MILLINOCKET – Joan Thorpe, 82, passed away June 5, 2012, at a local hospital. She was born March 4, 1930, in Millinocket, daughter of Nazie and Ruth Bouchard.
Joan graduated from Stearns High School, class of 1947, fifth in her class. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Millinocket; Hillcrest Golf Club; and Stearns Music Boosters. She was a past president of Millinocket Emblem Club. Joan loved sports, including Stearns High School basketball and New England Patriots. She traveled extensively with her sister and best friend, Maryruth Reed. She especially enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, Atlantic City and Foxwoods to play the slots. She enjoyed church and lunch with her family every Sunday. She loved spending time at camp, boating, and family barbecues. Joan was an avid reader and enjoyed watching movies, especially documentaries.
Her husband of 35 years, Stanley “Ted” Thorpe, predeceased her in 1982. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy DeWitt and husband, David, of Millinocket, and Sandra Fayle and husband, Jeff, of Medway; sister, Maryruth Reed of Millinocket; brother-in-law, Red Kittrick of Millinocket; grandchildren, Sean DeWitt, Rachel Binder-Hathaway and Douglas Binder; great-grandchildren, Jacob Hathaway, Sheldon Crawford, Daniel Binder and Samaya DeWitt; special nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her younger sister, Carole Kittrick.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, June 11, at First Congregational Church, Millinocket, with Pastor Terry Given officiating. Interment will be at the local cemetery, with a luncheon after at the church. Contributions in Joan’s memory may be made to First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 507, Millinocket, ME 04462.
