WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is using weekend gatherings of world leaders — dominated by discussion of European economic woes and Afghanistan — to solidify world resolve against development of an Iranian nuclear bomb and to encourage a more forceful response to worsening violence in Syria.
Obama will have the ear of key players on both issues during back-to-back G-8 and NATO summits. Discussion will be aimed directly and indirectly at Russia, a sometime protector of both Iran and Syria and the chief blockade to such U.S. goals as an arms embargo on Syria.
The gatherings come in the shadow of the eurozone debt crisis and plummeting public support for the war in Afghanistan. Political and economic chaos in Greece and Spain underscored just how fragile Europe’s economy remains after an eviscerating austerity regime. Germany’s finance minister predicted Friday that the crisis could last up to another two years.
Most of the leaders are part of overlapping international coalitions formed to address the Iranian nuclear problem and the newer crisis in Syria, where an estimated 9,000 people have died in more than a year of violence that arose from the pro-democracy Arab uprisings.
Arizona official: It’s ‘possible’ Obama won’t make ballot
WASHINGTON — In a revival of the controversy surrounding President Barack Obama’s Hawaii birth certificate, a state official in Arizona says it’s “possible” that he’ll hold Obama’s name off the Arizona ballot if Hawaii officials don’t send him confirmation that the president was born there.
Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett, a Republican who is exploring a 2014 race for governor, says he waded into the issue after receiving more than 1,200 emails from people requesting that he verify Obama’s birth in Hawaii before placing the president’s name on the 2012 ballot.
Ever since Obama ran for president in 2008, some critics known as “birthers” have suggested, without proof, that he was born in Kenya. The Constitution states that only natural-born citizens can be elected president or vice president.
In an effort to put the issue to rest, the Obama campaign in 2008 released a certificate of live birth from the Hawaii Health Department. The White House also posted a copy of the long-form version of his birth certificate last April. Doing so required the president to personally send a request to the Hawaii Department of Health. A White House official retrieved the certificate in person and copies of it were given to reporters and posted to the White House website.
Romney launches sunny ad in swing states
WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney on Friday launched his first general election ad with an appeal to four key swing states as he tried to set a positive tone while promising he’ll start working on “Day One” for tax cuts, changes in health care laws and approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
The ads, which don’t explain how those tax cuts would be paid for or how soon health care laws could change, are upbeat and statesmanlike — very much unlike the attack ads Romney supporters used during the primary campaign to crush opponents.
The ad was part of a new initiative by the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to woo voters in North Carolina, Virginia, Iowa and Ohio. Romney followed it up Friday with a 30-minute “tele-town hall” meeting with residents of those states.
Romney’s strategy counts particularly heavily on winning Virginia and North Carolina. President Barack Obama won those states in 2008, reversing years of Republican presidential victories.
Newborn infant dies after dog attack at Ohio home
LIMA, Ohio — An Ohio sheriff’s deputy says a 3-day-old infant died hours after she was attacked by a family dog while sitting in a swing.
Chief Deputy Jim Everett of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office in Lima says the baby girl suffered a head injury at her grandmother’s home near Beaverdam on Thursday.
Everett says the mother put the infant in the swing in to prepare to feed her and was a few feet away in the kitchen with the baby’s grandmother. He says they heard a whimper and found the infant injured.
They took her to a local hospital. She was flown to a Toledo hospital, where she died.
Everett says the dog appeared to be a pit bull and is in the dog warden’s custody.
Unemployment rate falls in two-thirds of US states
WASHINGTON — The unemployment rate fell in two-thirds of U.S. states last month, evidence that modest economic growth is boosting hiring in most areas of the country.
And in many states, unemployment has fallen well below the national average, which was 8.1 percent last month. The rate was under 7 percent in 22 states in April. That compares with only 13 states in April 2011.
The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate dropped in 37 states in April, the most in three months. Unemployment rose in five states and was unchanged in eight.
In Maine, unemployment was at 7.2 percent in April, unchanged from March, and down a half a percentage point from 7.7 in April 2011.
