AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s first lady is getting her hands dirty to teach students about healthy living and eating locally grown foods.

Ann LePage, the wife of Gov. Paul LePage, and Agriculture Commissioner Walt Whitcomb are meeting with 10 sixth-grade students from Augusta’s Farrington Elementary School on Wednesday at the Blaine House in Augusta.

Students will plant a batch of winter squash that will be donated to a local food pantry after it’s harvested. They will also sample snacks made with fresh vegetables prepared by Blaine House chef Chris Hart and chef and cookbook author Cynthia Symonds.

Whitcomb says having a hands-on opportunity to plant seeds and harvest vegetables teaches students about science, biology and good nutrition while generating a lifelong appreciation for eating local foods.

  1. I’m sure all the teachers, aids, bus drivers, custodians, cooks, etc. that are being put out of work throughout our state by the policies of her husband want to thank her for coming out and helping them give guidance to the next generation.

    1. What a bunch of Sour Grapes Comments from the Liberal Nuts this morning!  Maybe you didn’t get your “Happy Meal” this morning.

cicchino84:  “An obviously overweight woman is going to teach kids”…You must be referring to the FORMER First Lady.

  2. Did she make a special trip up from her home in Florida to do this, or was she coming anyway?

  3. As a constant LePage basher, I have to say I am amazed at the negativity being thrown at Ms. LePage for a commendable act.  I only wish that she would stress the value of “organic” as well as local.

To all the naysayers–Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally.

  4. She will be speaking of all the Florida Food that is locally grown in her home state.

  5.  Lepage sends his wife out to talk about locally grown food while at the same time he give’s $350,000 of our money to Canada to help them dump their illegally subsidized socialist potato’s on the US market.

  6. She may be a nice lady. I have not met her. This program appears to be just another churned out by the political machine to appease and appeal to the voters. If she were to travel this entire state frequently interacting as well as promoting healthy living and eating locally grown foods then I might just place some significance in her work and message. I have just seen too many “learn to read” politicians and their significant others that apparently can not themselves. This being especially true of their constituents very strong and clear messages overlooked consistently.

  7. A very innovative idea from 1st lady Ann. It would be good to see others follow her lead and try similar activities throughout the state. I don’t recall any Governor and family that has been so supportive of all Mainers.

  8. Bullying a lady……is that some sort of trait the enlightened crowd pass down or is it learned.

  9. Good Job Ann, on behalf of many of us proud Mainers, I am sorry for the horrible unfounded things that have been said about your Husband. “Until you walk a mile in a mans shoes….”. I am sure you two have reached the point where you laugh at the ignorance of many that cast stones but I am sure it took a little while to get there. We know you both are out there on the front lines trying to get this State back in fical responsibility in order to have something left for our children. I know Paul, I know how much he loves children, all children, and I know his passion and courage. He is doing a great job trying to educate the masses in Maine that change is needed in order to prosper once again as a State. Long term, the free ride has to be reduced.

Best wishes to all of you. Let’s get Paul another 4 years.
