BANGOR and LUCERNE – Barbara M. Hughes, 82, passed peacefully June 1, 2012, surrounded by the most important part of her life – her children. She was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Orange, N.J., the daughter of John and Helen (Farrell) Yunck.

Barbara graduated from John Bapst High School and Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, crossword puzzles and most importantly, family gatherings at the lake. She was “mom” to more than just her kids.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Dr. Edward J. Hughes Jr. of Lucerne; four sons, Edward J. Hughes III and Colleen of Bangor, Stephen Hughes and Paula of Brewer, Jeffrey Hughes and Margaret of Hermon and Christopher Hughes and Kathleen of Clearwater, Fla.; five daughters, Suzanne and James Brooker of Veazie, Patricia and Donald Lynch of Bangor, Linda and Robert Murtaugh of Denver, Deborah and Scott Kenny of Holden and Karen Hughes of Bangor; her sister, Joan Harkins of Oakland, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Erin, Alicia, Edward IV, Michael, Ryan, Kari, Adam, Brian, Colin and Lauren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Joseph; and two brothers, Richard and Jack.

Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the parish hall after the service. Interment will be private for the family.
