BANGOR, Maine — A Husson University professor and left-handed bass player died Monday at his home in Surry of cardiac arrest.
Thomas W. Hutchison, 60, joined Husson’s College of Business in August 2010, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the school. In addition to teaching, he served as director of the School of Business and Management and as executive director of academic affairs.
“Tom’s warm personality, friendliness, and professionalism will be missed,” Ron Nykiel, dean of the College of Business, said in the press release.
“His last activity before his death was paddling Patten Bay, where he watched over a flock of newly hatched ducklings until their mother returned,” his obituary said.
Hutchison was responsible for the development of the university’s online MBA program and its MBA program at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, according to Husson’s press release.
Born in Texas, Hutchison grew up in Tallahassee, Fla., and began his career as a professional musician there, according to his obituary. He was a member of several bands, including the popular beach-music group the Eight of Us, and released six singles and an album as Hutch n’ Hoss with longtime musical partner Dick Hosford.
Hutchison previously taught in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University, where he was coordinator of the music business program, the music business internship program, the online music business program, and of marketing and recruitment for the department.
During his academic career, Hutchison wrote five textbooks on marketing in the entertainment industry, his obituary said. He also served as a consultant to RCA Records, the Country Music Association, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and Universal/MCA Records.
A memorial service is being planned, according to the Husson press release.
Hutchison is survived by his wife, Lynne Walker Hutchison of Surry, as well as family members, friends and colleagues.

I was one of his students and his Business of Music class was very interesting. I now know more of how the music industry is run thanks to him. I wanted to take another one of his classes, this is very unfortunate. My thoughts are with his family and friends, thank you for sharing such an amazing professor with New England School of Communications and Husson.
This news breaks my heart. I had Dr Hutchison at MTSU for a few classes. I have never forgotten his teachings and have always had a deep appreciation for all he shared with us. My career would not be where it is right now without this man.
