PRESQUE ISLE – Vaughn Winslow, 86, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Presque Isle Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Vaughn was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Mapleton, son of Alden and Ethel (Gregg) Winslow.
Vaughn was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was also a member of Presque Isle American Legion. Vaughn worked for SAD 1 as a maintenance superintendent for 42 years, taking only one day of sick time. He was a meticulous, dedicated man, and a hard worker. He would get up many winter nights just after midnight to travel to the district schools and then to Westfield and Mapleton to make sure the boilers were all working properly. He could figure out almost any problem and come up with a solution. He knew how to make things work and always approached life with a “can-do attitude.” He was a very kind and gentle man with a generous heart. Later in his life, Vaughn exemplified this gift of giving while financially supporting local children’s organizations. It meant a lot to support groups of importance to him. In his free time, he loved the outdoors and had hiked most of the Maine Appalachian Trail, and was an active member of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club. In his early retirement, he made sign markers that can still be found on the trail today.
Vaughn is survived by his wife, Glenda (Willey) Winslow; his children and their spouses, Sue and Joe Powers of Mapleton and John and Dorothy Winslow of Bel Alton, Md.; his grandchildren, Jesse, Katelyn, and Michaela Powers, Bradley Johnson, Kyle Upchurch and Jessica Winslow Blaylock; and his great-grandson, Jackson Blaylock. He also leaves behind his siblings, Pauline Rockefeller of North Haven, Conn., Phillip Winslow of Mapleton, Quentin Winslow of Somers, Conn., Wilmot Winslow and his wife, Jean, of Lowell, Mass., Richard Winslow of Upland, Calif., and Don Winslow and his wife, Elaine, of West Haven, Conn. He will also be fondly missed by a special sister-in-law, Helen Willey, who was a great comfort to him this past year.
