ORONO and BREWER – Sylvia L. Wood, 88, much loved wife of Clifton E. Wood, passed away Tuesday evening, May 15, 2012, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. She was born March 21, 1924, in Norway, Maine, daughter of the late Marcia Grover Linscott and the late Clarence Linscott.

She was a 1941 graduate of Norway High School and early in her married life worked as an administrative assistant and medical receptionist. She was active in various community and church activities, and thoroughly loved gardening, baking, golf and travel. Sylvia married Clifton, in 1942, at the height of World War II and accompanied her husband during his varied assignments in Arizona, Texas, Colorado and New Jersey. In 1943, Clifton was sent to Hethel, England, as a second lieutenant with the 389th Army/Air Force Bomb Group and didn’t return until September 1945. Sylvia and Clifton lived in Brewer for more than 50 years, before moving to Orono in 2007.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 69 years, Clifton; and daughter, Patricia Wood Farley and son-in-law, David Farley, of Chocorua, N.H. She is also survived by grandson, Jeffery Farley and wife, Mary, and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Teresa and Margaret, all of Kirkland, Wash.; grandson, Jason Wood Farley and wife, Lori, and great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Samantha, of Cumberland, R.I.; and grandson, Jared Wood Farley and wife, Amanda, and great-granddaughter, Keighan, of Pascoag, R.I.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Brewer Chapel, Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at First United Methodist Church, 40 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Tracy Reeves officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at the church reception hall. Interment will be after the reception at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
