SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Hannaford Supermarkets announced May 9 that the 12th annual Hannaford Helps Schools program raised more than $750,000 to benefit students in five states, including more than $240,000 in Maine.
In Maine, 690 schools received a total of $246,537 toward the purchase of needed items such as computers, sporting equipment and playground gear. Overall, the program raised $778,876 and contributed to more than 2,600 schools in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
The top five beneficiaries for Maine were:
• Buxton Center Elementary School, $2,326.
• Scarborough High School, $2,179.
• Greenville School Union, $2,101.
• Kennebunk High School, $1,918.
• Holden Elementary School, $1,897.
Hannaford customers generated donations for their local schools by purchasing participating products between Sept. 4 and Dec. 3, 2011. These customers received “school dollars” and deposited them in collection towers at their local Hannaford, where they directed the funds to the school of their choice.
In addition, each supermarket provided a $1,000 bonus to the school that generated the most donations in its area. The top fundraising school in Maine was Buxton Center Elementary School.
