ROCKLAND, Maine — Three new businesses soon will open in three previously vacant buildings in town.
Applications for permits from the code enforcement office were filed last week.
One application is by Aaron’s Inc. to open a store that rents furniture, home appliances and other items. Aaron’s wants to open its store at 47 Maverick St. where Movie Gallery operated until it closed in May 2010.
Aaron’s is based in Atlanta and has more than 1,800 stores in the United States and Canada.
Another application before the code office is for a fitness center at the former Maine Department of Transportation office building at 143 Rankin St.
Korinn Scattoloni said she plans to open Korinnsdance, Art & Fitness Center on July 1.
There will be 11 faculty members, she said.
And the third application is by Emily Jenks to provide ballet instruction and etiquette instruction at 8 Lindsey St.
Jenks has operated the Rockland School of Ballet for 11 years at the Lincoln Street Center but the Lincoln Street Center will be closing June 30.
Jenks said she plans to open July 2 at the new location.

Sooo.. they’re going to have 3 rent to own places? Rent-a-center, Colortyme, and Aarons? Thats just a sign to show the economy is really crappy. Now people in Rockland can have flat screen TV’s and living room sets, but they’ll end up paying way over price in the long run. My advice, just save up for a few months and buy it straight out. Better than paying an arm and a leg.
Wow. Big deal. A rip off center that preys on low income folks, making them even poorer and two operations that won’t employ more than a handful of poorly paid artists… Obama Recovery!
Nice try BDN. Keep up the good news reviews for ya’ boy. It’s all rainbows and Unicorns in libbyland.

Though I do agree with you on the rental center.
Why don’t you quote the average Rockland, Maine salary data for those people. National averages mean squat in Maine. And how about the potential employment opportunities for others to earn a decent wage to work in the employ of those ventures? Nil.
I am not dumping on the dance teacher and fitness instructor. Good for them. But don’t pee on my head and tell me it’s raining. This is non-news and hardly warrants a headline indicating booming enterprise in Rockland. It’s just more fingers in the dike.
every business that holds employees, and makes money is a good thing (well, except for the rental place, those places cause more harm than good) – small and large. Little drops in the bucket will eventually make it over flow. Nowhere in the article does it claim “booming business” – you’re over reacting in many ways. Just because you don’t find it interesting enough, doesn’t mean others won’t.
Why is everyone so down on the rental companies? Americans have been trained to covet the gadgets and electronics of their neighbors, thus the rental company fills this void for the materially obsessed Americans.
Two negative comments already. Nattering nabobs of negativity. Some people want to be unhappy no matter what the news.
Keep whistling past the graveyard billy ba-roo.
Who says I am unhappy. My state assistance just got approved. I am heading to Aarons! Wooo-hoooo….
Barack Obama 2012! Even more Hope and Change!
If 3 stores were closing it would be LePage’s fault, but because there is someone willing to invest in opening stores in Maine, the anti-Republicans will find a way to spin this as negative.
Watch out Camden. No more Camden by the Sea…..Rockland by the smell! Rockland is a happening place these days.
Camden is just a traffic bottleneck between Rockland and Belfast.
The disseminating odor from the town dump still permeates a quarter of the town, so it still is “Rockland by the smell”; the town should be ashamed of the dump and the stench that radiates through the area. It is simply disgusting. Kudos though to the new businesses although they aren’t the type I would do be doing business with.
That’s not the dump. It’s the ocean! lol…that’s what we tell the flatlanders anyway…
Somebody has faith in the future of Rockland. That in itself is good news. There are a few kinks being worked out in our city, but they will and bet there will be some good competition for the council seat this November.
