CARMEL – James Arthur Umble Jr., 78, died June 7, 2012, at a Bangor health care center. He was born Dec. 16, 1933, in Norfolk, Va., son of James A. Umble Sr. and Lessie (Bateman) Gans.
James joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and served on the USS Bennington. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was active in American Legion Post No. 107, Carmel and Etna, and a member of the Korean War Veterans Association. He worked as a long haul truck driver for numerous trucking companies, including Quinn Freightliner, Brewer, and Pottles Transportation, Hermon. In more recent years he enjoyed being a parts runner for CB Kenworth.
Surviving are his “Cinderella and Honey,” Joan E. Bush, her daughter, Shelly Bailey, and her children, Andrew and Allison, all of Carmel; her son, Harold Stevens and his children, Angela and Tabitha; the mother of his children, Joan Umble; three sons, James A. Umble III and his children, James, Shawn and Michelle, Timothy L. Umble and his daughter, April, and Terri Umble and his wife, Sandi; two daughters, Vicki Lowe and her friend, Bill Leeman, and her son, Jim Lowe, and Jodie and her husband, Mike Gehan, and their children, Alexis and Braydon; many great-grandchildren and many special cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, with the Rev. Clayton Blackstone, pastor of Advent Christian Church, officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
