JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – William A. “Bill” Jones, 58, unexpectedly passed away May 3, 2012, at Geary Community Hospital. Bill was born March 22, 1954, in Bridgton, to parents, John and Joan Jones.
He graduated from Brewer High School, class of 1973, and was a member of Columbia Street Baptist Church, Bangor. Bill was a lifelong, devoted sports enthusiast. In October 1974, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served for 20 years at duty stations, which included the USS Forrestal CVA-59, the USS San Diego AFS-6, the USS Yorktown CG-48 and ended his active duty career at the DeCA Commissary N.S.G.A, Winter Harbor, retiring in October 1994. In summer 1995, Bill rejoined DeCA Commissary at Brunswick Naval Air Station and was employed until the announcement of their closing. Wanting to continue his dedicated service to the DeCA agency, Bill accepted a store manager position at DeCA Commissary, Fort Riley, Kan., in March 2010.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Kathy of Junction City, Kan.; daughter, Amanda Junkins and her husband, Corey, and grandchildren, Benjamin and Chloe, of Lisbon; son, Matthew of Lewiston; mother, Joan Jones of Auburn; sister, Elizabeth Briggs and husband, Kevin, of Holden; brother, Steve and wife, Jackie, of Bangor; niece, Jessica (Briggs) Brooks and her fiance, Justin Franck; nephews, Kristofer Briggs and Ryan Jones; great-niece and great-nephew, Kayla and Kolby Brooks; aunts, uncles and cousins. Bill was predeceased by his father, John Paul Jones.
A public memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at The Fortin Group, 217 Turner St., Auburn. Inurnment burial with military honors will be immediately after the service at Mount Auburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family are graciously requested to defray unexpected expenses. A savings account has been opened in the name of Kathy R. Jones at Bank of America. Donations may be given to any Bank of America branch.
