctors have on their lists.
A child who doesn’t get the chickenpox vaccination can get chicken pox (you realize that, right!?). That puts them at risk of shingles in later life. If you think shingles is a minor problem, you could ask people like my husband–he got a patch on his back in his mid-30s. It lasted about a year, and it was pure agony if anything touched it–like a shirt, a breeze, water from the shower…
He and I both had chicken pox, having been born decades before the vaccination. The moment the anti-shingles vaccine was available we went to considerable trouble to get it, since 1) I didn’t want to get shingles and 2) the thought of getting it a second time horrified my husband.

This is true! The vaccines wear off and that person has no immunity. I had shingles twice. I caught it very early both times and I am fine. Its not a death sentence but getting chicken pox as an adult can be, its better to get the wild virus as a child.

Well, thank you for a reasonable argument. I don’t necessarily disagree with your objection to chickenpox and Hep B, although I strongly believe MMR is still worthwhile (there are a number of serious complications from these).
The debate is about what the government can/should mandate for herd immunity to protect the population in general. Chicken pox? Probably not. Hep B? Not in a baby (maybe a requirement to attend public high school?). We do indeed give these to infants out of convenience, but more so to help increase compliance. The new debate is the HPV vaccine. I don’t have a simple answer, but I will say if we allowed opt outs for “philosophical objections” when smallpox was still common, we’d be fighting it today.

I laughed when they wanted to give my newborns the Hep B too! No way, there is little to no chance of exposure until they are older, at which time I will do it. We may have actually MADE polio much more virulent than it otherwise would have been. Dr Wakefield is the doctor who had published the article the the Lancet (British version of the NE Journal of Medicine) that linked MMR and autism. He published the article in 1998. Since then The Lancet had retracted the article which had been had been debunked by other doctors. Dr Wakefield is now facing ethical and legal issues that he took a bribe from a law firm looking to sue the pharmaceutical company who manufactured the immunization. also immunizations are only 2% of a pharmaceutical company’s profit because most are only given once maybe, a booster every year. So most of the arguments against it are false and come from uneducated people.

I followed the link and read it. No causal relationship was established for any of these events, nor did they compare the observed incidence of these events in vaccinated individuals to the base rate in the population as a whole or in unvaccinated individuals.
That means that the list of possible adverse events is the same sort of comprehensive list you see in the packaging of many prescription or over-the-counter medications you might purchase. In general terms, anything from headache to death.
Ok Liz then you take the risk with your child same way they just linked asthma in children to tylenol which “they” claimed was safe. There was a casual link on the package insert of asthma as well but now it is 100% proven so Ill take my chances and wait it out with no vaccines and see who finishes at the end the healthiest

People do need to realize that just because we vaccinate our children does not mean that they will not catch diseases. I vaccinate my children but there is a huge misunderstanding among parents who think that “Oh, I have vaccinated so my child can not catch that”. HI Queen – I think you may have misread my post. The chance of catching the disease is less if immunized. I respect your decision for not immunizing as I hope you respect my decision to immunize. This certainly is a heated debate. We travel out of country a lot as well and so far have only caught the chicken pox – my daughter was not immunized at the time. I pray you stay well and we all live a healthy and long life against these awful bugs out there.
From what I have seen, I truly believe the sharp increase in autism is a combination of alot of crap being tossed in these infants systems all at once. Premie babies are more likely to develop it. They also get more medications and vaccinations very early, and more likely to be bottlefed. Think of the chemicals in this infant? Water in that formula has what in it? Tap water from local towns is laced with flouride and chlorine to make it safe to drink just for starters, not to mention what else is added for public safety or not. Some public water has been found to have numerous drugs in their water. Therefore, a 4lb baby now can leave the hospital, with his or her vaccinations, then given city water mixed with formula. Then more vaccinations, plus any medications baby is on. How much can a system take? Remember, hospitals didn’t used to release infants until they were 5lb, due to money, and overload, they go home now when the doctor releases them.
It’s not what’s added for public safety that bothers me (please, spare us a reawakening of the tired old fluoride non-controversy). Look at the huge corporations that make their profits by spewing toxins into our air, water, and food.

One would think this is common sense. Amazing that some people would do anything to avoid vacinating their children. I remember meeting a parent at one of daughter’s softball games, who was home schooling her children. No problem with that. I applaud these parents. I do feel at risk though if they’re playing sports alongside my own children, in town sports, and no vacination records are asked to be shown.
As far as autism goes, infant formula additives could just as easily be suspect, or pesticides for that matter. Who knows? :(

Vaccines don’t guarantee 100% immunity. They greatly reduce the risk. Some vaccines lose their strength over time too, and need to be redone. Nothing is 100% guarantee unless everyone participates in keeping their vaccines up to date. Even adults would be at risk if they’re vaccine is fading, and children who aren’t vaccinated are at risk from adults as well.
Anger issues much? For your information I have a son with adhd and a nephew with autism so I’m far from clueless. I grew up with people who had polio. One of the most terrifying diseases that can be avoided. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. And duh about boosters. I get titers done all the time. I mentioned the lessened effects after immunizations, in my original first paragraph. Anything else you feel compelled to shout about?
There’s just as much reason for me to believe that aditives in formula are suspect, radon, mercury, plastics leeching, than to be simple minded and blame one thing. Of course a weakened immune system is a risk and for that reason, there are warnings. Before there weren’t, we were all guinea pigs which doesn’t make me happy at all. I put off vaccines in hospital for almost a week until I read the fine print, but I decided the risk of disease was greater.
These are the risks involved in everything. Simply eating at a restaurant can give one a case of hep x these days. Some things can happen and we can’t control everything. I’d hate to have the guilt though of my own children living with polio. I’d also hate to have to know a vaccine caused my children health problems. Yes I’m fortunate to not have a child with autism and wonder, but I weighed the risks and was fortunate to not have severe issues after vaccines. My nephew still has to have vaccines but my brother and his wife will ask for alternatives when something strikes them as too high risk. My youngest nephew hasn’t had any problems thank God, because they inquired about the alternative vaccines that are for high risk situations when available.

And to Violet, something hard has never been too much for my child. I breastfed until my children showed signs that they wanted a cup. No giving my children unpasteurized milk from a cow. Nope. I also didn’t have rugs in their room, and used cloth diapers which I washed on my own, and my first child was born in 1990. I make my own natural soaps and cleaning products too. I wouldn’t let my children touch honey either while some thought I was crazy. I avoided flouride drops when I felt uncomfortable with them too. I used the highest quality water filters for anything that was ingested as well and didn’t even trust bottled waters unless I researched where they came from. How dare you assume and act all holier than thou. I’d mention the effects of such assumptions and accusations, but I’m sure you’ve heard about karma many times before.
When you’re growning your own vegatables, tell me, is the rain providing the water for the plants? The earth providing the soil? It’s easy to bash the parents who choose not to vaccinate their children. But look at the consistent increase of cases of Autism, and especially if you know a family struggling with an Autistic child, it is scary and parents are scared, they are just trying to protect their children. I too was concerned about the thimerosal in the vaccines and there were several that I had to pick up at the pharmacy myself and bring to the office because I wanted them all to be thimerosal free. I wasn’t convinced that it could be connected, but I knew there was a slight chance. Personally, I believe that in my lifetime it will proven that Autism is caused by the chemicals and preservatives in our food, whether it is during the gestational period or during infancy, who knows, But over the last 40 years the amount of non-food crap in our food has skyrocketed! I would LOOOOVE to see a study of all of the families in the United States that eat 100% organically, I would like to see the number of ADHD, Autism and other learning disabilities. Just out of curiosity.

And remember, if your doctor contradicts the package insert, tells you the vaccine is safe, cannot cause any of the disorders listed, and your child develops them… HE CANNOT BE SUED… He has complete liability protection.
The reason that there is SO much vaccine damage now is because there has not been a vaccine injury case in front of a jury in a quarter of a century. When you are harmed you have NO LEGAL RECOURSE so doctors can say anything they want to you to get you to buy a vaccine from them.

Yes, if something is a “known side effect” that DOES mean they all happen. And define “rare.” Maybe something is 1 in 1000 if you get one shot, but 1 in 100 if you get three in 6 months. Trouble is NO ONE KNOWS the prevalence because no one has done adequate safety testing. That right there is reason enough NOT to vaccinate with Hepatitis B — at least until the kids are teenagers and doing possibly risky behaviors.

plus Sensory Processing Disorder, PDD-NOS, GERD, and Kidney Disease. I don’t believe vaccines caused Neurological disorders in my children. They may however have been a contributor to other factors. I don’t believe in scaring parents to not vaccinate their children. Autism is not the worst condition that could happen to your child. Whether or not vaccines cause autism may never be known I have read no proof either way. It is the parents choice and no one should bash anyone either way we are all still parents. 4Susan4, Years ago I grew very weary of hearing people say “there is no evidenced that vaccines cause autism” so I started keeping a list of the studies that did show such evidence. The list is now up to 58 research papers. They are coming out almost monthly at this point, but mainstream media and medicine just ignore them. Because they can. There is no consequences to them for doing so.
Did BDN actually do a simidge of research, take two or three of these studies, like the ones from Harvard or Hopkins, and challenge Losey’s assertion that there is no evidence of harm? Nope. Just hit record on a machine and reprint whatever he says.

There is no scientific evidence that DTP caused encephalopathy or seizure disorders. In fact, studies have shown that the encephalopathy was caused by an underlying genetic disorder that had nothing to do with the vaccine.

I have personally known three children who have been severely and lifetime injured by vaccines personally and therefore have curbed all vaccines given to my children. Your pediatrician can special order Tetanus only provided your child is 7 years of age or older.
You don’t actually need a tetanus vaccine. For any injury that actually might have a danger of tetanus infection (and they are actually pretty rare for school-aged children), you can get a TIG shot at the hospital that will be effective in eliminating the possibility of tetanus infection. Do NOT let them give you the vaccine in the ER. It is useless in the timeframe you would need. It MUST be the TIG shot.

What a crock! It has been proven that 80-90% of the kids who contracted pertussis were fully vaccinated. When you are sitting with your vaccine injured baby in the NICU then you can tell me how “safe” vaccines are. It is a shame so many doctors are more interested in making money than actually caring for the health of their patients.
Dirst most doctors care alot for the patents under their care. Even if you catch an illness that you have been vaccinated, you have a less chance of dying from the diesise
Actually what works well is the natural immune system, designed beautifully to prevent foreign pathogens from passing into the body and halting those that do make it inside. The natural system starts with the skin first as a barrier and then, if broken, the system will kick in to produce the proper immune cells, attack the virus or bacteria, and more often than not leave the body with solid natural immunity agaisnt those pathogens. When they later try to attack again the body will recognize them quicker and be able to produce jsut the right immune cells designed specifically to attack those foreign bodies. Some pathogens such as influenza virus and bordetella bacteria are changing or attenuating at such a rapid pace the the immune system cannot alwys keep up…AND VACCINES CERTAINLY DO SO EITHER. While I had studied these things in college I made the mistake of not fully thinking them through when I had children. I vaccinated because my mom vaccinated me and because I was told I was doing the right thing by our doctor, but I did not read the package inserts to the vaccines the way I had read food labels or consumer guidelines. Now I know better and interestingly enough when I told our story of injury and suggested that others simply do research for themselves and take pictures and video and document their children’s responses I was immediately attacked and blocked from the media. Parents, do you really trust the drug industry with your child’s life?
Educate! Educate! Educate! This is what us mom’s should be doing because we are parents and we are supposed to protect and make mature legible decisions. Are we asking for the ingredients list? Are we asking questions? Can they sign something telling us if something should happen that they will take responsiblity? Hell No! They Won’t!
I feel like it is our job as parents to educate ourselves about vaccinations. If we do not know what is in the injection are we dong our job? Are we protecting our chilren? We need to educate ourselves and ask for the ingredients list and ask questions more than what they provide for us.
Yes doctors do talk about deaths from not being vaccinated but were these children/adults in ill health or not? If they were than thier odds of living were lessened also by other factors.
vaccines are causing a high rise in autism and seizure disorders and if you read the fine print the side effects are way more severe than the diease! i know for a fact that is dangerious because i have 2 children that recieved Dtap and had seizures with in a hour of recieving the vaccine and continued to suffer from seizure which delayed my children very badly to the point my youngest son was diagnosed as non verbal autism.
We get it. All of your kids are fine and you don’t give a care about ours, right? We are just crazy. And you mock and say unkind things, yet you sleep well at night with beautiful children tucked into their beds. You will never know our heartache and our sorrow from the loss of a child–death or a diagnosis of a damaged future. You will never have to fight the establishment to get them to listen to you. Do you know what it is like to have your child not be able to speak to you? And yet, you have the gall to make comments on our children’s life? You know nothing about what we have been through. So go on a diet.
We have the most aggressive vaccination schedule in the world, we have the highest rates of autism in the world and infant mortality ranks us number 34.

This article does not take into account the huge volume of information available today. The health of this nation’s children is worsening everyday even as the vaccine schedule is exploding. Ask yourself, if all this “preventive” care is so great, then why are kids sicker than ever? Almost 50% of children these days are dealing with chronic health conditions that were rare 40 years ago. Once you start asking yourself the questions and doing the REAL research (ALWAYS look to see who is paying for a particular study, and always look at what the study actually studied) to find the answers, you won’t vaccinate anymore, either. I understand that this doctor is trying to “protect” children, but the low rates of vaccination in Maine mean that those children are healthier overall than children in states that have higher rates. (Hint: look at New Jersey where many pharmaceutical companies are headquartered.)
All of these families that are screaming at the callous disregard of the medical establishment can’t be wrong. It doesn’t matter, unless it happens to you. Is there really a need to be so mean? A doctor should know better. Just listen to what we are saying, it may save your own child or grandchild. Once the damage is done, it is too late.
