ETNA, Maine — A local woman says her family is saddened and upset after a U.S. Postal Service driver ran over their pet goat Wednesday. The goat had to be put down.

Barbara Rice, who lives on the West Etna Road, said she, her husband, Craig, and three sons have been heartbroken by the incident.

“We had a package delivered and my 12-year-old [Cody] went out to get the package,” Barbara Rice recalled, adding that the family had three goats that liked to greet visitors. “He was yelling out at the mailman [about the goats around his truck]. He backed up and ran over it.

“If he would’ve taken two seconds to make sure Cody had the third [goat out of the way], it wouldn’t have happened,” she said.

Three-month-old Boomerang, or Boomer for short, was run over on the left side of its body, breaking bones and his hip. Rice said she rushed the goat to a veterinary clinic. She said surgery was an option but the $1,500 price tag wouldn’t guarantee the kid would make it. So the decision was made to put Boomer down. Barbara Rice’s husband buried the goat.

“My husband even cried, and he’s a pretty strong dude,” said Barbara Rice.

She said each of her sons had a goat to call his own. Boomer was Cody’s goat.

“He went to a friend’s house [after the incident],” said Rice. “He really wants to stay there to keep his mind busy. I just talked to him. He was still sad, but he’s playing basketball.”

Although the veterinary bill was $300 for X-rays, Rice said she’s just seeking an apology.

“A piece of me expected a note or a card in the mailbox [from the driver on Thursday] — just a ‘sorry.’ But we got nothing,” she said. “I think he should be held liable to some extent. I think it would mean more to my boys if he came to them face to face and said, ‘I’m sorry.’”

Rice said she has emailed postal authorities with her account of what happened and the veterinary bill.

An official at the post office in Carmel, where the driver works, referred questions to the northern New England district office.

Denise Varano, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service, said the accident is under investigation.

“While accidents [by USPS drivers] are isolated, we deeply regret when any harm results,” Varana said in a telephone interview.

Rice said the other two goats, Junior and Nougat, are left wondering what happened to Boomer.

“Now we have the goats yelling. They don’t understand where Boomer is,” she said.

      1. well of course that would be awful..as postal employees we do have to look around our vehicles before leaving, we are not supposed to back up unless no other choice, but IS the owners responsibility to keep animails away from postal workers…if there is no other choice but to back out of a driveway..1 of 2 things..walk to the door (making sure NO DOGS) are about or, stop package delivery, and leave a notice in the box. Personally, they would be getting a notice to p/u at Po..and yes..an apology would be nice..I am sorry for their loss..but so many times people think its ok to let the critters run wild, and say dont worry, they’ll move…not true seen it a few times

        1. Actually , once you decide to drive your vehicle onto someone’s property, you have now taken the responsibility for what happens with your vehicle. If you drive on my yard with your postal truck and damage my yard are you not responsible for the damage? How is this any different? That is just like saying that if you back out of a parking spot and run over a person it’s their fault. You are the driver of a 2,000 pound vehicle, on someone’s property and they are yelling at you to STOP and you continue. Sorry, but the driver is completely at fault and should atleast apologize.

          1. I had a friend come into my driveway one day a little too fast, my dog was always in the yard loose (never left my yard once) and of course my dog went running towards her car to greet her and she had the nerve to tell me I should hold onto my dog when a car comes into my driveway and I had to tell her that she needed to slow the heck down and watch out for the dog! The nerve of some people!

          2. I agree with you. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional but since when do any of us get a pass when we hit and kill a person’s pet with our car on that person’s property. It’s not as if the goat was in the road.

      2. If there are goats AND kids out at the same time and I’m driving, I’m watching out for the kids. Could be the driver was so careful watching the children that he didn’t even notice the goat.

        1. If he had been so carefully “watching the children”, he would have noticed the 12 year old boy screaming that the goat was under his car!!!! RIGHT?????????

          1. Am curious why you decided to use “only” four exclamation points with your first sentence, but then used all caps and nine question marks with the “right”?

    1. What if this was you’re child Jon, seriously !!!   It is the postal workers responsibility to make sure that his vision and vehicle are clear before backing up.  Is a prior postal worker, i was under the assumption that they were not supposed to back up when they are out making deliveries.  Correct me if I’m wrong.

    2. and so was their child.  What if the mailman, who was obviously NOT paying attention, had hit Cody?  Isn’t making sure things are clear behind you before you back up a major rule of driving?

    3. It’s not a legal issue.  It’s a moral issue.  She’s not trying to establish guilt.  She’s simply saying that it would have meant a lot to the family if he had told them to their faces that he was sorry for killing their goat.  It’s not complicated.

    1.  Which is what Cody was trying to do, had the postal worker just been patient for the few seconds it would have taken for him to grab Boomer from behind the vehicle.

      1. I understand what you’re saying, but they don’t belong in a roadway/driveway where vehicles are. But the postal worker has a job to do too!   Keep your pets safe people!  Fence them in away from cars. I am sorry this happened, and it’s heartbreaking.

        1.  I have worked for the Postal Service for 7 years and there is absolutely no backing period no exceptions.  If you can not deliver a package and turn safely without backing you do not deliver. I would not be surprised that the reason behind not receiving an apology would because the driver has been fired.  Anyone can have an animal on their own property it is their property. It is the job of the Postal driver to make the judgement call on safety whether it be animals, turning, backing etc. The Postal worker will be held accountable I guarantee it.

          1. Thanks for clarifying the USPS policy.  Anyone can have pets on their property, I get that, but again, it’s our responsibility to protect our pets.

          2. Well people seem to be missing the point that someones pet was killed on their own property. The child was trying to get the animals out of the way and so what if he wasnt. Its the drivers fault bottom line he broke protocol.

          3. I would be effin P.O’d . I appreciate these people bringing packages to my door, but just slow down a tad. My mail carrier is always in a huge rush. I can visualize this situation right now.  It’s your property, your free to let your animals roam on it.

        2. Yeah, your so right, dogs, cats, goats and other pets know the difference between the yard and the driveway. You shouldn’t have to fence in your pets in your own yard. When someone drives onto your property they should be aware of whats around their vehicle, especially when some one is yelling at you to STOP!

          1. Well, here is one goat that did not know the difference between the yard and the driveway. My dogs must be dumb, they don’t know the difference either.

      2. I didn’t see in the article that the boy approached the postal worker and asked him to wait or that he was screaming at the postal worker to stop. Did I miss something? Seems to me that it happened too quick and that the boy was out there and witnessed it but didn’t know before hand what was about to happen. If the boy had seen the goat while the postal worker was out delivering the package why not grab the goat then to avoid all this? I don’t think its that simple. I don’t think either person saw the goat til after.

        1. “We had a package delivered and my 12-year-old [Cody] went out to get the package,” Barbara Rice recalled, adding that the family had three goats that liked to greet visitors. “He was yelling out at the mailman [about the goats around his truck]. He backed up and ran over it.

    1. READ the article………..All they are asking for is an apology! They are not looking for a lawsuit!

    2. yea i have lots to say..we talk to our postmaster when things happen..not the public..sorry

  1. Did the USPS have permission to drive onto these people’s property? The postal carrier could have parked on the road and walked, or left a delivery note in the mail box that the package could be picked up at the Post Office.

Did the USPS carrrier exercise reasonable care? Probably not.

    1. I love people that think they know so much about our rules..and what if you are being nice to walk  up to the home, and their critter bites you..should we sue> hmmmmmmm  or those wonderful people who let their dogs jump on our vehicles.. maybe they should pay for a new paint job..

      1.  That’s why the USPS has little notices to leave in mailboxes for people to pick things up. The god-like attitude the USPS and its employees have is why they are going out of business (that and the lousy service). I’ve been treated poorly enough times by indifferent USPS clerks at different USPS Post Offices, I don’t go there any more. This driver obviously could care less about what he did. FedEx baby

        1. we deliver for fed ex baby..funny you have so many problems with the po..ever think it may be you

          1. Yeah, it’s great…we get real time tracking info until FedEx hands off to USPS. Then things go into the black hole known as the US Postal Service. And when the USPS can provide tracking info, I already have the item in my hand days before the tracking is updated to tell me it was delivered. USPS = dinosaur

          2. okkkkkkkkk

          3. That’s because A.) you selected the cheapest form of delivery, and B.) FedEx saves money by having the post office deliver to your house. When the postal service is no longer, you won’t have the cheap delivery option any more.

      2. It’s called hazards of the job. I am in the service industry as well and have to drive onto peoples property every day and approach their house with barking and gnarling dogs and even back out of their driveways. I can honestly tell you that I have never in 20 years run over a person or a pet. However I have been bitten several times. I accept that as a hazard of my job and I am more careful than I sometimes need to be.

      1.  I think they mean park on the side of the road and walk up the driveway, not the entire postal route

  2. “Rice said she has emailed postal authorities with her account of what happened and the veterinary bill.”  She’s obviously looking for more than an apology from the USPS.  Likely because of the postal service’s bureacracy they’ll make it look like the accident was Rice’s fault.

    1. I thik she’ll be bumming..Ive heard of dogs getting run over..people dont get re-imbursed

    1.  What would you like to see ? Go down and buy the paper, do you think the whole thing will be filled with dramatic or tragic news ? There are special interest sections , sports, church, regional…we are still a very rural state.

      1. My neighbors dog got hit by a car a couple weeks ago, maybe the BDN should write about that? Or, how about the time we had to put my dog down? Where did I say I wanted a bunch of dramatic and tragic news????? I dont see that in my comment anywheres. Yes, there are special interest sections… No section called farm animal gets hit by usps driver because owner did fence it or watch after it… Someone get ahold of BDN and tell them to make a rural section for Sam278

        1. Ah, never mind, I get it now. You are one of those people. I will just go back to reading the section of the paper marked murders on First St. , cause you know, that’s how you want to counter in this discussion. I have no where else to go in response to your indignation. I hope for a day when you can see not all news has to be what YOU think. Funny how this story is number 2 on the most read for the day…must be no one is interested. Sorry about your dog, I would have felt awful for you as well if someone just hit him and ran.

    2. Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll have another stabbing, motorcycle accident, or missing baby for you soon.

  3. They are only looking for an apology! Is that too much to ask for? If a 12 year old child were next to your vehicle screaming……..wouldn’t you STOP? Also, if you ran over an animal (which could’ve been their 4 year old son) wouldn’t you stop, get out and offer a hand?
Come on people! Common courtesy………..thats ALL!

    1. I am guessing the postal worker was told not to say anything as the incident is investigated.

    2. if he apologizes, it is as if he is admitting guilt… and the lawyers have already been called in.. there is no such thing as common courtesy anymore… :(

    3. I didn’t see in the article where there was a boy screaming at the postal worker. Did I miss something?

      1. “We had a package delivered and my 12-year-old [Cody] went out to get the package,” Barbara Rice recalled, adding that the family had three goats that liked to greet visitors. “He was yelling out at the mailman [about the goats around his truck]. He backed up and ran over it.”

  4. The important question is:  Was the mail truck parked in the street or in the family’s driveway?  If it was in their driveway, then yes, the post office should cover the cost of the x-ray and the goat.  If the truck was parked on the street, then may I suggest a fence?

    1.  The postal worker had pulled in to the driveway to deliver a package, the oldest child asked him to wait while he got the animals out of the way, but he backed up anyway & ran over one of the baby goats.

  5. It would have taken the mailman a min or two just to wait for the goat to be out the way. Why does everyone have to be in such a rush now. What if that had been a child that he had hit??? All it takes is a split second of carelessness…..such a shame when not even your pets are safe in your own yard.

    1. You say why is the mailman in a rush thats because they get paid by the day to deliver to the boxs along the road no matter how lone it takes them you would do the same think

    2. it is a shame..but thats the way it is and has been ..you have a package we pull into your yard..blow the horn for an adult (not child) that is a service for you. we have so many that let dogs run free, we are not getting out of our vehicles in case there is one hiding/running loose..I am sure this postal guy feels bad..It was an accident..part of my job is seeing all kinds of critters, and I am so glad they are confined..so they dont get hurt..

  6. One would like to think that their animals and children are safe in their own yard. This postal worker should have exercised extreme caution driving into a yard with children and small animals present. Shame on him. What if it had been a child…? Had he done the right thing and offered a sincere apology, this probably wouldn’t be an issue. I don’t blame this family one bit; I would feel the same way. This person needs to be held accountable.

  7.  I believe it’s a private yard NOT the public road.  It could very well
been another child.  And yes, the vehicle operator is ALWAYS responsible
for the safe operation of his own vehicle.  No matter where it is. Who
would anyone care to suggest  suggest IS responsible for the operation
of the USPS vehicle if not the driver/postal employee?  The 12 year old
    boy?

    1. The owner wasn’t quick enough to save the animal, which is now dead.  THAT’s why it should be fenced in. Duh.

  8. I guess there are more ways than one for the USPS to get your goat. Personally, I’m still wondering what happened to a check I mailed 2 weeks ago that never arrived.

  9. It does not say that she hollared there were 3 goats? She said goats, he may assumed there were 2. The whole story may not be told, yet.

  10. I do not let my pets run free even in my own yard. Even if I technically have the right to, it won’t make them any less dead when a foreseeable accident happens.

And, if the mailman or UPS or FedEx guys knock at my door when the dog is inside, I grab my dog by the collar to make sure he doesn’t bolt after the truck because I’m smart enough to know that accidents happen. Even to well-meaning people. Same thing I’d do if I had small children that couldn’t be counted on to look out for themselves.  I wouldn’t let him wander out by a truck and make the delivery man fully responsible for avoiding an accident. That’s just irresponsible.

I really hate to see this woman act like it’s not her fault that she let a goat loose while a delivery man was in the yard. She is lucky it wan’t one of her children.

    1. I’m sure Barbara feels some responsibility. At the same time, I don’t think a person has to confine their pets at all times because someone might come into the driveway and not exercise sufficient caution when leaving. All of us need to slow down just a bit and make safety a bigger priority.

  11. Another thing, the 12 year old was yelling at the driver to stop and he did not. He was obviously not being as attentive as he should have been in that situation…

  12. If we back up and hit some thing, it’s “OUR” fault. PERIOD. When around kids…animals..a little extra caution is only common sense. After reading some of the comments….What are you people thinking?

    1.  I know this family and they did not contact BDN.People wrote to BDN to tell them about what happened and they called her. Have you ever been around goats??? They are funny, cute and very affectionate. He was part of the family.

  13. Gosh, seems to me that the owners ought to be apologizing for creating an unsafe environment for the delivery man. Yes, he was driving but they are the ones who had allowed the animal to be loose and unsupervised. They are being totally unreasonable. Where’s personal responsibility? Why is it always someone else’s fault?

    1. Unsafe environment? What’s unsafe about a loose goat? Sounds like the only thing unsafe was the postal driver who clearly broke the postal rules by driving into a driveway that he had to back out of. Personal responsibility resides with the driver, not the homeowners who were telling him to stop.

      1. Ever been nipped by a goat, or kicked by one, or peed on by a goat or smell your clothing after petting a goat- that smell is going to last, and you have become the unsafe environment – no one is going to want to be next to you for days, even with a shower.

    2. Somone else would be the owners. The person responsible would be the driver of the vehicle.

    3. Excellent point about personal responsibility. The operator of a motor vehicle is the one who is responsible for the SAFE operation of the vehicle. Not a child, not a goat, not a blade of grass. Backing over an animal, child or even a blade of grass is not safe operation no matter how you want to spin it. The postal service has established rules which do not allow the operator of a vehicle in postal service to back up. The operator violated that rule. So in your opinion it is okay if someone breaks a rule that their employer has and when the person that violates that rule ends up damaging personal property you blame the victim. Nice.

  14. I find it hard to believe that a postal worker would delibertly run over a kid’s goat right in front of him. Something doesn’t sound right. Did he leave without knowing or saying anything? I don’t see his reaction in the article…

        1. But it you have goats that you know “like to greet visitors” it never dawns on you that the goats could put themselves at danger “greeting visitors” that drive cars and trucks into the driveway?   A three month old goat is small and easy to miss if you are backing up.  Goats might have the ability to mourn one another, but do they have an appreciation of danger so that they know to stay clear or trucks and cars? It’s risky to let them roam loose, even if you legally have the right to do so. You also have the right to smoke cigarettes and eat until you weigh 800 pounds, but does that make it smart to do so?

          1. Just going by what the story says. The story says the boy was yelling about goats around the truck. The story does not quote the boy saying “there is a goat under the car.” As another poster has pointed out  the word “goats” covers any number from two on. So, the mailman could have seen two goats that were clear of his path and backed up not realizing there was a tiny third one.

          2. Do you understand that when you reply to a comment your reply is printed directly under the comment you are replying to? So you do not need to quote the entire comment. Everyone knows what you are replying to.

  15. The BDN must be really hard up for stories. Sorry for the kids goat. When I was in the 2nd grade my black lab got run over by the school bus I was in. The class made me cards and the bus driver came to my house and sincerely apologized. The mailman should feel bad for kids..

  16. I personally know this family. They are very loving and devoted parents to their kids and they are also big animal lovers. They are always posting pics of the kids at baseball games or just silly things that kids do. They also post pics of their animals, because they are part of the family. Pics of the kids sleeping side by side with their dogs or cuddling up their baby goats in blankets while watching tv or playing games. Their animals are their babies and what happened yesterday was avoidable. Cody screamed at the mailman to stop because Boomer was under the vehicle. That is something that Cody will never forget. Please have compassion for this animal loving family and stop making stupid jokes about what happened. R.I.P. boomer

  17. sorry for your loss . you know a animal is just like part of the family to some people

  18. Wouldnt it be nice if the person who ran the goat over actually said to the little boys the following words: “I am so very sorry that this happened.”

Why does blame even have to be an issue? The owner is not looking for money, she says so herself. She simply thinks that the person who ran over the goat should face her child and tell her child that they are sorry that this happened.

Wouldnt that be the right thing to do? That person doesnt even have to say “Im sorry I ran over your goat”. They dont have to admit anything other than…. Im sorry this happened.

  19. Another reason to eliminate some extra services now provided — no good deed goes unpunished.    Next time, leave a notice and have the property owner come to the Post Office.

  20. This whole thing has goaten way out of hand.   I mean it’s really ba-a-a-a-a-d.  Shear madness I say.

  21. As unfortunate as this accident is, fortunately he didn’t back up and run over the boy! The postal worker should be made to face the boys face to face and apologize.

    1.  How bout the mother apologizing to the boy. She could explain that this was her fault. You can not have animals running where they are apt to be hit by a car.

    1. What is considered a public road? Can you post a link to the law to educate the rest of us?

  22. Irregardless if the mailman was at “fault” or not, an apology is the right thing to do. When a salesman ran over a family dog at a business I worked at, they sued the crap out of him, an apology is geting off cheap, not that money should be the driving force.

  23. What a sad thing to have happen. Pets are so special to families and I’m sorry for the loss this family is suffering.
However…This happened Wednesday? On Thursday afternoon the customer and BDN have already started a media attack on the mail person?  I think even Emily Post  would allow a little more time than that before starting a public flogging of someone. I don’t believe even mail people are allowed to put a note or a card in the mailbox without going through the proper channels of actually mailing it. Pain, sorrow and anger can alter a person’s judgement when they are close to a situation. BDN…what’s your excuse? Shouldn’t you be a little more objective? Or is creating a mob mentality what you’re really all about? The more I read the more I wonder. Maybe what I should say is that the more I read the less I wonder.

  24. It is against the law to back out of a driveway in Maine.  Unless there is a turnaround, EVERYONE should follow the protocol of backing IN to ALL driveways so when you leave, you are facing ahead. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to avoid backing at some point if there is no turnaround. When you first arrive at a drive, you can see who and what is in it. That’s why it’s safer to back in. Anything can (and usually does) happen while you’re there (like kids parking themselves under your car-talk about blind spots!). When you leave, it’s much safer to see ahead of you, with only your hood entering the road before the rest of the vehicle. I wish EVERYONE, not only Postal Workers, would think about this and do it.

    1. Against the law to back out of a driveway in Maine? Since when? Can you please post a link to that law because I’m one of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of people who back out of a driveway in Maine every day and I’ve never heard of such a law.

  25. I’m surprised he even delivered the mail with the goats out..My mailman wouldn’t deliver my mail one day because my BLACK LAB was sitting on the grass wagging his tail waiting to greet him.

    1. Policy is that if an unattended dog is in the yard, don’t deliver.  The dog’s job, from its point of view, is to protect the owners. There’s no knowing how any dog will react to a stranger, however friendly you believe it is. Yes, I know BLACK LABS are probably the friendliest breed there is, but facts are facts.

  26. The Postal Worker needs to be fired. What if it were a child? In a hurry to deliver Snail Mail? Obviously this Postal Worker skipped the US Postal Service Safety Course on backing accidents too.

  27. someone should tell ms rice about the invention of fencing.  it really helps keep animals away from areas you don’t want them getting into.  oh and she’s not worried about the money but she sent the USPS a copy of the bill?  rrrrrright.

blaming the driver for this is stupid.  even if it were a child it’s the parents responsibility to make sure the child is not in a dangerous situation behind the vehicle on a driveway or roadway.  unless the driver drove through their yard and ran over a goat, then it’s not his fault.

      1. The article states: “Rice said she has emailed postal authorities with her account of what happened and the veterinary bill.”

  28. on another note the post office in bangor lost my son package ( the price of the article in it was $54.98 ). we have a post office box , thay accepted the package and put the key to the package   in the wrong box . who ever picked it up did not return it . the post office is telling us there is nothing we can do about it .  has anyone had this done to them. we have opt out of any key put in our box. we will pick up our packages from the window now.

  29. this is not the first time they have had animal problems they have dogs that are never on leashes and run around causing problems for the owners and others  so it would have not happened if they had a fenced area and or a leashed animals feel so sorry for the goat and the kidos that had to deal with it but thats why accidents happen

  30. FYI TO THE IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO THINK WE ARE OUT TO SUE OR GET SOMETHING FROM THIS!!!!!!!!!!  OUR MAILMAN AND HIS SUPERVISOR CAME TO OUR HOME TODAY AND APOLOGIZED TO MY BOYS!!!!!!!!!  THAT WAS ALL WE WANTED!!!  A COPY OF THE VET BILL WAS REQUESTED AND WE DENIED THIS………IT WASN’T ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!  FOR THOSE THAT WERE IGNORANT ENOUGH TO WRITE RUDE REMARKS…IM SORRY YOU DON’T HAVE FEELINGS OR A HEART!!!

    1. This is what happens to just about every story in the BDN. Comments come from all sorts of people.

  31. the mailman should have to pay all bills related to the goat and then be fired thats pretty mean not saying sorry when it happenedfor killing a animal especially in front of a kid thats just ignorence  its not a bike or a object its life gott a be a lil more careful with that

  32. My dogs are usually loose on my property.  When someone drives up my road they meet, circle and escort the vehicle. If the driver doesn’t slow down to a crawl and injures one of them, there will be a major problem for the driver.  I have a sign stating “Slow, dogs have right of way” and I mean it.

    1. So, you’ll sue the pants off the driver? And then what, cuddle by the fireplace with the big check they pay you? Not me, mine are fenced.  What good is being right if being right won’t bring the dog back from the dead?

  33. I’m very sorry for the family’s traumatic loss.  We have 3 bottle-raised pet Nigerian Dwarf goats ourselves and they are very sweet and personable creatures; much like dogs but with weird eyes.  I think it is not at all unreasonable to expect others to exercise care and caution in driving on private property, regardless of the reason for being there; I’d hope out after a horrible thing like this happened, the individual responsible would at least apologize.  However, I’m sure liability is an issue and anyone working for a corporation or government agency would be constrained by the rules set forth by their employer.

  34. nothing learned by this obvisouly there 3 dogs where just runnin around free on property thats not theres   what it gonna take for them  to keep there animals safe and where they belong obey the leash law and driveways are for cars and trucks not animals this is why accidents happen please lets make it better not worse i respected your wishies its time you all do the same please
